Have you considered posting these to the Spare Character Concepts thread?

Or maybe the Extraordinary NPCs thread?

Don't see the second one, but I do see the first. I might do that.

I've been watching the entire Buffy the Vampire Slayer series on Netflix lately, so in that spirit, here is a post-movie, pre-Sunnydale Buffy:

Name: Buffy Summers

Template: Emissary of Power (pg. 75)

Musts: Marked by Power (minimum refresh -1)

High Concept: The Slayer

Trouble: I’m Just a Kid

Phase One: I Didn’t Ask for This Destiny – Buffy was the stereotypical cheerleader at Hemery High School in Los Angeles. She is a carefree popular girl whose main concerns are shopping and spending time with her friends. While at school one day, she is approached by a man named Merrick Jamison-Smythe. He informs her that she is The Slayer, or chosen one, and he is a Watcher whose duty it is to guide and train her. She initially refuses to believe his claims, but becomes convinced when he is able to describe a recurring dream of hers in great detail (tied to Cassandra’s Tears).

Phase Two: With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility - Over the course of her training she becomes friends with Oliver Pike, whose best friend has recently become a vampire. Oliver becomes the male equivalent of the traditional "damsel in distress", being rescued by Buffy or Merrick on several occasions. However, their relationship gradually becomes romantic and Oliver becomes her partner in fighting the undead.

Phase Three: The Right Stuff - After several successful outings, Buffy is drawn into conflict with a local vampire king named Lothos, who has killed a number of past Slayers. Lothos eventually kills Merrick as well, giving her the motivation she needs to face him in battle. They eventually clash during the middle of the senior dance at Buffy's high school. Through the use of her own unconventional methods, she is able to defeat Lothos and his minions.

Phase four and five left incomplete to reflect this being a pre-Sunnydale Buffy, though once she moves to Sunnydale the possible additional aspects could be I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends, and Star-crossed Lovers as she gets to know the “Scooby Gang” and falls for Angel. Possibly also Problem Child as her duties and habits tend to get her in trouble with the authorities, her friends, and her mother. Another option is I Live on the Hellmouth, since, well, she does.

Power Level: Submerged

Skills: Cap = Superb : Points 35/35

+5 Fists, Weapons
+4 Athletics, Endurance
+3 Alertness, Might
+2 Intimidation, Conviction
+1 Scholarship, Lore, Investigation, Empathy, Rapport, Deceit, Presence

Powers and Stunts:

-1 Redirected Force (pg. 152)
-1 Step Into the Blow (pg. 152)
-1 Marked by Power (pg. 169)
-0 Cassandra’s Tears (pg. 172)
-4 Supernatural Strength (pg. 183)
-2 Inhuman Recovery (pg. 185)
-2 Inhuman Toughness (pg. 185)
+2 The Catch - Mind affecting attacks lower her defenses (pg. 185)

As I'm ramping up for my own game, I figure I'll share various people and beasties I come up with for the curious and/or those looking for ideas or drop-ins for their games. Not sure how often I'll update this, but hey, when I'm feeling plucky, something new might pop up.

So here's the first entry, a supporting cast member for my game. Meet Kwan.

Name: Kwan

Template: Focused Practitioner (pg. 76)

Musts: Channeling and/or Ritual (minimum refresh -2)

High Concept: Shaolin Kung Fu Mystic

Trouble: Strive for Enlightenment

Phase One: Last of His Line - Kwan was a foundling raised at the Shaolin temple at Song Shan. Who his parents and lineage are is unknown to him, and he was raised by the monks of the temple. He was raised in the Chan Buddhist religion, and it defines his life.

Phase Two: My Kung Fu is Strong - As a monk of the Song Shan temple, he learned Xingyiquan martial arts and Buddhist philosophy. When his ability to manipulate mystic power (or Qi made manifest as the monks see it) arose, he was trained in the deeper secret arts of kung fu mysticism. He was trained to master the Heng form of Xingyiquan to synchronize his Qi with the Qi of the earth itself.

Phase Three: Stranger in a Strange Land - When Brother Wang (see Blood Rites), who has connections with the Song Shan temple, delivered some of the temple dogs to Kwan's monastery, demonic trouble was close on his heels. Kwan stood with his brothers and defeated the demons, but Brother Wang was wounded, and all but one of the dogs was killed in the defense. Ritual communion with the surviving dog led his temple to discover that one dog remained with the Wizard Harry Dresden. Kwan was sent to the United States to seek to understanding of its intentions.

Phase four and five left incomplete for purposes of our game.

Power Level: Chest Deep

Skills: Cap = Superb : Points 30/30

+5 Fists, Weapons
+4 Athletics, Endurance
+3 Discipline, Conviction
+2 Alertness, Might
+1 Scholarship, Lore

Powers and Stunts:

-2 Channeling (Earth) (pg. 181)
-1 Killer Blow (pg. 152)
-1 Martial Artist (pg. 152)
-1 Lethal Weapons (pg. 152)
-1 Redirected Force (pg. 152)
-1 Step Into the Blow (pg. 152)

Base Refresh 8 - Refresh Adjustment 7 = Adjusted Refresh 1

Focus Items:

Bō (+1 offense control, earth)
Tattoos (+1 defense control, earth)

Stress:

Physical OOOO : Mental OOOO : Social OO

Nice song.

You know, the thread title would make a good aspect.

Anyway, this RCV vampire thing should probably go to a new thread. But since I like getting the last word, I'll say that I honestly don't mind the idea that RCVs are unplayable. But dropping a statement that implies that strongly without actually saying it and then never explaining the subject fully is a mistake that causes trouble of the sort that you see here.

That's pretty much how I read it before I even stuck my head in here.

Here's what I got now
Joesph Moman
+5  Guns, Might
+4 Fists, Weapons
+3 Stealth Burglary
+2 Deception Alertness
+1 Athletics Presence

High Concept
Sergeant in the Queen's Army
Trouble
It was this or Prison
Aspects
Luck of the Irish
Street Smarts
Clear the Way (it was the motton of the Irish Regiment)
Aspect Guest Star 1
Aspect Guest Star 2

Hmm, I'd swap out presence for intimidation (Dum Dum always seemed to me to be more about "Do it or else" to me.)

And I'd flip-flop fists and might. Maybe drop weapons for endurance since Dugan was "known for his marksmanship with rifles and for his impressive physique."

Finally got my book back.  Here is the part:

Lydia is in the van, taken to the building by the tennis twin vampires.  But it was Harry's fault.  Like was said above, flaming shen poop was the one he wasn't responsible for.  Sounds like your friend confused the two.

Yeah he did. However, since there was the slightest window of ambiguity in the GP fire, for the sake of his character we're claiming it wasn't actually Harry's fault at all. Harry only thinks his spell caused the fire. Turns out his fanboy (the character) tried to help and botched it (then beat feet to keep from getting in trouble with Harry).

That's B.R.'s intro.

The garage in PG wasn't on fire I believe. Just has a van and some online selling.  ;D

Yeah they player of the character pretty much has it in mind that the GP fire that Harry thought was his fault really wasn't. It was a clumsy attempt by the rookie wizard to help Harry.

The BR fire happened via flaming poo.

For some reason I read that as "Spiritual Ham".

Perhaps I'm needing a bacon fix... ::)

Ignore me, carry on.

hmm ... interesting ...

... have you thought about handling it just as flavor without changing or revamping the rules? After a successful counter-spell it seems reasonable to me to just describe the next offensive spell of the wizard/caster that did the countering as if using the energy of the defended spell. That way you still have to spend mental stress for the attack, witch in my opinion still should be required.

I'd probably handle it this way and allow the counter-spelling character to reflect the original spell within his or her power limitations (using standard casting rules as if casting a normal spell), even if the type of the original magic isn't covered by their elements. Of cause specializations and foci do apply. Seems balanced to me.

Well I was only pondering waiving the 1 stress default cost. I'd still enforce stress for shifts beyond the characters conviction.

I'd think it would be more covered by a stunt that is like Riposte except for spell casting. Harry definitely has one.

Now that would be an interesting idea for redirecting evocations. I'd still probably go for my first thoughts on retasking a thaumaturgy spell (though the Sight idea is purely speculative and more of a flavor thing if I thought it seemed appropriate to the situation).

Well I wasn't pondering waving the stress costs of the spell outside of the default 1 stress. Any shifts beyond the characters conviction would still cause stress.

DFRPG / Clever redirects
« on: June 21, 2011, 05:34:45 AM »
Reading the evocation rules, it occurs to me to ponder if a wizard could conceivably "hijack" a spell using something like the counter-spell and redirect rules to force the energy of the target spell into another spell.

I'd probably run it as a counter-spell check first, followed by a redirect, perhaps waving the typical automatic 1 stress cost (since they didn't have to gather the initial power themselves), but making the character take stress on any power (shifts) that exceed his/her conviction as per normal evoking.

Perhaps even requiring Sight use if they wanted to usurp thaumaturgic spells since this is something a bit more involved than just shorting out the spell.

Thoughts?

DFRPG / Re: How to reach Dresden level health status
« on: June 19, 2011, 01:35:58 AM »
our group was facing the Dullahand, sort of the Fae version of the Grim Reaper, the inspiration for the Headless Horseman stories

As the group caster, I decided to cast a spell to set up the Fae in the center of an intense magnetic field as a definition for a weapon 8 Earth attack.

I ended up having to take a few consequences and spending some fate points to make to go off right, but the result was several cars, rebar, a hummer full of WWII era grenades and other assorted area debris slamming into him...

only to discover that he wasn't that easily killed

so, immediately afterward they decide we want to seal him away at least temporarily so we can book, so now I'm helping craft an iron ring and rushing through a binding ritual as the guy is coming back together, with help from the rest of the party (they volunteered to take some consequences for the ritual...adding their blood to the binding)

then I had to use earth magic to bury it deep enough that someone simply walking through the area wasn't going to break the circle.

finally, we learn that one of our number had been infected with balefire in the fight and thus the binding was going to last about half the time we thought it would since while binding him, it was also supercharging his healing

meanwhile, we had to cleanse the party member of balefire before it killed him

at the end of that, I had 8 consequences (I have a lot of mental resilience) and lots of dots filled up and the GM gave us all fate points for how many consequences we had, so I ended with 11 fate points, healing from the NPCs in the area get rid of some of the mild consequences...

and then we decided to contact the Archive about our Denarian related apocalypse situation and someone got the bright idea to open a portal directly to her, for which we needed a heavy load of power....

but first they want me to look at something in a museum with my sight and I find that a Winter veil has covered a Denarian curse around a display case that's supposed to hold the Papal ring coming soon, that cost some fate points to escape more consequences

queue the Dullahand I had sealed earlier and who was getting ready to escape...so we return to where he was bound and wait for just the moment that he escapes before he's free, but after his power is accessible....and drain him dry of power (at least temporarily) to open rifts in space through which the Archive and Kinkaid come

also at this time, I had to have the Sight up to time the spell correctly, so when the extra unintended rifts open up I get a nice eyeview right into some Nevernever underworld....on top of what was going on staring at the Dullahand

more rifts than we wanted open up and a horde of little gremlin thingies come swarming out and we cover for the archive as she cleans up our(my) sloppy spellcasting (at this point I'm operating with "gaping wounds" and "bleeding eyes and ears" physical consequences as well as a small handful of not yet recovered mental milds) I do a couple of simple spells including a "cloud of iron dust" to test to see if the enemy were fae (they weren't...I should probably apologize to the team half-orc at this point) and then the gremlin things smell the blood from my wounds and tons of them come swarming toward me...

At this point, I take a concession to electrocute everything within 10ft of me.

And I'm taken out...

I wake up later when my injuries are mostly gone somehow...something about the supernatural recovering Pharoah Reborn and a blood transfusion....which is how my character's idiot brother became said PCs vassal, so hoping the Pharoah character doesn't think about that....

And then I learn that my character's yakuza assassin family has decided to send a group inbound to "rescue" me from the Wardens....

who are vaguely suspicious (probably convinced) that I'm a warlock and only the greater issue of Denarians, Loki and Maeve plotting some sort of Doomsday thing is keeping them from running a full trial on me....

Err...how did your GM make that determination if you didn't get taken out or take a concession (cashing out page 206)?
