DF Spoilers / Re: Harry still hosts Lasciel's Shadow
« on: April 28, 2022, 07:30:32 PM »
Consider that Lasciel's coin was taken up by another after Harry. Would that extinguish the shadow residing in his head? If the fallen are bound to the coin, would the acceptance by another be enough? Sort of an "Oh well...not gonna waste anymore time on Harry when I've got another host willingly embracing me."

Certainly, JB, can write it however he wants, but that would seem to be kinda soap opera-ish to me.

As far as Sanya being in Chicago, Marcone has a coin and was in play throughout whether he used Nam's powers or not. Though he was revealed at the end of the story, maybe the holiness of the swords was necessary to contribute to the stopping of Ethniu. There is the mention of something divine being something that had power against her armor, I think.

I like the theory and that's one of the main reasons I'm here---to listen and reflect on ideas of this community. Just not sure about this one.

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry's possible Denarian form?

I'm betting on Mirror-Mirror Harry to be a Denarian; so I think we will get to see this!

I was thinking the same thing while reading this thread.

I'd also be curious about Kemmler. If we allow for all children beginning as clean slates and that their experiences shape them (Nurture), then what shaped Kemmler? Or was it just in his DNA (Nature)? Likewise, other characters in the series. The series shows Kemmler and his heirs as evil because of necromancy and the "darkside" if you will. Jim's a Star Wars fan, so what caused Kemmler to follow the darkside of the Dresdenverse force?

The Sidhe speak about balancing the scales throughout. Star Wars speaks of bringing balance to the force. Palpatine didn't die (clones)...Kemmler...Palpatine...Dresden...Hmmm.

Anyway---Rabbit hole.

Maybe the thread should be Character Arcs other than Harry's rather than Prequels.

DF Spoilers / Re: How did you find The Dresden Files?
« on: March 11, 2022, 11:06:32 PM »
I'm in the minority I guess. I was introduced when I worked at Borders Books during my hard core fantasy reading phase in college, and a coworker noticed and recommended the series. I believe the most recent release at the time was Proven Guilty. Like many others, the first 2 books were good, but it didn't hook me until book 3. I am now a die-hard fan. Currently doing the re-read by audiobook while I work...until the next book release.

I used to love going to Borders. Sooo good!

I've read a lot of people say Book 3 and they were hooked as well.

So similar. I was into Buffy, Angel, Charmed, Supernatural around 2008 I was laid u with a broken ankle and binge watched them. Came across the tv show. Didn't think much about till 2010 and got hit with the twihard phase. Then I read Sookie Stackhouse. Then finally got into the books. Now its my favourite series. The books, the characters, the lore of the world within it and of course the fandom community as well. It's rare outside of Trekkies, Star Wars, Lotr, Harry Potter to find a passionate fandom that can argue about minute details for 9 pages (subtle look at my Star Born thread).

Thanks Guys
Con

I suspect many of us have binged those shows as well. I know Supernatural is a definite favorite.

Same with me, started with the television series, wasn't even aware that it was based on a book series.  Only disappointment is the character Bob, I loved the actor playing him and thus the character as well.  So the Bob of the novels was a bit of a let down...

Yes. The actor, Terrence Mann, is so good. Have you seen Foundation with him as Brother Dusk?

DF Spoilers / How did you find The Dresden Files?
« on: March 11, 2022, 05:28:34 PM »
I first found the TV series, as I suspect did many of you. I didn't realize it was based on a novel until I was having a discussion with a waitress in a seedy bar. I've no idea how we even got to the topic other than maybe through science fiction, but she said I should definitely try the books. So, around 2010, I dived in and was transported to a new world. Dresden was a welcome respite from my real world woes and Dresden and I became fast friends. Over the years, Dresden's kinda been like family. I met Jim at the Big Trouble in Little China screening/book signing several years ago and got to say thanks. The theater was full of supporters I'm sure were there to share their own thank yous.

Dresden still provides respite at times. There's a familial comfort in rereading the stories or listening to them.

Hope you are well, Forum readers. This place is like Dresden, too. Familiar and comfortable.

Thanks---Brien

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry Listening
« on: February 15, 2022, 07:52:47 PM »
I think it must be part of his magical talent. Rashid pointedly asks him to confirm that he can before having a conversation with him in the council hall. (I forget which book) To me, this indicates an ability beyond what is simply good hearing. Couple this with his ability to find things and he's a magical detective. Whether he's using hair or some other piece of evidence to focus the connection of the lost item, or his innate ability to listen, I believe these provide the foundation for Harry's abilities as a wizard.

Would this be auralmancy?

An anthology of the Knights sounds good, but it should include at least one Historical Winter Knight, Tam Lin, as well as one historical Summer Knight,  Ronald Ruel, perhaps,  in a team up with a Knight of the Sword?

I know Tam Lin has come up before in the forum. Remind me---Has Jim referenced Tam Lin specifically, or are the references just forum-related? In my VERY short internet search, he's rescued by his love on Halloween.

I wonder if we've even met Harry's true love, yet. Certainly, he loves faithfully and truly--ie Susan and Murphy.  And if Harry is Tam Lin, or Tam Lin-like, then who rescues him from Mab (or some other faerie queen) and the WK mantle?

Thoughts?

Thanks---Brien

Question: If you could have a prequel to the Dresden Files utilizing characters from the series (either known explicitly or only alluded to), who would you most want to see and why?

I think Maggie's (Mama Dresden) Adventures in the Never Never could be fun. What started as a mapping of the Ways would lead to all kinds of adventures. (Or maybe her adventures led to the mapping of the Ways.) And maybe along the way, we find out what makes Malcolm a truly good man.

Hope all are well here in the Dresden forum. Cheers---Brien

DF Spoilers / Re: Battle Ground foreshadowing
« on: January 26, 2022, 02:24:28 AM »

I agree:  I think we may well see Mother Winter depart, and the Mantle suck Mab out from under the Winter Queen mantle... and if Molly is still Winter Lady...

Are we sure that would happen? One ascends to the next level? We've only seen what happens when one of the Winter Ladies is killed and the Mantle passes to one most suited. If Mab were killed, could Mother Winter could hold her Mantle or bestow it on someone other than Molly? Or, if Mother Winter was done, could Mab hold her Mantle until she was prepped or a Winter Queen was prepped?

Just spitballing here.

Cheers---B

At this rate, I suspect Toot must veil while flying about or be seen as some child-sized flying whatever.

Or maybe it was just an oversight. Not nearly as fun.
