DF Spoilers / Re: Black Gate Magazine, interview w/ Jim Butcher

nothing new....  :(

Why do fans even go to a Q&A if they're only going to bring questions that are already on basically every youtube vid of Jim at a convention? I'd swear a full third of the content in every. frickin'. one. of them is his canned answers to how the DF was supposed to be boring to show up his teacher for pushing formulaic writing and how he came up with Alera on an internet bet.

Probably rumour based on the "a few months after Brief Cases" estimate. I expect it would go up on his site as soon as anything was official.

Think of the ramifications of making that choice.  It would have poisoned Harry's friendship with Michael, but only after Harry discovered the truth of what he had done. Thomas had information on where Susan and Justine had been taken.  So without that knowledge to go on Susan would have been turned and Justine would have died.  Harry would have realized he had made a mistake; and I think Michael too, if they had killed Thomas and then found out he had brought Amorachius to them.

While I think the three words to Susan is a more probable direction for Jim to write the diverging timelines from, I really like the narrative implications that could come out of MM-Harry allowing Michael to kill Thomas. The realization that the nightmare was Kravos' ghost came really close to that scene, so if he hadn't found out Justine and Susan were still alive and rushed off to save them from Bianca, Harry probably would have gone to Bob asking 'how do I beat a ghost?' questions. Cue that line of questioning unlocking Evil Bob, and a left turn into learning Kemmler's techniques from him.

And further down the line, of course, think what Nicodemus could do with "You realize, Dresden, that the vampire your friend Michael killed was Maggie's first son?" in making his pitch in DM that the Knights are not so good after all.

Say the Wcv are all descendent from the same progenitor, such a ritual would remove their demon.
I have long suspected there is a link between Drakul and the BCV. So if the ritual is done on him, it could permanently deal with the BCV.

There is, but it's indirect. Per WOJ:

Quote
And also what is Drakul a scion of?
Drakul wasn’t a scion of anything! He was something entirely unhuman that got trapped in human form. Dracula was his half-human child, who naturally had enormous paternal issues, and wound up creating himself as the first Black Court Vampire in an effort to win his father’s approval.
It didn’t work out so well.

Probably because a surprise drive-by is a fairly good tactic for getting rid of someone and getting away quickly.

Stopping a hail of gunfire is pretty cool on its own, but imagine if Harry then fired back all that energy in one shot.

He's probably kind of limited in terms of making force foci not too powerful lest he accidentally violate the first law. Fomor servitors are the most likely gun-wielding enemies he'd be facing in the near future, and I'm not sure Jim has confirmed whether they're so far modified that they don't count as people any more.

Pity he didn't take the opportunity to recover that memory while he was dead-ish.

Assuming Evil Bob was actually going to kill Harry, that means that either Evil Bob had free will, or Evil Bob still saw Kemmler as his master.  This later suggests that Evil Bob knows Kemmler is still alive.

He could believe Kemmler is still alive and be mistaken. He also blamed Harry for his personality split ("whatever you have done to my thoughts") instead of orange Bob.

I doubt Bonnie's going to be helpful, and I doubt he remembers the Word verbatim on his own.  But it's possible.

The only parts I'd really bet on him retaining without Lash to help him are how to raise Sue (because he's actually done it), and the Darkhallow and whatever Achilles' heel to the Black Court he threatened Mavra with having read from the Word before turning it over (because he's contemplated needing to use those).

And I'm not even really certain about the Black Court one, since he didn't use it when it would have come in handy against that Master who showed up in It's My Birthday Too. The Doylist reason was obviously that using necromancy again would have been crossing a line that doesn't fit with the light tone of a short story, but unless it's illegal because blampires are former humans, I don't see the Watsonian reason.

He goes back, finds out that Sandra Marling was actually Mavra, and he kills her (she's been dead all this time and he didn't know it!) and claims the book for himself.  When Mab "last saw it", it was with TTH as he went back to the future. (This pretty much requires the Sandra=Mavra theory to be accurate)

Is there a lot going for that theory? I have higher hopes for Mavra's long game than a reveal that Harry went back in time and killed her so shortly after she disappeared with the book. Plus if she wanted Molly to go warlock, I don't see why she wouldn't just turn her and train her as a sorcerous vampire.

Ah, nice catch, I stand corrected.  Ill throw the caveat that the RPG has several changes and is supposed to be considered something of a parallel universe, but those are usually more changes to relative power levels and to who Knows What (since in the RPG Billy seems to know EVERYTHING)

I don't have the RPG, so I wouldn't have been thinking of that. I'd swear I recall something specific about Bob telling Harry to hide him from the Wardens. I don't see it in Serack's WOJ index though. I'll have to have a go over CD again at some point; I have a feeling it might have been based off of something in there.

I don't think it's been proposed that he was working with his mirrors, has it?  It was just the he was using them as bodies to fake his death.

I'm not sure even the latter has been corroborated. He could as easily have been coming back from the dead by stealing new bodies like Corpsetaker was trying to as using MM Harry's body double trick.

It's tough to speculate on how Kemmler might have used the MM trick of getting one of his doubles killed in his place until we find out whether that spell finds the victim to pull across universes based on a resonance between souls or bodies. In the soul case, if Kemmler and/or his multiverse counterparts were doing fairly regular body-swaps from one living host into another (as opposed to the resurrection method of kicking a native soul out of their body) any alt-Kemmler whose current body doesn't match the current round of wanted posters is basically useless as a decoy. It works better if he's wearing Joe Smith's body and a drop of blood is enough to capture another Joe Smith, though.

He doesn't seem to have asked much about DuMorne, either.  But he knew to hide Bob from the Wardens, and wait to retrieve him until he was on his own.

It occurs to me that when Bob told Harry to bury his the skull between killing Justin and being taken in for trial, he was taking an awful risk of being left buried indefinitely if the Wardens had just executed Harry. I wonder if he knew enough to predict Eb would step up, or it was just an act of desperation to go with a strong chance of being buried forever over a certainty of being destroyed if he was caught with Harry?

DF Spoilers / Re: Small Favor - Arbitrator Choice
« on: February 18, 2018, 09:55:20 PM »
Hmm, so if Marcone was the base level prize and Ivy was just a possibility, it could jive.  It still represents a metric f*ckton of wasted resources on a vague possibility, given that it took Lucifer Himself to fuel the huge Circles that were only needed for Ivy, a cost equivalent to having to deal with a Soul fire-empowered Dresden there-after.

That was how I took it, anyway. They involved Lucifer for the sure grab of Marcone, a pretty good shot at involving Harry whether through his relationships with SI or Mab, and decent odds that requesting an arbitrator would be the only play available to him.

It's also important that as far as Nic's scheming goes as of SmF, he was still under the impression Lasciel's shadow was slowly working on getting Harry to fully take up the coin. For one thing, that means he couldn't have guessed Uriel would take the other side's freebie to balance Lucifer's action by granting Harry soulfire, since he thought Harry was still drawing on hellfire. Secondly, Nic very well might have been almost as happy with putting enough pressure on Harry that he had to fully give in to Lasciel in order to survive confronting her fellows as with actually getting Ivy. I doubt he would have shared with Tessa that he'd be happy to see the plan end up netting a nascent Starborn instead of the Archive, but if Lash had stayed on mission for them, it might actually have been a reachable possibility (supported by the fact that he tried to capture Harry after everything else went pear-shaped for them).

The question of Harry's eligibility for soulfire if Lash had still been there also prompts an interesting what-if. Given that Harry's access to hellfire had been via Lash' connection back to Lasciel, what would have happened if she'd survived turning on her originator instead of immediately sacrificing herself? I gather she'd lose the connection to continue giving Harry hellfire, but since soulfire comes from the caster anyway, could she granted Harry that ability? (I always figured Uriel using that as his balancing action was equivalent in acting at all, rather than energy expended) Or would Lash have been left as 'just' a cosmic storehouse of knowledge, without any hard power-ups to offer?

DF Spoilers / Re: New Relations and Kumori
« on: February 18, 2018, 09:07:43 PM »
I could see Kumori being Maggie's twin sister.  Would throw Harry for a loop when he see's a woman who looks exactly like his mom, and also piss him off that he was never told about her from Eb, who had been protecting the one daughter he had left.
Harry's grandmother from his father's side.  Maggie and her were friends, and that's how she met Malcolm, who had no magical talent.

The Harry's aunt theory in particular is getting pretty old for Kumori, but even the paternal grandmother version would just about have to be into her fifties by DB. It's possible someone with considerable experience might do a second apprenticeship under someone as impressive as Cowl, but I think it makes more sense that she be genuinely young.

Even speaking as a proponent of the Cowl = Simon & Kumori = Elaine theory, even Elaine is arguably pushing it in terms of young enough to fit Kumori's mistaken idealism.
