DF Spoilers / Re: TT Harry in Proven Guilty
« on: February 18, 2018, 03:19:05 PM »
In support of the "Harry accompanied the fetches to the Carpenters' house" theory, I offer the following:
Or perhaps, remembering what was going to happen, and fearing the fetches would kill Molly rather than fetch her, Time-Travel Harry met them there and ordered them, as Winter Knight, to retrieve her and take her to Arctis Tor.  When Molly opened the door and invited him and his friends in, the fetches crossed the threshold.
Either that, or he ordered them to fetch her, and told them to use his face if necessary.

That they got an invitation through the threshold was Harry's speculation. There's a WOJ to the effect that he's mistaken.
Quote
The fetches in PG hammered down the /Carpenters’/ front door, and that’s a threshold like the rock of frickin’ Gibraltar.
http://wordof.jim-butcher.com/index.php/word-of-jim-woj-compilation/woj-on-magic-in-the-dresden-files-part-2/

However, this particular WOJ was from well before Cold Days got published. Putting this under the lens of hindsight, I don't think this means they were just that beastly strong. I think it means they were able to hammer through the door because they were N-fected, and it freed them entirely from the usual requirement to respect a threshold.

Perhaps Maeve was hoping if Harry chased them back to Molly he'd choose to free dearly beloved Godmother Lea, or perhaps that something he saw at Arctis Tor would help sell her story that Mab had gone crazy.

DF Spoilers / Re: Wild Theory.

It's been suggested before. My main sticking point with that one is that in all Kemmler's time holding Bob's skull, through whatever body jumps he made, he still presented himself to Bob as the same old master, just wearing a different meat suit. Given that Bob is under the pretty clear impression Justin was just Justin, the body swap theory requires an explanation for why he'd bother deceiving his servitor spirit.

Also, I'm pretty sure by the end of his career with all the sick things he did, Kemmler would have been so twisted that he'd have a very difficult time pulling off the stern but ultimately benevolent adoptive father routine he carried off for a couple years trying to indoctrinate Harry and Elaine. Even his apprentices had pretty much gone past being able to pass as not evil-creepy-nuts in a five minute conversation even when it would have been useful to them.

DF Spoilers / Re: The Watchers
« on: February 11, 2018, 02:58:43 PM »
The only threat the Watchers/Librarians would pose would be if they had Names.

That rather depends who they're intending to threaten. Mantled immortals, sure, they're pretty well out of the reach of any government. But given that the feds are well aware of Harry and have been keeping an eye on him for a while, surveillance likely would have noticed Carlos, Eb, Thomas, and most of the other domestic known associates. If they're sharp, they've probably worked backward from Thomas to figure the Raith family are something more than just very very rich, and Lara's influence campaign among non-clued federal agencies is probably scaring the hell out of them. Should they decide to test how tough a warden or a whampire really is, a car bomb or a sniper's bullet is just as dangerous coming from Special Collections as from Kincaid or Marcone.

That's sort of my point: The Denarians were somehow counting on Gard going to Harry rather than to her own Employer.  She made it clear she couldnt do anything on Marcone's behalf as nobody in his organization got any sort of standing (Side: I wonder if he cold declare a standing Proxy?), so I wonder if similar legal/technical Accords issues prevented Vadderung from being a viable alternative to Harry and the Council

Given how heavily Accords law seems to lean on the employer being responsible for the employee, Monoc as a contractor employed by Marcone probably counts as an extension of his organization in matters pertaining to him. His own hirelings probably can't file challenge on his behalf.

I doubt their plan could have been swapped on the fly to capturing Vadderung / Kringle instead of Ivy anyway. As Tessa said, the strength of the plan was attacking the child instead of the Archive. Even if Mr. Foresight walked into the trap of a meeting at all, he probably would have been just about equally effective at stalling the Denarians until the barrier wore out as Ivy was, and much less susceptible to knock-out gas.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could Maggie have taken up a Coin?
« on: February 10, 2018, 09:33:28 PM »
One crazy wag of mine has Harry descending from nic via Malcolm.  I even proposed that Malcolm is a redeemed, 2nd chanced nic.  So in my theory, Malcolm would be both denarian and knight of the cross.

I'd figure Malcolm must have been a good guy for at least a year before Harry was born, probably more. He didn't just knock her up in a one-night stand; knowing him changed her character significantly. And he lived until Harry was six or seven.

Even if Nicodemus put down the coin and somehow traveled back in time, he simply wouldn't survive that long without Anduriel's protection from aging. Cassius went from middle age to almost dead within about a year of losing his coin, and he hadn't been depending on it as long as Nic.

I rather doubt getting one's bar listed as Accorded Neutral Ground is consistent with the level of secrecy the government spooks try to maintain.

I wonder, though, were the clued Feds in the comic Dog Men a branch of the Special Collections department? They didn't seem to mind LtW and Dresden knowing that they knew about the supernatural. Are there multiple clued in government groups?

DF Spoilers / Re: Book 17 Mirror Mirror? Rumor thread

Could you point me toward it?  I didint think we had anything specific on that link, but it's likely a post- SG WOJ that arent as thoroughly cataloged.

I don't have the source handy, but someone asked him how much of Lash's interaction with Harry she was aware of, and the answer was "all of it". But I think it was a one-way feed where she saw and heard Lash' experiences but couldn't transmit back.

DF Spoilers / Re: Making things on DR
« on: January 21, 2018, 02:23:41 AM »
I'd like to see it, but creating a "walkie-talkie" to DR I could see having serious trouble.  DR being surrounded by water being one of them. It's being set up to hold things in, and hold things out being another.

Well the pair of stones he used as a communicator with Ebenzar didn't seem bothered by having the Atlantic Ocean in between them. And the spirit didn't seem bothered by projecting a message to Harry in GS despite him being off the island, so communication is probably feasible within the limits of what Demonreach considers it important to communicate to the Warden.

I'd expect some development on one or both of the remaining significant vampire courts' storylines.

It's been a while since Cowl has appeared, too. I don't expect an identity reveal yet, but he might show up and drop a few more breadcrumbs.

Fwiw, Im quite confident Marcone has Royal Heritage mixed in there somewhere...    8)

I wouldn't be surprised to find Mirror Mirror Marcone reformed and carrying a Sword, but I'm not yet convinced Harry is on the right track about royal blood being a requirement.

Even more in white night where Lara can kiss Harry up until the last moment when she loses control.

Now that you point it out, from her POV that was probably a fairly serious bit of finesse (until she thought they were about to die anyway).

DF Spoilers / Re: Spoilers: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
« on: January 01, 2018, 01:52:35 AM »
I am not saying I believe it. In fact, I don't want to believe it. It goes against the grain of Star Wars being the Skywalker saga. But, I suspect that it will be so in order to appease certain non-plot related needs.

I wasn't really comfortable with the 'nobody important' answer either, given that #7 hinted so strongly that her parentage was significant somehow. But if they reverse that again in 9, it's going to come across as just cheap writing to keep changing their minds. It's possible Ren was lying or wrong (say, not recognizing a son or daughter of Kenobi as significant, making Rey his granddaughter), and it's not like 8 wasn't already pretty full of cheap and inconsistent writing, but I'd be kind of surprised if they change tracks again on this issue.

You've actually seen TLJ, right? The parentage question was answered in the actual movie.

DF Spoilers / Re: To the cops of Chicago do the Alpha's seem like a gang?
« on: December 14, 2017, 03:27:24 PM »
I'm not sure the police would have noticed much. The Alphas were mostly targeting low-level supernatural threats. SI might possibly notice a decrease in weird stuff happening in their territory, but they're probably too overworked to look a gift horse in the mouth. I think they had a bit of a sideline in suppressing mundane street crime, but it's not like the gangsters they did run into are going to file a complaint to the cops about a pack of wolves running them off their turf.

DF Spoilers / Re: Containing Characters
« on: December 14, 2017, 03:20:13 PM »
Well, the greater circle that contained the loup garou was meant to trap something of both flesh and spirit. Most of the same basics should be applicable to something like a skinwalker, but I'm not sure how long Harry would have the stamina to hold it.
