DFRPG / Re: At Evocation speeds and methods

Yeah, Thaumaturgy isn't an Element, so there's no real way to get power bonuses to it. And I'd personally say that Complexity does for Thaumaturgy-as-Evocation exactly what it does for other Thaumaturgy...allow higher Complexity effects without prep-work or Aspects. Heck, that's even more useful if you're doing it as Evocation.

Yes, this does mean that the Mental Stress may get a little high from exceeding your Conviction from doing this too much (especially if you're good at the variety of Thaumaturgy you're using and going all out), but that seems fairly appropriate. On the other hand, since there are no indications of a base cost ala Evocation, it won't be likely to be as bad as all that.

except that the book gives you examples that say you can use your sponsored magic as an element in and of it self, in addition to supercharging an element.

In addition, Summer magic may be used as an element for evocation, allowing evocation spell effects that encourage wildness, birth, growth, renewal, and warmth.

Quote from: page 291, Under Un-Seelie Magic
In addition, Winter magic may be used as an element for evocation, allowing evocation spell effects that encourage wildness, decay, slumber, death, and cold.

The other portion of the debate deals with whether or not a thaumaturgy spell cast with the speeds and methods of evocation follow the thaumaturgy rules about shifts of power up to your conviction not incurring mental stress.

I argue that bonuses to complexity apply because otherwise it penalizes sponsored magic users by requiring them to take refinement for both power and complexity. None of the Kemmlerian Necromancers in OW have bonuses to Control, Complexity, and Power for necromancy, and you think that they would if specializations in complexity did not aid in casting K. Necromancy with the "Speeds and Methods" of evocation.

I argue that if the duration of thaumaturgy spells remains intact (ie, the ability to create wards as mentioned in the side bar on page 288 would be quite useless if you had to pay for each exchange and not base it off the duration of thaumaturgy wards in general), then the mental stress = 0 (if complexity is below your conviction + control) should also remain intact.

Maybe give him a unique type of feeding dependency that essentially lets the Loa take control of his body for the number of scenes his has to be out of to recover his powers. During the time the possessing loa would be embracing vices unique to that Loa. For example I know some loa are supposed to dig Whiskey and Cigars, or wanton sex, etc. That could buy him a few more refresh points and it adds a mechanical means of paying the Loa.

My guess is that Living Dead is intended to act as a zombies catch. They dont mention it doing so, but Im guessing that it was their intent.

Also note that FP's who have Ritual (Item Creation) can go longer without needing to upgrade to thaumaturgy than any other type of FP.

They can a +3, a +2 and a +1 (Yay for +3 Strength, +2 Uses and +1 Focus Items, thats some wicked potion brewing).

New question, really hope I'm not repeating something that hasn't already been answered.  Lets say you have an enchanted item that is block X/armor:X/2 with 3 uses per session.  How long does each use of the item last?  Just for the one defense roll its activated for, or the entire exchange?

It seems to me that you have to factor in the duration of the effect when you create the enchanted item. The enchanted item is basically a spell in an object, and you have X Shifts of power to give to that spell. Some of those shifts might go towards duration, others would go towards other things.

You can do Psychomancy as Evocations if you pick up Kemmlerian Necromancy, but a Kemmlerian Necromancer really isn't worth it. It's a refresh 15 character considering your likely to have at least 3 fully upgraded lawbreakers if you want to pull of a Necromancer well.

Also, you are neglecting the application of science to magic to healing.

If you know the scientific medical reason why something is happening, you might be able to affect minute and accurate change with magic and cure the ailment.

-edit-

Also, I suggest that a biomancer practice on puppies. Seriously, using magic on animals is not going to give a lawbreaker, ever, and would give the fledgling biomancer enough experience to not kill his first human patient.

The magical mechano hand is totally doable I think, all it needs to do is read the character's mind for how he wants to move it, or maybe he works up a spell that transmits the thoughts of how he wants to move his hand to the mecha hand.

I have to disagree Moriden, if somebody is allowing you into their mind then it isn't a violation of their mind. Compare it to sex, with consent its enjoyable, without its rape.

The laws have EVERYTHING to do with morality, the laws are there to prevent you from staining your soul with evil, and its hard to ignore that Good and Evil have a great deal to do with Morality.

The third law says Never invade a person's mind. If you are invited in, there is no invasion. This is similar to when Harry and Elaine communicate mind to mind.

It doesn't matter what I intend to do with the sword, you want to tie the creation of a thing with the use of a thing, which is different. One can make a sword for more than just killing. What if the intent behind the forging of a sword was for defense? Defense might include killing, but it doesn't have to. Sometimes just having a sword would be enough to stop a fight.

Lets move away from the sword, lets say I conjure a brick. I can use that brick as part of a wall, or I can throw it through somebodies window, or I can use it to bash a skull in. Its just a brick.

Quote from: Iago
Creating a weapon is not a first law violation. Using a weapon to murder is. (A riff on "guns don't kill people, people do" but I think it's valid.)

I think the key word here is "murder":
Quote from: Dictionary on Murder
1. To kill (another human) unlawfully.
2. To kill brutally or inhumanly.
3. To put an end to; destroy: murdered their chances.
4. To spoil by ineptness; mutilate: a speech that murdered the English language.
5. Slang To defeat decisively; trounce.

So just going out with the intent to kill a human would get you a lawbreaker for using the sword. If while defending yourself with it, it kills a human, well, thats self defense, not murder, and a warden lawfully executing a warlock wouldn't trigger it.

Here is a different example:

Lets say I use my skill In fire Evocation to freeze water into a spike, then I kill somebody with it. Lawbreaker or not?

Quote from: Moriden
When you step back and look at it. the ic description of why the laws "taint" you is that when you cast these spells they leave a mark upon your soul changing you slightly to reflect that law violation and make you more likly to do it again, no matter what the manifestation of the spell is if your using magic with the intent that that magic will kill someone weather or not that death is right now or a year from now, you've violated the law. why theirs a distinction between successfully killing someone with magic and just really wanting to i have no idea, but we've got to work with what we have.

There, you just supported my position without even realizing it. Yes, intent  matters when you cast a spell, only Im not casting a spell intending to hurt somebody. My spell is intending to create a sword. What I do with that sword is another matter entirely, and Im no-longer directing the magic that holds the sword together. The spell is cast and it'll continue to do its job (which is to keep the ectoplasm in sword shape) until the duration ends.

Ok, here is a question. Lets say I conjure a sword, then hand it to Steve. Steve then takes that sword and goes on a murderous rampage. Do I get a lawbreaker? Probably not.

Soulfire is just the name, the effects arent always on fire, like when Harry made the super had to crush the denarien. It wasn't a flaming hand of "oh wow, that burns the skin", it was just a super large hand.

As for the bit about god getting mad at you for killing humans, I seem to recall quite a few passages in the bible that have to deal with killing people, or stoning children to death for disobeying their parents. It all depends on how far you want to take some of the stuff in there. :)

Im going to say Yes, you can dismiss your own conjurations (see redirecting spell energy on page 260), in my opinion it would just be redirecting the energy holding the conjuration together in a safe way (ie not using it for an attack or just letting it bleed into the environment).

As to the second question, Luminos is asking because of my character who has access to soulfire, and uses a Rote Spell that conjures (soulfire lets me use conjuration at evocation speed, neato) a sword. So Im interested in your opinions as well.
