DFRPG / Re: DFRPG Mechanics With A Twist: Help Needed

Also, I'm toying with the idea of allowing characters with Evocation to spend a Fate point instead of taking a point of stress when they cast an evocation spell. It would allow them to pump out a few more spells when they need to, but they'd also need to take those Compels in order to build up their FP supply.

I love this idea!   8)

Like mostlyawake mentioned, changing the setting slightly will do more for the 'feel' of the game than any mechanical alterations you may try. I have toyed around with a chronicle that takes place before the formation of the White Council, or at least before they were a credible power. Drop your players in the Dresdenverse's Dark Ages and presto - things get a lot more dangerous, and adventuring is much more par for course. You wouldn't even need to use the Nevernever, but if you did it'd be even more dangerous. Would there be more dragons? *shudder* Could Biomancy save folk from the Black Plague? *fingers crossed* And what if pre-White Council there were other groups of mages, each struggling to carve a place of their own out of the chaos. Maybe this is where the Black Council/Circle first started their plotting...? And that's just if you play in the European arena.... Just a few thoughts for ya.

Has EHP released an Errata list yet...? If not, we need to be banging on their door for one. Granted, that's the only possible typo I have seen/heard of since the release date.

3. How do you handle (or do you handle) the fact that NO magic works on you (even good things you might like)?

Have the Null spend a Fate point to be able to accept benevolent magic. Or maybe have the spell slinger set up a maneuver to give you an Aspect: A Chink in the Armor, that when tagged allows your character to be targeted by magic during the following round. Or do both, the latter being a great balance for the normal immunity.

... I wouldn't let the Counterspell be 'always active'; maybe spend a Fate point to allow it to be active for the entire combat round. Roll Conviction or Discipline at the start of the round. Use the generated shifts to increase the number of shifts the caster needs to call upon. If I had my book with me, I could stat it out more accurately....

Thems my $0.02.

I like the work you've done, but if I might make a comment or two:

The Refresh level difference between OTB and Snorkeling is pretty steep. You might consider bridging the two levels with a middle ground.

Also, when presenting these 'templates', you might present a few different 'packages' offering different stunts for the concept. An example could be a Soldier who was a sniper versus a Soldier who was a humvee gunner. The skills themselves might not need to be adjusted, but each concept having a few quick build options would save a lot of GMs a hell of a lot of time.

Keep up the work at any rate! I'd vote for this to be sticky'ed.

DFRPG / Re: Summer Knight questions...

Additionally, remember that the Knight's duties differ between the Lady, Queen, and Mother, so you're gonna be stretched thin at times. Though if I recall, the Knight is most often an escort for the Lady as she is closest to humanity.

Sixteen is a viable age. All the Changelings in SK were rather young, if memory serves. Like it was said before: the important question is "why?" And that "why" could very well be the over-all duty expected of the character.

I would do the were-lion just like a werewolf, maybe increasing his speed and making sure his bite and claws would do more damage. He'd definitely have Pack Mentality, too.

This one was too easy; 80's hair rock tends to lend itself well. I may have to try another one....

Character - the White Lion (were-lion)
High Concept: Fight to Survive
Trouble: Cry for Freedom

Where Did You Come From?
El Salvador

What Shaped You?
Lonely Nights

Your First Adventure...?
Evil Angels

Who's Path Have You Crossed?
Little Fighter

Who Else's Path Have You Crossed?
When the Children Cry

DFRPG / Re: Playing a Psychic...?

I would even say that psychics would have to deal with a threshold.

As for some kind of hurt to make things more balanced, maybe a Mental consequence, resisted by a Discipline roll, if the psychic gains more shifts than needed for an effect....? I also like the idea mentioned about having to tag an aspect on a target in order to affect them.

I could even split the template, offering a 'minor' psychic compared to more of a mental powerhouse.

And we're not even mentioning in game balances, like maybe the Fae are attracted to psychics for some reason, and it is a reoccurring trouble for them? Thoughts...?

Perhaps my example of Jean Grey was a bit off the mark from what I intended. Certainly, I would never include any level of mutants or spandex into the Dresdenverse. I agree that any use of psychic powers in the game would be a lot less impressive than the verisimilitude of wizardry. I would really like psychics to have their own place, not simply through changing the window dressing per say.

I've been playing around with a few things; maybe some sampling will give folk the basics of what I'd like to see:

Psychic Template
Musts - High Concept Phrasing (Telekinetic Bounty Hunter, or Sensitive Homemaker)
Physical (-3) or Sensitive (-3) Psionics
Supernatural Senses: (-1) i.e. emotion, thoughts, magics, psionics, corruption, faith

Options: use the Sight and/or the Soulgaze; select a Kinetic specialization (-1; which could function like Channeling without the Item Slots)

Important Skills: Conviction, Discipline, Presence, Alertness

Minimum Refresh Cost: -4

Each flavor of psionics (physical or sensitive) could provide a sort of hit list of what could be done at a base psychic energy cost (Conviction shifts), using Discipline to defend against. These might resemble Rotes at first glance; any ideas on how to make it stand on its own?

Physical Psionics: Healing Surge (3), Regeneration (4), Inner Strength (2), Death Trance (1), Ectoplasm (3), Resistance (4), Blind (3), Pain (3), Inhuman Strength (5), Inhuman Speed (5), Psychic Blade (6), Psychic Shield (6), Sleep (2), Combat Intuition (4)

Sensitive Psionics: Empathic Transmission (2), Astral Projection (6), See Aura (1), Sixth Sense (3), Perfect Memory (1), Suggestion (4), Cure Insanity (6), Insert Memory (5), Illusion (5), Possession (5), Domination (5), Mind Bond (4), Mind Wipe (6), Mind Trap (5)

Trouble: Too Much to Do in So Little Time

Background: I spent years in magnet schools before I ruined most every opportunity with drinking and drugs. I'm clean now, but...

Phase Aspect: Seriously in the Trenches

Guest Starring Redux: Now, I'm trying to get my third game done, but I can't do all of it on my own. My family is very supportive, and my friends-playtesters are eager if nothing else. It's like pulling teeth out through someone's @$$, though...

DFRPG / Playing a Psychic...?
« on: October 05, 2010, 04:17:09 AM »
The Psychic powers in the books are fairly limited. Worse, there's no Template that fits the concept. I'm thinking above Minor Talent; something moving more towards Jean Grey or psychics from the Palladium games.

I know I'll probably end up statting out templates and powers, but I was curious to see how some of you guys might handle it.

Author Craft / Re: Published Author On Board

I'm a small press, self published game designer. Our first effort - InSaNiTy the RPG - has been a local hit, allowing me to wrangle some shelf space at local gaming shops. Otherwise, we're available online through Lulu and RPGDriveThru. It's encore, Terminal Insanity, was recently released.

I stress small press; I can tell you exactly how many copies of each book that have been purchased. We're waiting to hear back from some distributors, fingers and everything else possible crossed....
