DF Spoilers / Re: Harry's Duster and the dangerous world of Chicago
« on: May 17, 2018, 01:14:21 AM »
Jim has also mentioned that harry spend roughly 20 hours a week working on magic gear maintenance.  I would assume that some of this is work on the duster.  To do this for additional items may just be too much of a time investment.
After they all got bags of diamonds, they can afford to pay someone to make and maintain some thingies, I am sure. I’d spend it on clothes and so,  but I don’t participate in supernatural battles. :)

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Confirmed Cinder Spires RPG

Congrats to him. It’s nice that he can cash in a bit. I’d never play this sort of thing, but it’s definitely nice for Butcher.

DF Spoilers / Re: AI and Magic

It’s funny you posted this. I had written and then deleted a post last month joking about this topic. Essentially, the “god” court and all minions are AI and the denarians infect via nanotechnology with the coin as a vector and power source.

DF Books / Re: If I ever sat down with JB I would ask...

Chicago has a mystique with its dark and bloody history. Imagine Harry setting up shop in say....Dallas or Nashville.
Some authors really give you a sense of place, but I’ve never gotten that from the DF. The city just seems generic “city” with a few Chicago details thrown in. He’d never been there till quite a bit into the serial from what I’d read, so that makes sense. For contrast, Anne Rice gives quite a sense of place in her works, especially New Orleans and San Francisco.

DF Spoilers / Re: Dear Jim

If you guys are impatient now, I hate to see how you will feel in the 2030s when the series still isn’t quite done at a pace of two years per book. If you’re lucky, wars, civil unrest, climate change, and the AI revolution will keep you occupied till then.  ;D

DF Spoilers / Re: Cowl is Justin reboot

Without reading glasses, I read this topic as “Cowl is Justin Robot.  I love the idea that Cowl is a Justin robot. It’s my new favourite theory.

DF Spoilers / Re: Which Denarian Coin would you choose?

Since Deirdre isn’t using hers anymore, I’d take hers. Hair blades sound lovely. Plus, I’d be like Nic’s adopted daughter and we could have all sorts of picnics and other fun stuff like he did with Deirde.

DF Spoilers / The way male writers describe women
« on: April 12, 2018, 02:38:20 AM »
I saw this article last week and immediately thought of this series. Some of the stuff is pretty funny and, while over the top, still pretty accurate. I’m putting this in spoilers section in case people quote descriptions of characters. Even my husband noted and made a joke to me about how almost all the women in the DF were described when he read it.  This is meant as a fun post, not a scathing critique. Please take it as such.

One of the funniest, for me, is the way Molly is described each book where the narrator/author talks about her breasts and their growth progress since they were in a “training bra”. That line always makes me cringe a bit. It’s just creepy! :D

DF Spoilers / Re: What clues will we get from Peace Talks?

I’m predicting some black court shenanigans in an effort to get the white court some comeuppance. This may involve a setup involving Old Man Ebenezer.

DF Spoilers / Murhpy is a doll
« on: January 19, 2018, 03:19:01 PM »
Butcher very often refers to Murphy as small and as having a button nose. The obvious question: is Murphy partially or entirely an enchanted doll?

Here’s how she could look in her true form

Wow, there is a discussion about Dresden’s sperm. Butcher really needs to get you guys some new material.  :o ;D

DF Spoilers / Re: (false)peace and the second coming

*facepalm* Deidre the savior... finally a theory I despise more than Simon the Cowl. Deidre died for her father, not for humanity.
Oh, come now. It’s a fun idea. Ultimate irony for Nic that Deirdre was a true believer in self sacrifice to save the universe and she returns in the opposite “court” as a figure opposed to him. Also, she said in the book that she was saving the worldin her candid chat with Dresden.
Quote
“We,” she said, with perfect serenity, “are fighting to save the world.”
Also, Nic gave her a gentle admonishment for loving too much.

DF Spoilers / Re: White Court Anit-Love and Blood Rites
« on: January 17, 2018, 12:02:32 AM »
We might have lost each other somewhere.

I think the white court vulnerability to real love, for those that feed on lust that is, is much like the black courts vulnerability to holy symbols. It is part of their story and nothing else. It is there because humans believe it should be there and all supernaturals depend on human stories to express themselves in the real world, the reason Mab values that Grimm book so much. If there is another logic to it than that logic just strengthens the story. That is my take on both the why and the how.
That was my first answer in this thread: it works that way because Butcher says it does and looking for much depth was the same as asking why leprechauns use pots and not magic bags. There is no actual answer because it’s all fantasy.  ;)

However, I did then add an additional bit about the biochemistry of “love” and suggested that one could use that as a foundation if one were looking for logic and depth (like Star Trek with a bit of jargon, some real theory and then quasi science). If it is an aversion to a biochemical state, could this state be reproduced artificially as the person in the short story was attempting.

Then, I asked if the white court who feed on pain, suffering, etc. were also harmed by “love” or rather by the inverse of their preferred meal (e.g. bliss (in which case, they ought to avoid people on ecstasy)).

Of course, I still think it’s tantamount to the leprechaun pot question. And, yes, I got your argument on it, I just think it’s circular logic. But, on a topic like this, there is no answer until Butcher writes it in the books.

I don’t know that much in-depth about the christian myths, but, since fantasy and magic is real in the DF universe, this is perfect for Deirdre to show up with the jesus mantle later in the story. If Nic plays some significant role in the other faction, then they will have to face each other.
