Wow Belial, that's impressive. I need to check the power math there. That's a lot in a little package. The combos there is sort of what I was hoping to see when I started the thread.

Well, what DO you want to do? There are always ways to trim down a high power concept, so it will fit a lower power level. Just give us something to work with.

Well one idea is a WWII soldier who was put on a special mission to close a gate to Hell from the other side, meaning choosing to be sealed in Hell. However he finally escapes. Power-wise, just Inhuman Toughness/Recovery. But that leaves only 2 Refresh, before mortal stunts. And 20 skill level doesn't really reflect "badass soldier before  being trapped in hell" either.

Another was a sort of Debt Collector/Enforcer - a mortal with a knife that's bound to him, part of him - so it's summonable, etc. I even thought perhaps tucking Focused Practitioner (force) as sort of a way to 'cut' things at range, but perhaps FP is a bit extreme for what's a limited focus; I just want to expand on the metaphysical nature of what a knife can do thematically.

Another concept would be a changeling information broker. But again at 20 skill level, that's not very Good. That's the information equivalent of a pickpocket, not a cat-burglar.

I guess my problem is that I want to play something very Supernatural and very Good at what they do. Feet in the Water feels like supernatural pre-teens. Which is the point, I know. I just want to play a badass dealing with big problems, instead of feeling like I have training wheels on.

Part of the issue is I don't have my books with me and am going off memory for costs. I do know I want to avoid Magic (I want to avoid that level of mechanical hijinx my first game).

I'm not asking about what characters I can do. I am very aware that pure mortals could do anything. I mean what can I build mechanically within the minimal budget. I'm not interested in pure mortals/minor practitioners. I'd rather not be a Person.

You can afford Inhuman Strength and Inhuman Toughness, especially with a moderate Catch. Half-Demon? Cloak of Shadows, maybe Inhuman Recovery and Inhuman Strength.
This is what I'm looking for - a discussion of possible powers and costs. But these read very expensive. I strongly want to avoid ending up with only 1-2 Refresh.

Don't know if the GM will let someone kit-bash a non-template character, and I doubt that coming up with homebrew powers is going to be ok - it's everyone's first time with the system.

I don't see a whole lot of what you can build. Pure mortal, barebones shifter, minor practitioner. I don't see a lot of "so much". Please elaborate.

So I may finally be able to get into a Dresden group. However, the Gm has set the level at 6 Fate / 20 skills.

I can't really think of a single interesting concept I want to play at that low a power level.

What are all the feasible options at this level? Are there amny mechanical tricks to milk it?

Thanks. I suddenly wonder if the Hydra or Cyclops would be too hardcore for a Dresden group.

That may even be the point of playing it in the first place, Haru. Greek Tragedy style.

Thanks for your points, Todjaeger.

With power level, I plan to do "Up to Your Waist" or "Chest Deep". This opens up (or makes it easier) to do supernatural things like Wereforms and Changelings, since those are the characters I want to have to begin with. Naturally I'm going to offer some pregens.

I highly recommend doing a "box set" type adventure.  Think of a set, like a hospital, university, school, sports arena, zoo, etc.  Have the adventure set there.

Then come up with your primary antagonist.  You've got plenty of choices.

Hmmm.

That does start getting the ol' idea ball rolling. An idea of perhaps having a Ren Faire pulled into the Nevernever/Faerie by a Faerie who wants to see how well the mortals can play their parts. Or perhaps a Zoo where Something has swapped the animals and humans - the humans are in the cages, with the animals' minds, and the animals are free and have the humans' minds. Or a Theater where a spell is being cast by the musicians/actors all unknowingly engaged in a giant ritual that's culminating towards Something.

Ideally you want something that touches on all of your pregen characters. You actually have an advantage, being able to decide what you want to do first and then provide your pregen PCs with Aspects that will serve as good hooks for that plot.
Right! Now the trick is coming up with what that is. This is why I'm here. :)

Dresden is strongly magic-themed, so don't be afraid to take the evil sorcerer cliche and use it as a launching point for something unique.

Part of it is that it seems somewhat old hat. I want to do something different from "Warlock and/or cultists". Also I want to avoid heavy spellcasting in the game, both for players and for myself. They're complicated and would possibly bog down a con game or combat. Although one PC I had thought might make a good focused practitioner.

What I'm looking for here is actual concrete suggestions for Plot and other elements of the game, as opposed to general suggestions. What idea suggestions do you have?

So did you play it like a Mystery, or the "Survive the night" game?

I'm heartened by your playthrough. Reading through Night Fears left me kind of Eh. In part because I wasn't sure what kind of compels you can really get off given the setting and characters, and the characters didn't really interest me much. Partially it sounds like a great game if you have players with energy.

DFRPG / Building a Con Game - Help
« on: June 01, 2011, 02:26:32 AM »
So I'm wanting to run a Dresden Files game at a convention. I've not run a convention game before, and yet I still want to give the system a whirl and show it off. But, I have looked at both free adventures (Neutral Grounds and Night Fears) and neither suit my tastes/thinking.

That means I need to design a scenario.

Now, as I understand con games go, it needs to be short. Simplistic. Simple plot, easy enough to be carried th rough with little to no places for hitches.

Also probably the easiest way to build it would be to start with a villain and work towards the PCs.

On the topic of the PCs. Because of the convention I'm going to, among the pregens I want to offer several with an animal motif. One or two weres, a pooka or kitsune based Changeling. Of course this raises the question of why PCs of that overall link are together in the same general place, and I don't know the in-game answer to that, or what their motivation is.

As far as the plot itself, I want to avoid the obvious "some evil sorcerer is going to/has broken a Law of magic".

Beyond that I have no ideas. Suggestions?

Unrelated, but how is the "control" represented stat-wise? Is there any sort of "Dependency" or rolls to control his body, or is it just an aspect compel?

For some reason I think it's weird that a water spirit is giving kinetomancy but alright.

My question is: So the spirit is IN Nick. Can the spirit be attacked inside Nick? Can its magic be shut off for some reason? Nick should be effected by thresholds, but what about other things - imagine crossing a magic circle and while Nick crosses, Adamsk can't. If other supernatural beings can sense Adamsk, they can certainly pay with him/push his buttons.

What if not only Adamsk starts reacting to odd things, but if he starts registering things as "Supernatural threats" when they aren't. The neighbor's poodle. The garden gnome. What is behind it? Is something specifically targeting Adamsk, or is Adamsk going haywire?

Adamsk might display a new response to a specific stimuli. For instance, not just "fight, Flight or meh" but "Oooh, gimmie". This could be mating/attraction to a certain being, or it could be coveting a certain object or type of object. It could also be a desire to protect something - a territorial or even "maternal" reaction to something. (Complication: the thing that Adamsk wants to protect is something the other group would prefer not to, like a monster or an NPC who has Questionable Intentions).

Ultimately the spirit has instincts. What are those instincts and drives beyond 'fight, flight or ignore"? How does it Behave in the wild, what does it do? For instance, Bob is a spirit of air, but he's also a spirit of Intellect, he's all about acquiring knowledge. This thing is all about instinct, but what do those instincts drive it to do? What is its purpose, essentially.

Nevernever attachments depend upon connections of meaning and such.

Let me tell you, even among the same Fast Food Chains, there can be a difference.

One can be run down and dirty, full of unhappy employees, accessable mainly by the interstate so its customers are only people passing through. Compare this to the single fast food joint in a small town which might be the only place teenagers can get a job - all that promise and eagerness, as well as regular customers.

One could be a place where several kids birthdays have been had. Another could have been robbed, someone even died there.

There's also probably a different atmosphere to a McDonalds in China, to one in the US.
