New Dresden Series
« on: May 25, 2025, 03:58:04 AM »
New Interview with Jim Butcher in the New York Times: (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/19/books/jim-butcher-the-dresden-files.html?unlocked_article_code=1.IU8.0fgK._YtHx8jMWgSm&smid=url-share).
In it he states that he is in negotiations to produce a new Dresden series based on three of the books detailing the war with the Red Court. Exciting news if it happens.

I can't be enthusiastic about the possibility of Butcher following GRRM's path in getting involved with TV/movie adaptations.  With 5 or so years between publishing Dresden books since 2015 and with, what, 7 more to go after Twelve Months is scheduled to be released in January 2026, I'd much, much wish that he focus on finishing Dresden.

Or he can also get a co-writer and start pumping Dresden books out every 12-24 months like he did through Skin Game.
Even then, the Dresden files wouldn't likely be done for 10 more years.

I agree with you on this, especially as long as he is projecting the series to go.  I have always thought that he needs to edit, wrap up unresolved stuff on the margins and get to the meat of the story.

At some point - and it won't be too much into the future if the writing pace doesn't pick up - I'd be willing to pay $$$ for a detailed outline of the rest of the series. I'd much rather read the books than an outline, but I'm not getting any younger and I'd like to know how the series ends before I get too old to care or the life expectancy tables catch up to me.

FWIW, Scalzi's "Old Man's War" has been in development for over a decade. Hollywood has a habit of putting books into development for any number of reasons, and never bringing a TV show to light.

I would enjoy seeing a series based on the Red Court War, particularly if it's done by one of the streaming services. I won't hold my breath waiting for it.

On the other hand, being involved in a TV series could be enough to keep things fresh and allow him to continue to work on the books without getting burned out.
