Stating a wizard's temper
« on: December 22, 2010, 03:24:00 AM »
How would I go about building in a "okay, NOW I'm pissed!" tendency toward overkill in the spell slinging department. The character concept is a warden who was literally drafted by the white council. He would really rather sit things out, but since he has a super low tolerance for BS, he was always the first wizard into a fight. After a while he just sort of gained a reputation as the guy everyone expects to get fed up and pick a fight first. In other words, his attitude is "NOW what?!" or "why am I the one who always has to deal with the ***holes?!"

What I'm looking for is a way to build in a behavior that causes other characters to go " Dude, that was just...... I mean DUDE :o"

The obvious method is to give him a frequently-compelled trouble aspect.

If that isn't enough for you, a stunt or custom power that gives a bonus to spellcasting power when angry may be appropriate.

Alternately, you could build him with a lot of evocation power and not much evocation control. There are a number of Discipline stunts on the Homebrew Stunts Master List that may be helpful if you intend to go that route.

Hope that you find this helpful.

You could even make him about average (for a wizard, I.E. superb) as far as Conviction and Disipline but put a lot of other bonuses (specializations and foci) into power alone. Then he's your average spellslinger until you get pissed and decide to throw as much power as you can into it and then take the backlash.

I just thought of An Aspect to give your character....because it's one I think I'm going to give to my AAAA Warden Character.

A Tempest in a Teapot

Taken literally that's a scary thought.

In the case of my AAAA Warden, it is not only a reflection of personality, but was also a Training Method for someone with +5 Conviction & Discipline(The Character) , "Make a Tempest inside the Teapot without breaking, cutting, eroding, magnetizing or melting it". I fully admit ripping it off from Naruto but beh!.....

I like the "I'm not even supposed to be here" aspect but tempest in a teapot is an awesome pun due to the fact I kind of conceived him as having prospero in  his family tree, so yeah, "Tempest" I'm probably going to go the compel route since it fits with the backstory. also I came up with the aspect "no such thing as a fair fight- OR OVERKILL" ;D

" Dude, that was just...... I mean DUDE"

I kinda like this one as an aspect ;)

... I now wish to play a mercenary with the Aspect "There is no overkill- only "Open fire!" and "I need to reload."

I'm playing a Warden that play has revealed to have a similarly short fuse. My suggestion to my GM was to change my Trouble to "Allergic to Bullshit."

I like that... And you can probably get away with Invoking that to spot when someone's trying to delay you, or to help intimidation, and stuff...

Yeah, I'm just waiting to hear back from my GM. I like it b/c it doesn't make the character have an irrational temper (like one of the other PCs), more of a focused one like Harry's.

The aspect route is definitely the way to go, in my opinion.  Many of those suggested are good, though I'd say this one was my favorite:
Heh, I have a wizard player with the Aspect: Loose Lid On My Can Of Whoop Ass.
It has lots of potential for both compels (temper getting you into trouble) and invokes (to REALLY let loose with the mojo when pissed).
