High Concept trouble
« on: June 28, 2010, 02:22:31 AM »
Ok, from my previous thread (See http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,19192.0.html) I've decided on a alternate healer/arcane shop. The kind of place you might find in a chinatown area or some lesser traveled shopping plaza. I'm think along the lines of a lot of fake things in the front of the shop where people would buy things like incense and the like and the real shop would be in the back. Where some of the real occult community would come for the things they need to practice. It would mainly cater to those like "minor talents", but it would be able to find what some focused practitioners and wizards need (since its run by a wizard after all).

EDIT: There is also an area for alternate healing (ranging from the traditional things like acupuncture and chakra stones to the more functional exorcisms and hush-hush medical attention for those who crossed paths with one baddy or another). It would be a fairly large place...

Now that I've got his character idea up, I'm realizing I'm comin' a little short on aspects. The idea behind the High Concept is easy, its just putting it into two to four words that's hard. How would you put the above into short terms? Wizard Healer? Magical Shopkeeper? They just don't have a good sound to them, it really just sounds like I took two words from the above paragraph and stuck 'em together.

Any ideas?

A man once told me death smiles at us all. All a man can do is smile back.

Do you think a man can change his destiny?
I think a man does what he can, until his destiny is revealed to him.

May the best day of your past, be the worst day of your future.

Maybe I'm trying to put too much in to the one aspect but, I would think the healer part would come in as well. I've editted the OP because I really didn't put too much about that in there.

That doesn't sound too... wordy to you? I just think that it sounds like I'm trying to cram it all in there. But hey, I'm not good at summarizing, so maybe it doesn't sound so bad...

meh i think a high concept is only limited by what you want it to say. It might be a little longer than your most basic stuff like Wizard Private Eye but it says what it needs to and is kinda catchy. Plus tons of plot ideas from it. Some good compels and good invocations pop to mind right away.

Keep in mind that, besides the High Concept, you have your Trouble and five other Aspects to work with. Granted, the last three are going to be tied to your Story and your Guest Appearances, but that still gives you three other Aspects which can incorporate parts of your idea.

I'd suggest breaking things down a little. The High Concept should be your character's central motivation/self-image. Other elements can come from your character's Background, Rising Conflict, or even from your Story.

I like the Arcane Herbalist and Shop-Owning Shaman ideas. (Shaman shop-keeper, shop-keeping shaman?)

(A thoroughly) Modern Medicine Man? :)
