Can't wait to see what they got!
« on: March 07, 2021, 06:12:26 AM »
Reading some WoJ and this is from 2015...  I can't wait...

Most of the older wizards have got their own crazy background of powerups which they do not advertise. Listens-To-Wind’s shapeshifting isn’t purely a matter of wizardly skill (though his healing abilities are), for example.
But here’s the key thing about people of power in the Dresden universe (and in the real world): the truly dangerous folks do not advertise. Not ever. They have no need to show off, and constantly displaying how scary they are would be counter to their own interests. [/snip]
All the senior wizards have got something up their sleeve, and every single one of them is hiding it from all the others. If they don’t know about it, they can’t plan for it, and the “knowledge is power” wizard crowd is all about planning for things.
But we are coming up on the time when people are going to have their backs to the wall and we’re going to start seeing what they’ve got. And I’ve been looking forward to writing it for nearly twenty years
Stole this from Reginald because it was so well put, and is true for me as well.

We've already seen some of it with Harry vs Ebenezar on the docks, and Harry's knowledge of Molly's capabilities certainly saved him from the instadeath that Eb threw at him as a last resort.  And there's Anastasia who was the only person that could make those unique Warden swords.  Hell, even Harry has stuff like that - remember his Bazooka Staff trick?  No one else has done anything like it that we've ever seen.

It'll be interesting to see what the rest of them are capable of.

huh I thought the quote was older than that. Pre Rashid as Gatekeeper at the Outer Gates explained.

As for Listens to Winds we now know that he was taught by Rivers Shoulders. So there's that addition.

I don't believe we have seen what Eb is actually capable of, or any of the Senior Council members "secret" abilities.  However Eb does seem to like things that deal with gravity.  I'm wondering if he is able to create a small blackhole that can draw just about anything into it, and crush it.

That is an interesting WoJ.  After we've seen how frail some members of the Senior Council have become, it's highly likely that the next time we see any of the Senior Council fight, it will be the last time they fight.  Of course, Harry might get a preview of this in the Mirror Mirror world.
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

Myself, I have long toyed with the idea that the Senior Council has seven members because there is a mantle associated with enforcing each Law of Magic.

Or, if you prefer, the Council originally was:

Merlin
Blackstaff
Warden (May have been the same as the Blackstaff once upon a time)
Gatekeeper
Time Specialist
Shapechanging Specialist (Whatever Listens-to-Wind has)
Mind Magic Specialist

..with the possible story result that Harry can bump Christos off the Council at will by asserting rights and prerogatives associated with being Warden. I've also toyed with the idea that the Wardens report to the Warden, and Luccio at least knows it's supposed to work that way.

By limiting it to the eldest, but allowing them to defer, it would have allowed hiding who was what role.

Of course, it could be something else. There's a WoJ floating around that at least one of the Senior Council also has faith (saint) magic; most probable candidate is Martha Liberty as a voodoo priestess. Although it would amuse if all of her connections to the loa were a false flag and it's really Rashid.

Well I could see LTW having Faith based magic as well.  He's an expert healer, and he was able to use the "old ways" against Shagnasty.  On the other hand Langry could be a devoted Christian who is able to combine his wizardry with powerful Faith to pull off some scary stuff.  Time will tell.

Interesting ... there was a vague WOJ that there might be a power behind the throne situation in the council, where the Senior Council aren't really calling as many of the shots as it appears.

Listens to Wind is a curious mixture, yes, he is a shaman and a shape shifter, however when it comes to medicine he depends on more than magic and chants, he has medical degrees from the top universities in the country. Yes, much is faith based, but both in the old ways and in modern medicine.  I think this mixture of both worlds helps him to see things with a more tolerant view point.

He actually wasn't - Shagnasty points out he can't, and LtW replies "Not going to bind or banish you, old ghost. Just going to kick your ass up between your ears."

LtW beats him with shapechanging combat, not by exorcising him. LtW is from a Great Lakes-area Native American group; he's not Dine/Navajo (the culture naagloshii come from).

I hadn't seen these.

Can anyone give me any pointers?

Unfortunately not much. I think it had something to do with the motion to expel Harry, but I don't recall where I saw it. And it's hard to tell when Jim means it vs when he's doing the raised eyebrow 'or do they?' to just throw theory-crack at the audience without reference to the original video.

The truly powerful do not advertise, the world suddenly notices that their opponents are no longer around.

By the way have you seen Ethnui recently?

That is what terrified the White Council, that Harry did it and won’t tell. He really shouldn’t have been able to do this. He did though.

And as far as the White Council knows,  Harry did it with just his own talents and the help of a bad-assed normal human in Marcone.

They don't know about Bob, the Spear or Namshiel, they think Harry had the horses to solo Ethniu in her weakened state on Power and Will alone.

Imagine some of the lower members of the White Council who don't know that much.

1. "So you hear about that Harry Dresden"?

2. "No what about him?"

1. "Well you know how he started the war with the Red Court?  Well I heard his girlfriend was turned by one of them.  Next thing you know a satellite falls out of the sky, killing a bunch of them"

2. "No shit?"

1. "No shit...  Then I heard he went down to South America where their leaders are...  Next thing you know, no more Red Court.  they are all dead"

2.  "Fucking A that's crazy"

1.  "Yeah and that's not the end of it.  Huge battle in Chicago where he's from.  A Titan, a fucking Titan goes there destroying the place.  Dresden is seen running the scene with her following...  Then...  Then she's gone... "

2. "What do you mean gone"?

1.  "She's gone man.  They are being pretty tight lipped about it.  This Dresden is seriously scary"
