Does the owner need to be on the property? Or could he use it on the castle and then skedaddle to Demonreach?

Oh, good point. Would be interested to see if he could recover it or if it now belongs to Mac?

Or he just left it with Mac because that is the right place. Just like the swords the things have a purpose and he can help it along. It will be usefull later.
