Brief Cases
« on: August 21, 2017, 03:03:34 PM »
Not until next Summer?
I have to admit, that's a bit disappointing...
Does anyone know why it's going to take so long?  Every story except one has already been published, so there isn't much for an editor to do...

No idea but when I read the news I assumed the rights for some of the newer stories might not have been available for an earlier release date.

I hadn't considered that, ok, I'm still disappointed, but at least there's a possible reason that I can understand...

Jim might also be writing some intros to the story like are in Side Jobs.

some have speculated that Jim butchers dry spell on writing the Dresden files has more to do with divorce settlements on the profits from the series. if that's the case we might be seeing a lot of his material start coming out fairly soon.

Yeah, the last time it was discussed, Priscilla got kinda angry. It was also denied that the divorce was settled that way.  And that it wasn't fair for us to think that jim would stoop to that level of not writing or delaying writing to avoid missed income or such due to divorce.

This wouldnt surprise me at all, given Fistful of Warlocks was only published last month.  A big part of the whole point of Anthologies always seemed to be to use established authors (like Jim) as bait to expose audiences to newer and/or lesser known writers.  So if Jim immediately re-publishes his story it sort of undercuts that reason for including a Dresden story in the first place, since the established Dresden Fans' can get it in a focused package.

EDIT: Also, apparently this also included the Audio Rights, so there's likely to need to be some studio time to do that recording.  Scheduling alone could be a significant delay, the fan-base has sort of spoken on Dresden audio being done by somebody other than James Marsters...the Ghost Story re-recording could not have been cheap.

I don't know how Penguin Random House runs their ACE/RoC imprints, and per Wikipedia RoC is just ACE in all but name, but it is possible that books published under the RoC imprint have to get farther back in line in the Penguin Random House printing schedule.  The other series I follow the publishing schedule closely is Alex Verus, which is also published under the RoC imprint.  Those books usually take the better part of a year to go from Jacka's submission to the editor, to the bookstore shelf, which seems to parallel Brief Cases.

Not a very strong set of data points, but I'm working from a position of relative ignorance when it comes to the publishing industry.  I asked Priscilla for some input in the main discussion thread in the Books section, but haven't gotten a response yet.

P.S.  And if it wasn't clear, all the other DF books appear to have been published under the ACE imprint, but Brief Cases is being published under the RoC imprint.

Honestly, I'm just glad that we have a timeframe for getting more TDF.

So does this push Peace Talks to Christmas 2018? or into 2019?

I'd be surprised if we get anything else before Halloween/Thanksgiving, if then.  It would be too quick, and kind of flooding the market.

The only thing that really bums me out about this is,that if history repeats, we won't get peace talks till Christmas or early 2019.

Looked at the official notice about Brief Cases and it stated that aside from the various short stories it will include an original novella.  Does anyone know about this story?  Has Jim said anything?
