Consider sourcing it somewhere in the Pacific Theater?  Imperial Japan was no picnic, and that's a side of the war that is often ignored outside of Pearl Harbor and the Bombs

I do not know how old you are, or if the story is still taught in schools.

I really suggest you read the Diary of Anne Frank before you continue, if you have not already.
