Audio Edition?
« on: March 06, 2015, 01:45:29 AM »
Hi Folks!

Has an audio edition been mentioned anywhere yet?

Looking at the release dates of Jim's other books it looks the Dresden books started being released in Hardback and Audio on the same date beginning with Small Favor and the Codex Alera books it looks like Princeps Fury (book 5) was the first book that got at least near coincident release.
The question isn't "Can I do this . . . "
The question you should ask is "Should I do this . . . "

I went to Audible and searched: "The Cinder Spires: the Aeronaut's Windlass". It found THE BOOK (give me the book), so I log into Audible and it says: "We're sorry. Due to publishing rights restrictions, we are not authorized to sell this item in the country where you live." That sucks I cannot pre-order yet, however it does kind of hint that it will be available at some point.
If you want the spectacularly vague page: http://www.audible.com/pd/Sci-Fi-Fantasy/The-Aeronauts-Windlass-Audiobook/B00XKCNARK/ref=a_search_c4_1_1_srTtl?qid=1432580337&sr=1-1
If you are reading this, thank a teacher. Since it's in English, thank a soldier.

Given that most of Jim's work is available in audio book format, I would think this one would be as well.

I'm able to preorder this version, so I think if you are in the US or Canada this link should work.

Thank you for the link! I tried a search on Audible but nothing came up.

Unfortunately I too got the note about not being available in "in the country where you live". I also noted tha the company that is producing that edition is a UK company so, based on the statement of "rights restriction", I assume that the negotiations for the US edition haven't been completed yet. The fact that a UK version is in the works though bodes well for a US edition!

Amazon is taking pre-orders for the Audio edition (here in the US) so it is being produced at the very least.  Which distributor in which country might not have settled out yet, but at least it will exist and looks like it will be available at the time of Release.

Amazon lists Penguin Audio as the publisher just like most of the Dresden books, so things look good for an audiobook from Audible . . .

Now we just need to find out who is actually reading it.
Getting a good narrator can make or break a audio book imho. There have been a number of books, that I liked, that when I tried to listen to them, I couldn't finish because the narrator kept mixing up the voices he/she was using for the characters, was giving the characters the wrong emotion for a given situation or (heaven forbid) was a mono tone .

No idea who, but everyone that's done the voice talent for Jim's other books have been fantastic with none of those issues.  Even John Glover, and his only failing literally was that he was not James Marsters (and we geeks hate change).  So regardless Im confident they'll cast it well, bases on that past evidence

I kind of hope we get two narrators.  One to do the male roles & another to do the female ones.  This is a multi narrative book, and it switches between male & female roles enough that it would help to have a dedicated male & female reader.

While male & female narrators can alter their pitch to do a passable representation of the alternate gender, it is hard to pull off.  Especially for multiple male & female roles like the book has.

BTW; Yes, I've read the book.  You could get one at SDCC if you followed the @acerocbooks Twitter.  I will likely review this weekend, as I have just finished it, but this is where my knowledge comes from.

Looking through the book, there are 6 different voices in total.  Male & female voices are a roughly equal, if you include the cat.  If you just count humans, there are more female voices.  So we likely will be looking at a female narrator.  If that's the case, I really would like Tara Strong if at all possible.

Just checked Amazon and the Audio CD shows Euan Morten as the reader. Not sure who he is, but he seems to be one of the readers for Dune, which I have on audio . . .

Euan Morton is correct!  You can listen to sample clips of audiobooks he's done before by searching for his name on Audible.

I listened to samples of Euans work on Audible prior to my earlier post and I'm not sure how I feel about his voice. I'll be getting the book first thing on Sept 29th for the first read and then will likely pick up the audio version from Audible for subsequent reads. (Thats what I do with the Dresden books!) If Euan's performance grabs me then I will certainly pick up the rest of the series on audio as they come out. This is what I did with Codex Alera, though I ended up going with only the audio version for the books after book 1. Kate Reading did a good job on the series.
