OK, I'm going to display the depths of my computer illiteracy here.  Why is it that some threads display neatly within one screen, and others run wide and I have to scroll across to read them?

Likely because someone's put an image or a particularly long web address in one of their posts, and it forces the width of the message wide, because those things can't be wrapped.
