DF Spoilers / Re: Name the next book! (Unofficial Fan Contest begins!)
« on: September 25, 2021, 05:26:31 PM »
I voted for Spell Bound, but how about Tied Knot?  Drug Ring?  Veiled Threat?  Dresden titles are fun.
I'm picking up Knot and Veil and even Ring, but how does Drug fit in?

Sorry HEAD CASE is taken for Bob’s origin story, with Harry on a paternity case tracking down Bob’s parents. I hope.

The skull is literary a container for a talking head, and very neurotic (Bob’s second favourite ‘rotic’)

We need it at least as a novella, and Jim loves writing for Bob.

What about DEATH MATCH? Harry is marrying an apex sexual predator and is likely to end up in a fight to the death/duel leading up to his nuptials, better yet a wedding morning duel by someone from the White Court or White Council trying to derail the wedding, or something else Raith had already promised his daughters hand to.
I hadn't considered that as a Bob story, but that sounds fun! We will have to self-actualize it into existence.

Death Match sounds more like the wrestling book, but could fit.

DF Spoilers / Name the next book! (Unofficial Fan Contest begins!)

Conspiracy Theorist suggested Butcher might not be settled on the name of the next book (described as spanning the year after BG as Harry deals with the fallout of recent events).

CT suggested SPELL BOUND, which got my brain thinking.  I came up with HEAD CASE, FAMILY MATTER, and COURTING DISASTER, but I thought it might be fun to open it up to everyone to propose their ideas.

The Rules:
  • Two word title, each with the same number of letters.
  • It should be a pun off a common phrase or idiom.
  • It should relate to the proposed plot.
  • This is definitely not official so nobody should expect to win anything; it's just for fun!

Just post your ideas, and I'll add them to the list. Votes can be changed as more options are added, but you can only vote once.

DF Spoilers / Re: DragonCon 2021 Starborn or Star Born?
« on: September 25, 2021, 01:49:02 PM »
We have to presume Jim is watching “What We Do In The Shadows” if so then one of the Courts Minor is likely an off-shoot of the White, energy Vampires which feed off boredom and frustration.

The ‘Beige’ Court.

Like the White Court but without their ethereal beauty, style and elan, and because of their very nature (which is very off-putting) their numbers are very small as getting any human to breed with them is nigh impossible when their idea of sexy lingerie is a beige cardigan with wooden buttons and crumpled up tissues and butterscotch candy in the pockets.

One would imagine their very presence would inhibit normal White Court function making them outcast.
Sounds like a Boyle family reunion.

Quote
I note that Jim isn’t settled on the title “Twelve Months” there no pun in it, and no real tie in with the other Titles. A quick look at synonyms for “year” in Merriam-Webster includes “spell”. The year includes his courtship of Lara under obligation to Mab through the Winter Knight Mantle and is pushing Harry towards the events of Mirror Mirror in this unexpected but very welcome additional volume. “bound” represents both that year obligation AND the journey that Harry is taking to Mirror Mirror and his abduction by alt Harry.

I therefore suggest as an alternate title to “Twelve Months” “SPELL BOUND”

Much more in keeping with the themes of the series, Harry’s current predicament, the naming convention and love of wordplay. Besides you know Lara has some very special handcuffs ready for her Wedding Knight.

Oh yes, and Harry’s summoning by Alt Harry should be in the wedding ceremony itself, when Harry says “ I Harry..... “ and he hears his true name spoken by someone else in his voice instead of the fake version he was going to use for ceremony. The perfect call back to Storm Front.

“My name is Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Conjure by it at your own risk.” This is before the Grave Peril split, so Alt Harry has had fair warning.
I think it depends on the plot. If it's all about Harry's mental state and getting Beside out of Justine, I'd opt for HEAD CASE.

If it's him getting therapy while helping Justine and helping Thomas and working things out with Eb and getting aquatinted with his pending life with the White Court, I could see FAMILY MATTER being apt.

If it's mostly about engagement, wedding, and faction issues, I think COURTING DISASTER would be perfect.  ;D

DF Spoilers / Re: True Teleportation

For River Shoulders, I could see his aura wave grounding out whatever theoretical reality warping Drakul was attempting.  That's kinda the sasquatch thing anyway.
Re-reading the fight scene, particularly Drakul stepping away from Rivers as he charges, and where he appears above Rivers as Harry hits him with power, his movement is more like flashstep from Bleach. Which is just high speed that's so fast it can't be seen. Faster than Aristedes could manage.

It's really too bad Harry can't just consult with Cat Sith on creating a fixed doorway between two points, like he did in CD.

Different types of teleportation? Different risks? This is a banned knowledge in the White Council and may be for a number of reasons.

1. It is lethal
2. It is difficult
3. It breaks one or more the laws of magic.

Classically teleportation actually invokes the destruction of the test subject and their reification in another place, essentially death and rebirth, a classic breach of the Fifth Law, meaning it’s both points 1 and 2. This may only have been realised some time AFTER it became known, leading to it’s proscription, after the formulation of the Laws. Point 2 was relevant at that point it probably required a powerful practioner, could end badly, be blocked easily by counterspells etc. The knowledge would have been lost at the practitioner level over time relegated to the library. Drakul must really have been annoyed that River Shoulders was an opponent old enough to know countermeasures. Same with Namshiel, he was old enough to know countermeasures to the countermeasures and it must have required considerable focus by him and Marcone to avoid it going badly against the Titan.
Harry made the escape potion in SF that was half speed, half teleportation. He didn't seem concerned about it being illegal. Or at least not that I recall.

I won't speculate on danger or difficulty, because Bob is beyond average wisdom and would negate a lot of concern there. But I'll point out that the phrasing Harry uses, "Is this the super speed one, or the teleportation one?", seems to imply that he's done both before.

I agree that most proposed methods of teleportation seem to skirt a law being broken. But only for sticklers like Morgan looking for an excuse.

Personally I like the idea of folding reality between two points to move between them. Like Harry describes Drakul as disappearing like behind a telephone pole. Just warping reality so that two non-congruent points are touching via magic, but without a visible doorway or portal.

I don't think that's what Drakul did, unless River's counter managed to unwarp reality. And Marcone's technique seemed to involve the hand pointing at the destination, which is more like movement than warping. Like he's physically representing his intention to "stop there".

Ooooh, Marcone couldn't have been using the NN, Ferro was locking all the entrances in Chicago..
If I recall, Ferro was shutting down the earth, and Vadderung was shutting down everything above it. And at the time of Marcone's magic, Vadderung was laying on the ground half dead. So who knows if he was still shutting things down.

Didn't ghost-Harry teleport in Ghost Story?

Edit: yeah, sort of teleportation, but he compares it to the teleportation potion from Storm Front, in the sense that he broke into pieces and then reformed elsewhere.

So I guess it depends on your definition of true teleportation. Nightcrawler is a teleporter, but he travels into a different dimension to reappear elsewhere, if I recall. Sandman Slim can teleport in a sense using a key to move through shadows.

So what's really true teleportation?

DF Spoilers / Hell's Bells - Nick vs John
« on: September 22, 2021, 03:48:21 AM »
My current assumption is that the Big Apocalyptic Trilogy will be three different apocalypse stories falling one after the other, with the second being a Biblical apocalypse with hellions being unleashed.

My other assumption has been that Nicodemus will kick it off.

But now I'm wondering. Is there a chance he doesn't make it to the BAT. Does his feud with Marcone end with him dead, Marcone in possession of the noose and a majority of the coins, and in charge of the apocalypse plans?

Or does Nicodemus make it to Hell's Bells, kick things off, but die in the process, and Marcone grabs the noose when opportunity presents itself?

I bet Cristos could throw a monkey wrench in things and expose the role and purpose of the Blackstaff to the Council, in an attempt to either get it for himself or a trusted lackey. I'd guess himself if he's Cowl, or a lackey if he's not.

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry actually should be out of the White Council

Harry is also the Warden of Demonreach, like Kemmler was before him (a few places back, I think).
Harry is also a starborn, whatever that actually means.  We do know that Drakul is in that small club.

It also doesn't help that Harry didn't show his face around Edinburgh much.  There wasn't a human being to balance out the terrifying reputation.
Yeah, but Joe Wizard doesn't know those things. They just know what's been in the rumor mill, and those two things are likely not disseminated.

I mean I'd dispute the claim that the Red Court was 'actively pursuing peace' given the fact that they released a bio-weapon attack on the White Council's headquarters less than 24 hours before, but the rest is true.
As far as we know, it was only suspected that they did. Harry was also there at the same time, demanding more bloodshed and threatening violence in the hall, while Arianna was there asking for peace and a path forward.

So in the eyes of his critics and those that fear him, which one dropped a bio-attack that threatened to continue the war?

You have to remember that to the average Joe Wizard, Harry Dresden is a nightmare.

Indisputable Facts
  • Harry is the son of an expelled wizard that had a death sentence with the Council and was known to hang out with monsters.
  • Harry was adopted by a Warden in good standing with the Council, a war hero no less that helped bring down Kemmler, but Harry killed him with magic in unknown circumstances.
  • Harry openly flaunted tradition by practicing openly.
  • Harry started a war that could have been avoided, which got a lot of wizards killed.
  • Harry committed genocide against a supernatural nation that was actively pursuing peace.
  • Harry abandoned his duties after committing genocide, leaving his Council-sworn duty of protecting Chicago to a rogue apprentice wanted for murder.
  • Harry became the Winter Knight, the murderous assassin for the evil Sidhe Court.
  • Harry is a close associate and suspected lover of White Court royalty.
  • Harry performed necromantic magic and was not punished.
  • Harry killed with magic and was not punished.
  • Harry's apprentice performed mind magic and was not punished.
  • Harry worked with Nicodemus Archleon.
  • Harry worked with Mab numerous times before becoming her assassin.
  • Harry killed a Summer Lady.
  • Harry was involved in the deaths of the WinterLady and another Summer Lady.

It's no wonder he lost the popular vote, and you don't even have to bring speculation into it.

What do you think the choice he made that altered things?
My guess is that Harry didn't say he loved Susan in the basement of Bianca's mansion. She went feral, knocked him out but didn't kill him because of the poison in his blood, so she killed Justine instead.

Upon waking up, Harry got out and headed upstairs to find Susan fully turned with Bianca. He couldn't kill Susan, so he walked away rather than fighting.

I also like to think he still beat the Nightmare while unconscious, and ate his power. By not using it to destroy the mansion, is stayed within him, partially corrupting him.

I also think Bianca could have sent footage of Harry's attack at the party to the White Council, which declared him a full warlock. Since the place wasn't completely destroyed like it was in GP, security footage might have survived.

Thus Harry starts on the dark path with isolation and regret while being hunted by everyone.
