DF Spoilers / Re: Which Denarian Coin would you choose?
« on: April 09, 2018, 08:32:46 AM »
I guess Anduriel if you have to have one forever, he'd expend the effort to convince your conscience what you're doing is right.

If you want to get rid of it later, Lasciel sure seems like a nice "experience"  :-*
she is nice experience plus she needs combat capable host instead of her natural form. besides the skills gained from her would sell for lot of bucks.

I  think jim gonna use time travel diffrently then we think. not like amber or he pops to one or two years past to fix a non important tool in his arsenal. if i write the time travel part i make it so he goes way back to ether the original merlin times or ancient egypt to chase and stop big bad from crashing the timeline.
travel to Merlin era gives us much cleaner focus on knight of cross harry Dresden while going ancient Egypt gives us excuse to uncover the nicks past and maybe save lash way before she becomes the lashciel we know.
also time travel to fix little chicago feels cheap while ability to call Nicodemus by his oldest name works much better as end of book harry calling biggest denarian by his true name makes perfect note to signal the harry become the bigger power between them.

DF Spoilers / Re: Will Harry get back to basics?

I think a blasting rod is a given considering his demonstrated skill with wood. I cannot wait to see some more arctic fire balls. I think a shield bracelet would be a top priority for Dresden because I do not think his staff is a good focus for that. Plus freeing up his staff for other purposes makes sense. However, somewhere Harry mentioned that he needs access to metal working tools to make his bracelet (SG maybe?). I doubt that a bracelet will be ready to go. I full anticipate his Duster to be back up to snuff on all the protective enchantments. Finally, I would love to see Harry take a page out of the carpenter handbook and invest in a little armor for when he knows he is going to throw down (ex during the raid on Hades vault). As someone mentioned above, forearm guards would be an excellent idea considering all the hand to hand combat he engages in. I think this actually has a chance given Harry just had his forearm broken from a staff blow.
harry has access to metal working tools of highest quality due being mabs personal hitman so shield bracelet is  piece of cake for him as long as he has time to visit atctis tor for couple of days. And i bet that mab orders the smith helping him to use best quality ingredient and enchant the better then harry capable of. on rpg terms harry building shield bracelets with what resource 1 or 2 with mabs help he can make resource 4 or 5 gear with no more problem as one quick enchant from her god mother made that duster minigun prof for whole night.

DF Spoilers / Re: Dresden Files - could it be adapted to a video game?

Game Luddite chiming in: What about the more recent Fallout games as a model? Replace a lot of the weapons crafting with. . . magical weapons crafting. (Seconding time constraints. And putting forth Assassin's Creed style Eagle Vision Sight; just make it look a lot more trippy, and using it actually distorts the screen with flashbacks for a period of time after you bring it down.)

Though I'm always down for anything that uses the Arkham games as a model. That's what you wish a wizard felt like.
well fallout style is not works for good dresden game as lot of the current fallout and elder scrolls games bought to create mods were end game is using sluttiest armor you can find to beat big bad and i kinda dont want modding in the game because its fertile ground to make time travel mod and says legit content but kindlers idea is good as you need certain events to create the mind dominate spell you need to bang lara and it feels dangreous enough to play and have fun.

So as a bit of a what if - could you do a sort of vaguely Witcher/Mass Effect/God of War type game. Heavy on story and action of course, throw in some Arkham style detective work and puzzle solving and keep the comedy coming and I think it could be a lot of fun. The hardest thing to decide would be how much dialogue would be yours to choose I guess. I suppose you could do it like Mass Effect and have a sort of "canon" story and the rest are "what if" scenarios.

Anyway I am keen to here your thoughts, what could it look like, what would it need, what to avoid etc. Have at it!
thats a good idea but how you make the game is kinda problem as we have meet the team Sherlock deduction moments as well as balls to the walls saints row style action in same bucket. So we kinda need adamantium solid plot as the moment we gave player ability to craft his first spell they gonna build spells or mods to make sure their crazy theory is legit game material and create forum fires to prove its word of jim that susan is time traveled kuromori and she is actualy murpy's secret lover kinda whack job situations.

So the things to make sure game works perfectly
vampire masqurade style game plan were player is member of paranet papers who learns his powers from one of the faction leaders.
flexible but strict magic rules so no time travel powers or mind control unless you are specific faction or NPC( moly for mind control and big bad for time magic stuff as only users)
good character creation system to create any character except dresden and company( this one needed to be hard code blocked so no mods to change then make time walking adventures of dresden mod or expension pack)
lot of area to play but solid reason to keep retuning dresdens gang for either info or plot advancement.
lot of deadpool quality snark
harry vision were player sees important clues and selective npc with special mental comments like seeing lara raith in bikini triggers special snark on harrys mind.)

as for fea knight wizard in the past i bet original merlin is similar to harry worked as knight both as keeper of Excalibur and may be as winter or summer knight during the Arthur's reign thus harry might be tracking Merlin's steps in current time hell harry might be reincarnation of the Merlin it self with amnesia to keep himself from danger.

Depends on what you mean by 'basics'.

Will some versions of his old favorite tools (probably upgraded ones) reappear?  I wouldn't be surprised.

Will things ever be the way they were before?  No, I don't think so.  That was the whole point of the book Changes.  I don't think the Harry we knew in the old days will be back, it wouldn't make any sense.

Harry is entering bigger leagues now.  He may well have a lab again someday, but probably not like the old one.  He might make a potion now and again, but more likely we'll just see the potions already made and ready to go...when he's not using something heavier duty.
or he might build paranet papers R&D division and get toys from there

yep considering she is literally baby when born there is at least 10 or more years to let her understand and handle the power she has.

you know how about we build it as crime show drama  like flash were  papa raith is still the big bad but we add lets say 5 to 10 episodes of harrys regular investigation work like few cases from police and may be job from lara or white council as  to fill the season

I think it'd fit better as a movie, personally. I've seen what they've done to the Shannara books to shoehorn them into a TV series, and it doesn't work. Like, at all. It's patently terrible in every regard, and I curse the names of those responsible.

Also, in terms of casting, Kitai being mistaken for a boy is an ancillary thing. They can skip things like that, because it's also a little difficult to convey the intricacies of Marat's gender-neutral child rearing for a movie. It's Kitai that's important, not the gender reveal (which was reasonably predictable anyway—writers don't correct someone's use of a noun without it being important (see Ramona restating, "My seven evil exes, yes," after Scott says, "I have to defeat your seven evil ex-boyfriends?" in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.))

Also, film production takes a while. Kids age. Tavi being small for his age and growing rapidly between Academ and Cursor is fine and all, but casting a fourteen year old kid for Furies is fine when he'll be twenty-something by the time Princeps rolls around. Space filming out a bit so the kids can age, and you don't need to cast the same roles more than once. You've got six movies to do, so it works out pretty well without any special consideration. Physical descriptions aren't all that critical, in my opinion, so long as the characters are right. Aldrick doesn't need to be a hulking giant, he just needs to be imposing and scary. Tavi doesn't need to grow up huge so much as we need to see him grow, if that makes sense. As for the skin tone differentiation between cities, it never really mattered in the books, so I don't see it being important in an adaptation.

And as a series... I don't think it'd work well. At least, not as well as Dresden. First, budgets for TV are spread much thinner, and are usually smaller than a movie's budget. It cost five grand each time they showed a vampire getting dusted on Buffy, which is why you only see it once in a while in the first two seasons (you just hear the noise most of the time). It's also why shows like Heroes had most of their potentially awesome fights (Peter vs. Sylar, which is what everyone wanted but never got) be through freaking telekinesis: it's cheap, and you need to stay lean across a twenty-episode season, or you'll wind up needing to do a few bottle episodes by the end.

I also don't think that the books lend themselves naturally to a series. The plot breaks aren't really easy to manage. It's a Two Lines, No Waiting situation, where the story is shifting between Bernard/Amara, Tavi and Friends, and sometimes Isana (though she's often tacked on to one or the other). In Academ's Fury, Isana's working to get aid for Calderon, Tavi is trying to thwart a plot and save the country, and Bernard and Amara are fighting a battle. The action is happening simultaneously, so breaking it up across multiple episodes is rough, and tends to convey a passage of time that isn't accurate in the context of the story. Dresden would be like 24, by contrast; everything is going down in thirty-six hours, and that's clear from the start. But the passage of time during a pitched battle, like in Academ, is dicey to convey correctly if the perspective flips back and forth to Tavi and Isana across different episodes. In a movie, it's simpler, because things aren't interrupted by a week-long break.

And, if I'm being honest, the Codex Alera's length is primarily due to narration. You have pages and pages describing individual fight scenes, which is suitably awesome for a book, but really only takes a couple of minutes of screen time to show. There's a lot of narration describing the benefits of Aleran troop discipline, too, but it's way easier just to show that.

And Bernard and Amara's two-week jaunt through the woods with a certain someone in Captain's Fury can be cut down to about four scenes, total.

It's a different story with Dresden, where so much of the charm of the series relies on the narration that a voiceover is a necessity, and which will necessitate stretching things out across a few installments. It fits both the urban fantasy stuff—Harry explaining the way magic works, for instance, or the different vampire courts—alongside the Noir style for the first several books. You're not going to get that with Codex, so some things can be summed up on screen pretty quickly.

I mean, I can write a script for Furies of Calderon with a 100-minute runtime, fairly easily, without sacrificing much of anything. I'd even have Gaius do a Galadriel-style voiceover in the beginning with his prologues, just so that you can juxtapose his grandiose ideas with a pan zoom onto Tavi chasing after a sheep.
kinda agreed with you mate but we do have plot breaks to make it long enough as fans want to see the lore and training behind the furycraft plus the whole academy portion and lots of the army portions can be shown long few episode arcs and if we throw some side content like max's adventures during academy years to mix we have solid long seasons and the whole journey to cannim lands and back is kinda pergant for few side plots.

codex alera can be made series with each season focusing on one book but the main problem is Marat females in the first book being generally topless thus forcing series to pg 18 fro the start.

we can work with group of immortals angle as any way we want but just simple and easiest angle would be pop a Illuminati clone for back up plot line where harry needs to solve a case for them while getting info about this organization with end of book  reward would be they invite harry to be one of them. Another plot idea would be use the group as teachers of Maggie Jr's school staff and kick a instruductory  adventure with xanatos gambit as beginning point.
