DF Spoilers / Re: How big was the Boarding House?

That assumes a lot unless he knew Harry was coming back. And according to portal mechanics as described in Skin Game that might change with The Brighter Future Society being there instead of Dresden.
Not necessarily, at the very least it is likely one of the thinner spots in a town who's veil has been Thinning for years.

I dont really know how much (if any) of the defenses that Lea put on the NN side would remain; normally Id say they very much would Not, but I dont really get how she was able to do make the Garden in the first place without similarly changing it's Real World location and given how Edinburough's defenses seem to have remained through a change of ownership (fae to wizard) I think it's possible the location could have been changed by a Wizard's long-term residence enough to have some kind of tactical advantage aside from just the location it connects to on the NN side.

Given that Jim has also said he'll lie in Q&A if necessary to prevent a spoiler - and "I'm not going to tell you" in reply to asking if the prisoner is the original Merlin would pretty much be a confirmation - I'm putting limited weight on that one.
I dont think he ever actually said that, but I guess I could be wrong...

Since Harry is good at making magical items, for his age, wouldn't it be interesting for him to spend some time with Klaus the toymaker. I would like to see snakes in a can but with real snakes.
He honestly, nerdily loves to design and make his little magic gadgets, I would really love to see him actually study with any one of the masters of that Craft.  I want o see Klaus under any circumstances, but if Harry had to learn Craft-Magic I think it would be more (sadistically) entertaining if he were to study with Mai instead...  ;D

One more "Fact" we know is that Uriel refers to that type as a Half-born, which for me puts them in the category of some sort of changling-style mixed race that is breeding true rather than having the Fae Changling Choice. Actually, they are probably most closely related to the berserker-style werewolves, the biker-gang kind that is born with a rage-spirit.  Also worth nothing that on several occasions when a particularly powerful Wampire is tapping their hunger powers it has literally lowered the temperature of the room, caused frost to form, etc.  (Pretty sure Papa wraith did it sometimes, and I know it happened in Bigfoot on Campus)

Maybe, but that bugs me. Intellectus is supposed to be more absolute than that, I think. Even if Harry's limited version isn't, I mean... how far does the effect extend? If a non-human being with full Intellectus tells an adult human about them, does the human just instantly forget about it?
Probably would forget, unless they had some other way to /make/ the memory stick.  And Id assume harry could still spot one with his Sight if he actually knew what he was looking for, though a lot of the time he actively ignores most of what his Sight shows him in basic self-defense.   Alfred's Intellects has always been the most limited example of it from day one, and is particularly focused on his Inmates, which I think is a lot of why he was never very practiced at recognizing mortals.  But if one of the Creepers were to get locked up in the Well I think he'd start taking notice a lot more. Though its a good point that Creepers have very little reason to venture out to an island with no children to target; they strike me as more a zoo and candy store crowd.

Angels have full intellectus. What happens if Nicodemus asks Anduriel, "what supernatural entities are within one mile of me"?
Personally Id dial down the radius just to avoid getting overloaded :P  But I see your point, anyone else Id say he may simply not be /allowed/ to reveal that aspect of Reality, it seems specifically reserved for Children.  But he's already breaking the rules, so may he has told him, maybe he's aware that they exist even ifhe cannot sense them directly or retain personal memories of them.  Or maybe a Fallen bonded as long and tightly as those two can just provide/overlay the sensory capability like how Lash let harry ultrasound see in the Dark.

EDIT: Even worse... what if a kid writes about the haunts and Ivy picks up the information? When Ivy hits whatever age makes you forget about the haunts, does the information get deleted from the Archive, or reclassified from "nonfiction" to "fiction", or what?
ooh, that's dark...  She's likely a special enough case that can just KNOW that sort of thing, retain it without risk of revealing it and damaging whatever Cosmic Machinery is in motion.  Like a Fallen, if anything could keep you from Forgetting it would be (cue ominous voice) THE ARCHIVE...

No.  Moving a sizable working castle from Scotland to Chicago and having it’s mortar dry enough for it to be a secure facility in under six months would be impossible even with modern tech and magic.  It is too much mass to move unless a god steps in and finger snaps the building from one place to another.  Cash isn’t going to influence a god in that context.
Im sorry, are you arguing that /Magic/ is incapable of making mortar dry?   :o ;D

Im not saying anyone finger-snapped and made it teleport, though Im also not saying didnt do something close (aka NN Ways instead of sea-shipping) since doing it that much the Easy Way would likely be more Debt than Marcone would think it worth.  But it absolutely, 100% does not take 6 months for mortar to dry in any universe.  Certainly not in any universe with modern concrete technology, and especially not in one with both that and magic.  Seriously, next month we are putting up a three story steel and concrete structure, plus all the processing equipment that goes inside it, during a 10-day scheduled mill shutdown and with maybe two months prior mobilization on the part of the contractor.  Even Harry noted that they'd likely had the plan in place and ready to move as soon as he was out of the way, so really the only stage that had to happen in the six month period is final assembly; there is a very real possibility that Marcone had the castle shipped, staged and ready in a wharehouse just outside of town.  Hell,If give it even odds that he had planned to put it up somewhere else and just change the final location when a last-minute opportunity arose (Im assuming he gets something out of it being the former bastion residence of a paranoid wizard which was coincidentally fortified on the NN side by one of the most powerful fae around).

Who knows, maybe Marcone will get Gard to work out some levitation runes, raise it over the clouds and see if anything wakes up.
You know, all joking aside it DOES mention that there are tonnes of gargoyles on the thing, getting more and more ugle as you go up.  Historically those are supposed to be supernatural guardians, I wonder if his are similarly legit in some fashion (He's not the sort to decorate like that without purpose)

We dont know who it is.  We have two WOJ regarding Who it is not: it is not the original Merlin, who would not sound at all british he says, and it is not Loki who is suffering the very literal Norse punishment of venom dripping in his eyes.

The original Merlin, does he sound British?
He’d probably sound so unintelligibly British that you wouldn’t be able to tell he was speaking English.  No, he’s not the guy in Demonreach.

Is Loki in demonreach?
He is not in Demonreach. There are no snakes dripping venom in there, and Norse gods are awfully literal about that sort of thing.  I don't know if we will hear from him or not... Well by the end, we are going to get Wagnerian by the end.  Wagnerian for you opera fans.

Well, someone bought a London Bridge made of stone took it apart and shipped it to Arizona and put it up over a man made lake in the middle of the desert..
Well, to be fair it sounds like that one actually just used the original stone to facade over modernized concrete structure.

What Marcone was /wanting/ to do was this:

Which makes sense in light of Marcone, Morgan, and Murphy all having inspiration taken from that show.  Makes me really think there was some magic significance to it like in the show, either the castle itself provides different protections, he was trying to control the NN side, or maybe like the show it satisfied some magic spell condition.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: couple of quick points/thoughts
« on: July 26, 2018, 08:47:37 PM »
Welcome!

The two most popular theories Ive seen for Cider Spires are basically the same idea: either it's a post-apocalyptic Earth (Dresden or otherwise), or some think it's a post-apocalyptic Alera and the crystal tech we see is some sort of evolution of Furies.   In addition to what you mentioned there is mention of animals that are thought to be mythological (lions, horses, etc) as well as some very earth terms (and cultures by the sound of things) for the different spires.

Personally I dont think it's outsider because I think their rule would be more...dramatic.  And I dont really see them just leaving these Spires alone.  My money is on aliens.  The real question is how many different /kinds/ of aliens?  The books mention a surface dwelling Enemy (You there yet? It's not really a spoiler), but there was also that early mention of sailers spotting an "Archangel"

What follows is what I /hope/ for, but cannot really expect:
Dresden is a series focused on Human forces. Alera introduced us to a galactic threat in the form of the zerg vord, so maybe (just maybe) this story of with all it's crystal energy and strange beings are to be the Protoss of some giant shared Butcherverse, and years from now we'll all be reading a huge interstellar cross-over tale that is what Starcraft wished it could be.

Quantus,

I suppose a small castle on a big lot makes sense.  Otherwise it would have been phyisically impossible to get the castle moved and built in 6 months.
eh, very little is physically impossible when money is no object.  It could be done (by a billionaire) even in the real world (You'd be amazed at what Ive seen thrown up during the 10-day yearly shutdown some of these plants and mills do all their maintenance in).  For a stacked-stone structure the real bottleneck is the physical transportation of the material (deep-sea shipping and customs delay) but Id say there's even odds that Marcone arranged for NN transportation.

DF Spoilers / Re: Zoo Day and the great Masquerade
« on: July 26, 2018, 01:04:51 PM »
I have to say I really dislike this concept of beings that adults can't ever know about. It doesn't seem to fit well with stuff already established in the series.

- When Harry was a ghost, Lea made a big deal about how his ghost-memories were perfect, not stored by his brain but in the universe itself. So if he knew about these creatures as a kid but was made to forget later, he still should have remembered as a ghost.
He had to think about things first to get caught in that, and it was dangerous enough he actively tried no to, lest he loose a decade on a Pink Floyd Album.  If he'd starte ruminating on "the first time he fought a monster" he might have gotten a different memory than the HWWB/Justin scene.

- What if some haunts are hanging around on Demonreach when Harry uses his intellectus to see if there are any monsters around? Shouldn't intellectus override whatever power or effect keeps them hidden from adults?
Given that it apparently affects the "adult" intellect of Mouse and only his Guardian-ness seems to (barely) get past it, it's possible the Creeper's mass  protection would count him as Too Old to sense them.

I think maybe you're putting too much emphasis on the word "trained." I don't think that it's the deliberate purpose of those creatures, so much as they just happen to be creatures that are only strong enough to prey on children and who, in turn, children are able to fight back against.

I think it's not that someone way back said, "We need to create these things to train children," so much as "These are natural hazards for children, and by overcoming them, they learn to take care of themselves."
Mouse's conversation with the Creepers indicated otherwise, it spoke of a governing Law, and Laws have to be Written, and with Purpose.  As long as they dont physically harm them (thus leaving evidence, I say from under my oversized tinfoil hat) they are allowed to challenge, haunt, and otherwise terrorize them as they see fit, at somewhere in there it specifically mentioned it as a form of training/conditioning/preperation (will look for the quote when I get home).

DF Spoilers / Zoo Day and the great Masquerade
« on: July 25, 2018, 12:36:50 PM »
So, one of the longstanding aspects of the Dresden Files is that somehow, despite there being no real coordinated effort to hide the Supernatural, the mortal world maintains a nigh supernatural ability to simply ignore what happens around them and move on with their lives.  Everytime this comes up the explanation is more or less that Humans are great at ignoring things that make them uncomfortable, and have managed to hide the Truth from the collective human society without any significant effort.

Zoo Day showed us that this is actually a much deeper, actively reinforced function of our world.  Turns out that every child is Trained, actively and with purpose, that there exist things that will prey on them but that nobody in Authority will be capable of recognizing or remembering, so it's better for yourself and everyone to handle it however you can, tell nobody, and move one with your life.  What's more, it seems like this is a specific charge and function of these Creepers, something that divinity like Mouse is Required to respect.

The Children of the DV are all being Conditioned from an early age to pretend that anything labeled supernatural cannot (not Will Not, CANnot) be recognized by Authority, and you will be labeled crazy if you try to make them.  So Dont Try.  This is a patterned response that a whole class of creature exists solely and specifically to Train into mortals from an early age.
