Author Craft / Literary Wikipedia
« on: December 09, 2009, 11:00:25 PM »
Found something I thought you guys would be interested in.  I may just be new to the uptake, but I stumbled upon this site called Tvtropes.com, and its freaking fantastic.  Its like a wikipedia for modern literary structure, but with a focus more on Stan Lee than Shakespeare. I have never found a place that had so meticulously broken down the modern archetypes and well...literature.  I mean, where else could you get a multipage breakdown, with examples, of a Xanatos Gambit, Jerkass Dissonace, or the Sidekick Ex Machina (which btw is an extreme form of Hypercompetant Sidekick and similar in application to Manic Pixie Dream Girl).  Its got a listing of villain levels from Mook to The Dragon, and and a listing of the Flying Brick superpower set.   I have now spent that last hour crawling through it soaking all up.  ;D

Author Craft / A Writer who can't Write
« on: January 16, 2008, 09:04:17 PM »
So here's my hangup, Ive been working on this novel idea off and on since High School, and while over the years Ive com up with an incredible amount of detail, I can never seem to sit down and record it, which inevitable leads to me loosing things to the annals of time (and for a while the alter of college drinking).  Im at best an average typist, and my handwriting is barely legible even to me.  Neither of which seem to keep up with the pace of a given creative brainstorm, so when I slow down I end up loosing the momentum.  Any suggestions?  Ive looked into dictation software in the past (though not recently), but they all take soo much training to even get 50% accuracy, and you throw in common enough sword and horse fantasy terms, and it all goes wonky.

Ive been post for a while on both the spoiler boards and the Book club, but I honestly cant figure out what the difference is anymore.  With the book club reading and such itself appearing to be over, what are the guidelines for posting on one vs the other?

Site Suggestions & Support / Changing your vote on a Poll
« on: January 06, 2008, 08:39:53 PM »
On a poll thread I created (White council traitor seen here http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,5564.0.html)  I had originally set it so that people could change their votes, and even did so myself this morning.  Then this afternoon I added an option to the list by request and but noticed that nobody can change their votes anymore.

Did I break it?

Is there any chance of a setting to allow us to view more than 20 topics at a time?  I understand the pain of having to load too much on a slow connection, but I'd love to be able to browse more without having to click over to second and third pages.
