Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Search capability ?

Specifically, I'm trying to capture the entire "A Map" thread in Alera spoilers so I can do a search on it for specific items.
Any idea how to do this?

You can go into the "A Map" thread and use the Search input box in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. It'll search through that specific thread using whatever parameters you input.

Tarnation.

I had two pages of unread posts. Page 1 would list fine, but Page 2 wouldn't come up. I was reading new posts okay for a while, but eventually I hit an unread post that didn't want to list properly, and now Page 1 won't come up either.

It seems like maybe there's a certain problem post(or maybe more than one) which is causing the error, rather than a forum-wide bug. Based on the "he who smelt it, dealt it" technique of investigation, I blame Shecky.

That refers only to the summoning of regular demons, though, not Outsiders. Outsiders are forbidden entirely, to everyone except the Blackstaff-- and possibly, I suppose, the Gatekeeper.

It may be that research into the nature of the Outsiders, where they come from and what they can do, would lead all but the most cautious of wizards to believe that Outsiders could be dealt with safely. Wizards might feel that with the proper precautions the dangers are minimal, and the risks would be well worth the possible gains. It may be that the ultimate price and danger of dealing with Outsiders only becomes apparent later, years down the road, and by then it's too late to stop them without engaging in a full-scale war.

This could easily be how the Circle got started, for that matter. Cowl or some other wizard looked into knowledge and power from beyond the Outer Gates, and they found it, along with what seemed to be perfectly controllable risks.

DF Books / Re: Did you discover the books because of the TV Show?

I had been hearing about Jim Butcher and the Dresden books for years, but until I watched the series I just hadn't happened to pick up any of the books.

Now, they're an addiction :) I've churned through the entire series in the last fw months, and just started White Knight.

Quoth my wife: "It's like those books are magnetic.  If you're within sight of one you MUST pick it up and read it"

I've been a scifi / fantas fan all my life - but honestly I haven't had this much fun just rabidly devouring a series in more years than I care to think about  ;D

Looking forward to more!

Yeah, I'm the same way. I picked up the first one in January, and I've re-read the series already. I haven't enjoyed the various details and mysteries of a book series this much since I was reading the Wheel of Time books by Robert Jordan, back when Lord of Chaos came out. And as much as I like the mysteries, I think the reason I like The Dresden Files so much is because I love the characters, and listening to Harry's thoughts as he goes through the story.

Site Suggestions & Support / Possible editing error with the forum
« on: September 25, 2007, 06:19:55 AM »
I could be wrong about this, because I haven't been able to duplicate the bug-- mostly because I have no means of doing so-- but I think there may be an error with posting and editing at the same time in the same thread. As in, someone posts a message, then begins to edit the message, then someone else starts a reply, finishes the reply, and then the first person finishes editing.

I say this because just now, Sameth posted, then I replied, and a couple of minutes later, my reply was gone but Sameth's original post had been edited to add a lot of stuff after the original text. So, the above is what I'm guessing happened.

If I'm wrong and it was something else, I apologize. Maybe I just misremembered and never actually clicked "Post" at all. I don't think so, but it could be.

Thanks for the boards and the forum in general, btw... I love discussing the various mysteries of TDF books with people here. :)

I watched the first episode before I'd ever heard of the books. I thought the show seemed interesting, so the next day I went out and bought Storm Front. By the time I was halfway through SF, I realized that the series rocked, and went back out and bought all of the other books that were out.

I decided to finish reading the books before watching any more of the show, to keep from spoiling anything for myself, in case the show had elements from the books in it. I recorded the episodes, though, and when I was done with the books, I watched most of the season over one weekend, one after another. At first, I didn't like the show so much, because it was so different from the books and left out a lot of things which I considered to be great about the series. But, by about halfway through the show, I started thinking of it in terms of itself, not as a reflection of the The Dresden Files books, and I started to like it a lot more. By the end of the season, I actually thought the show was very good, taken on its own.

I wish it had gotten another season. Especially because it might've helped make the long wait between books more bearable. Parallel universe Dresden Files or not, it was still Harry. :)

From the "four regional commanders in America" line, together with the comments about Harry and Ramirez being the two regional commanders in America, I'd been guessing that the other two regional commanders were in Canada, and by "in America", Luccio really meant "in North America."

Jim had no specific time frame in mind for Vignette, though I like to place it after SK, noting the reference to unicorns not being fun and prancy.

I guess there's not much point in debate over the subject, since there was no intended time period for it, but I think the Vignette could have happened after DM, too, from this quote of Bob's:

"Okay, fine. Suppose we throw intelligence to the winds and only print the truth. 'Vampire slayer, ghost remover, faerie fighter, werewolf exterminator, police consultant, foe of the footsoldiers of Hell.'"

The "footsoldiers of Hell" phrase might be a reference to the Denarians. Of course, given their usual temperament and dastardly deeds, I suppose the term could be applied to most of Harry's enemies, but it seems to apply most readily to the Bad Penny Brigade.
