DF Spoilers / Re: Mouse & the Castle
« on: April 12, 2022, 05:23:51 PM »
Yes, Maggie's getting an absolutely scandalous prom dress of only the finest materials. Complete "Stacy's Mom" situation for the poor girl, though.

We've never quite gathered how Mouse cheats. Does he absorb ambient magic from Dresden? Does he draw on Dresden's sense of ownership of Chicago? Does he leech and store power from the Nevernever everytime Dresden opens a Way?

In a sense the Id,is his own entity, lets not forget back in Fool Moon I think it was when we first meet him, he is a very different Harry from the one we know.  I wouldn't be shocked if that is the Harry we meet in Mirror Mirror..

I have an entire theory that DuMorne did not fail in creating a thrall out of Harry, and to cover the corrupted "real" Harry he created a fake overlay personality- which has now been in the driver's seat longer than the "real" Harry and is its own being, and the main character of the Dresden files.

idHarry would then be "original" Harry. Similar, interested in the survival of thrall-Harry, but not quite the same being. It would explain why Harry hasn't backslid as a warlock- the backlash affected real Harry, not constructed Harry. It'd go into a lot of the philosophy of mind fun stuff, and put a whole different spin on Uriel's interactions with Harry.

I'm not firmly attached to it, but Butcher has left himself room to go that way. It possibly, in a less interesting way, explains some of his incorruptibility by beings like Lasciel- he's actually bound in terms of some of the choices he *can* make- and it would explain Bob's explanation about how a fine thrall could function theoretically forever without knowing it's a thrall.

DF Spoilers / Re: At what age does Talent usually manifest?
« on: April 12, 2022, 05:09:33 PM »
"Mostly" is one of those words that, in alt-universe fiction, means "could easily go either way."
 ;)
I repeat my prior caveat:In-universe likelihood/genetics/etc is irrelevant; authorial intent is what decides this!

We're told enough to know that there are two factors involved.

1) Genetic predisposition. It's inheritable.
2) There seems to be a "turn-on" element from exposure to magical energy in the womb/early childhood. This was explained with reference to Molly and Charity- Charity was still packing juju when she was pregnant with Molly, but not with Daniel, so Molly's switch was flipped to "on."

This also would explain the "Salic law" tendency of magic inheritance. If mama's got the juju, the fetus is automatically exposed. If Dad does; he needs to be using magic around his pregnant honey to shave the offspring's odds- say moving her around via the Nevernever, which the paranoid Eb might have done.

Maggie was conceived by Susan and Harry after Mama had a bunch of magic tattoos. Will she manifest? Don't know, but with the crowds Susan ran in with the Fellowship and the War it's possible. Potential's likely to be there from Dresden.

EDIT: What's fascinating is that Butcher has drawn a strong correlation between size and power, at least with the Fae. We've discussed before in other threads, I think Maggie Sr spent most of her pregnancy in fast or slow time Nevernever zones to guarantee Harry would be starborn. Her own height aside, I've long wondered if Harry's near-outlier height is an expression of Butcher's Fae correlation.

DF Spoilers / Re: Black Court Missing Elders (Newbie first post)
« on: April 01, 2022, 03:42:24 PM »
But I don't think anything was said about him being a member of the Black Council.. Again lots of talk about, but no substance as to whether or not it really exists.. Oh I think there is some kind of connection, or at least perhaps some of the factions have was looks like the same aims but that doesn't mean they are part of a group called the Black Council.

I believe you're confusing Black Council with Black Court. Black Court's a vampire court, Black Council is Harry's name for the alliance of individuals from several nations working to undermine everything. The post you quote was about Black Court, not Black Council.

The Jade Court are classic Chinese hopping vampires, breath or chi stealers meaning the Jampires have more in common with the Whampires (aside from both being fans of British rock bands).

Reds and Blacks both require blood and the life force suspended in that to feed, rather than take the life force direct.

My theory is Drakul is wearing a Starborn body, Kemmler was after something similar but was too early for Harry’s generation, Justin in this theory was waiting for Kemmler to return, Harry was to be the new body for Kemmler, and with a Starborn body Kemmler had the last piece of the jigsaw for a successful Darkhallow (which is why it nearly killed Cowl), it explains why Kemmler never did the Darkhallow when he could have used the power to crush the White Council, the only Starborn body around from previous generations was already occupied by Drakul, and I doubt even Kemmler fancied taking him on.

It may be that there is a physical limitation on a mortal absorbing too much power unless it is through a construct like a Mantle, or mother Winters Walking Stick, or they are a Starborn.

Agree on Drakul being in a Starborn body- I'd propose that the body unexpectedly put a bounds on his ability to manifest, like it was itself a miniature living Outer Gate, and that's why he's stuck.

Agree that Harry was intended as a Kemmler vessel, or a vessel for Justin doing a Corpsetaker. Talent needs to be developed to not wither, so Harry needed training regardless.

Disagree on Kemmler not having done a Darkhallow. I rather think he must have done at least a preliminary test-of-concept version, but it was limited for some reason- perhaps because he wasn't starborn. May have limited him to a certain "volume" of ghost consumption- the prize, I think, is to do one at Demonreach, which he would well understand.

Also disagree on available Starborn. I think Rashid is one. Mab and Titania might be. Hell, maybe that's part of the White King's secret and why he'll do deals with Outsiders. But Harry, with a powerful wizard talent and affinity for the more destructive aspects of it, is a prize of a starborn host.

I'm in agreement with Mira about Harry's father mattering, even if it's in a literary sense- in a "in the end what matters is that Harry is more Malcolm's son than Margaret's" story-sense. Everything sees his mother in everything he does- her power, her secrets, her talents, even her height- but what's inside isn't corrupt in the same way. Harry isn't a saint, but even the Temptress among the Fallen couldn't corrupt him. He's. . .excessively centered in himself. He's capable of doing evil he agrees to, and only when he agrees to it.

That's what I see, anyway, and I find it an interesting character to be the hero of the story. He's not necessarily nice, but he's . .independent. It's his choices. He's centered in that. Doesn't accept coercion.

DF Spoilers / Re: Star Born (direct quotes compilation)
« on: March 10, 2022, 10:28:20 PM »
Well if we play out the idea that Margaret intended Harry to be a star born, the logic says she must have known a) what star born are (otherwise why bother), b) when the star born conjunction was going to occur and where the light would shine on Earth, c) any sort of preparation/sanctification of Harry that may have been required prior to his birth.

Now we have to figure out where she got this information (information that seems very carefully guarded). Margaret was no slouch and she travelled far and wide; but she was also at odds with the White Council for much of her life (particularly around the time of Harry's birth). It doesn't rule them out but you then have to go the extra step and say it was a conspiracy between them and her.

The more simple explanation is she got the information in her travels (in particular with Lord Raith and his big library that has made Lara turn from a manipulative politician to an expansionist drawing all available power to her, the same library that convinced Lord Raith to become a player in this cycle). But she then did the unexpected and ran away and used the information for her own goals, and not the goals of her previous allies.

In any case, I don't believe the circumstances of Harry's conception played into this. If you're suggesting Malcolm was selected on purpose (particularly for his rare personal characteristics let alone any possible supernatural ones) how does that account for the other 50,000 at the time? You wouldn't suggest that there are 50,000 Malcolms for such purposes. And then you look at a character like Listen. Were his parents specifically selected? While I don't doubt the importance of bloodlines I am not so sure that necessary for the creation of star borns. I think the main components are being in the Light of the conjunction (i.e. the time and place) and any specific sanctification/preparation of Margaret and/or Harry. What other components are there really?
But why go to the effort? Margaret's bloodline was already strong enough (and has Ebenezar in it before her, and potentially dates back to the original Merlin). She didn't need to shop around as she had all the power she needed in her bloodline to produce such a strong wizard.

I don't think that there is some grand conspiracy with choosing Malcolm. I think she chose Malcolm for the simplest yet most mysterious reason of all: love.

This is how she had the strength to escape Lord Raith. She fell in love. So Raith no longer held power over her. And she fled to protect her new love, and perhaps her soon-to-be-born offspring.

I am very confused about the Erlking being linked to Edinburgh. The second Merlin won it off a Sidhe lord - the Erlking is a (the) goblin lord (and stronger than almost any Sidhe bar the Queen and possibly Lea and Eldest Gruff).

Think you crossed some arguments.

Maggie was part of a plot to engineer a dangerous, uber-strong wizard starborn. Rather than walk away, she threw a wrench in the process by having such a child with Malcolm- breeding aside, Malcolm also raised Harry. Eb said Malcolm has a soul like few he'd ever seen- after meeting Michael. Also would neatly explain why Harry adopted Michael as a pseudofather so quickly.

The goblins are Wyldfae. Ir's why the Erlking is a Summer King, like Kringle is winter. Erlking is lord of the bloodsport that is the hunt in summer, as Kringle embodies the warmth and family coming together to survive side of Winter.

Wyldfae means Fae. Summer King implies Sidhe. Herne the Hunter is geographically close. And his Nevernever digs were similar tunnels, as I recall.

In White Night Lash Harry;

Perhaps I'm wrong, but that sounds way more complicated that finding the right place at the
right time to give birth.  It takes planning, time of conception and matter of conception is very much a part of that.

Magic is generally inherited from the female line and exposure to talent prebirth.

I rather think the deal with Maggie Sr is that she mastered the Ways young enough as a woman to guarantee a wizard-level offspring born whenever she picked via time manipulation via the Ways. The trick is a starborn with metaphysical capabilities. Since the Fomor favored the talented for their modification, I suspect Listens happens to have Paranet level talent. Maggie was still fertile when she attained that level of Ways mastery, and as a female wizard could guarantee foetal exposure to high level magical energy.

But Harry has a big, big talent. And not by chance. I think Maggie hacked the process, and her amulet represents the ability to create an army of starborn wizards next time around. Therefore, it's dangerous and the Merlin will want it smashed.

I think Thomas was a test run, with Valentine's picked for sentimental reasons. He might represent a 5 month objective 9 month subjective pregnancy kind of situation, as could Harry. Or vice versa- 9 month subjective 5 year objective.

Also, @Yuillegan, I think Edinborough represents the Erlking's old digs- his contribution to Odin's pet project.

Typed on mobile, sorry

I personally have no issue with the initial number of Starborn, they only matter if they have metaphysical talent. Listens probably falls in this bracket, Paranet level.

Chicago, though, is explained in series. Chicago is a travel nexus. It is a railroad nexus, an air nexus, a sea travel nexus, a river network nexus.

Chicago was elevated in the 19th century to alliw for sewers and water control. Magically, therefore, Chicago exists suspended between land, sea, and air.

Further, I believe the background series has implied politics that Harry missed. Namely, the Red Court and White Court were engaged un trying to sieze Chicago. It's why the council left Harry alone- he setup residence in a foreign territory.

Victor Sells, iirc, worked for SilverCo- Papa Raith's creature. Three way battle for Chicago's vice between Raith, Bianca (Ariana's creature) and Marcone (no-one's creature, but appears to be a White Council creature viz Harry). In short, it's a magic Wild West border town. Which implies territorial proximity- or being on another border.

Chicago is therefore a city of boundaries and pathways, perhaps more than anywhere than Constantinople.

So the series happens there

It's never been stated where he was born...but considering Chicago is the centre of everything I would say it's more likely than not.

If you think about it in a Doylist sense working backwards, where else makes sense? Where else would you put 40,000 beings that is also significant to the series?

That rules out locations important only to Harry (e.g. Hog's Hollow or whatever). Harry's early years are very vague - we don't know where Margaret was when Harry was born (although likely this is kept secret for a reason). However, given that Lord Raith the White King was in Chicago with Margaret Le Fay (at one of the White Court's main locations at the Raith Chateau) - he even has a picture of her there, and her other son spent most (if not all his life in Chicago) - it seems more likely than not.

But I am open to other suggestions.

I did a back of envelope sonewhere else on here.

It's a window of time. When Harry was born- circa 1970- that number represents something like a half hour or hour (I misremember) of births.

My 2 cents- Demonreach only cares if its Warden is capable- magical chops and has the will- to bind dark gods.

Demonreach wants to be used- this was clear from when they interred Thomas.

Hold on there Tex.  Where did we learn Kemmler is the former Warden of Demonreach?

A WoJ last year.

He wasn't the last-there were two in between.

Kemmler was trying to get back to the island for much of the 19th century

I rather think:

"Recent events have shown that the mysterious new Wyldfae power known only as 'the Za Lord', who has somehow acquired dominion and loyalty amongst the Little Folk and has been flagged as a potential problem due to the wealth of information they have access to, is none other than Harry Dresden. During the Battle of Chicago, he tipped his hand and revealed that not only does he command thousands if not millions of them, but he can direct them in actions completely contrary to their known nature- commanding their attention, respect, and giving them orders they will faithfully carry out for hours."

1. Who cut out Ethniu's eye?
Obviously would have to be something big, both literally and figuratively. It's our assumption that the Black Council are the ones who gave her the Eye, as it fits their M.O.

That being said, it could have been another group. Say, Tessa and Imariel and her more chaotic Denarians? They all love chaos and destruction. But also, what about the Outsiders themselves?

I could definitely see He Who Walks Behind having a role. He's been established as more than a demon, more than a hitman; he's a manipulator and a peer of Uriel. So he could definitely tear out the eye of a Goddess. He also could be large enough to leave such big scars. We have to remember that anything that could scar Titanic Bronze on a Titan is a serious being.

Another candidate is Lucifer himself. But why he would get that involved is harder to work out.

2. Is Ebenezar a Denarian? Now, it could just be about the amount of power in the staff that Ebenezar was putting into it. But. I seem to remember Harry's own runes on his staff used to glow the same color when using magic while he possessed a Coin. Considering how angry and barely controlled Ebenezar is...I could see a Denarian egging him along. One of the big things with Denarians is the reveal, the sucker punch. It would be quite the surprise to learn he is a Denarian.

The question is why? He already is a wizard, so he has power. He already wields the Blackstaff, so he already has a dark deal. Why get another? And when would he have done it? Why isn't he aiding the other Denarians?

Hard to say on any accounts. Perhaps, like Mab, he needs all the power he can get to do what he feels he has to. Cowl felt much the same. Simon even expressed sentiments of frustration on the limitations of being a wizard in the Paranet Papers. When he would have done it is impossible to tell, but I would guess it would have been before the Blackstaff was his (in this hypothetical scenario). And perhaps we just don't see him aid the other Denarians because it's all in the background. Or perhaps he is a rebel (along with his Fallen) and doesn't care to help the others. Or perhaps...he is leading the other Nemesis-infected beings, and he and his Fallen are in the same boat.

I assumed it was Ethniu herself that pried out her own eye.

Perhaps the Blackstaff plants something like a Shadow itself, and that was what Eb was revealing during the battle?

Corrected thanks. Can't believe I forgot about that.Ah true I had him at the Crusades.
Agreed. :)
Actually she denied that, jokingly referring to him as saying. 'He does like us to call him "Daddy"

See the problem? Different theories from the same information.
Nice. What's the theory?

Possible to cross the pole north-south after the last ice age. Ice in Norway/Russia, ice in Canada.

River is explicit that they were fleeing the new warrior culture Odin started. That dates it post Ice Age. Could be done by magic furry beings. Food and the duration of the journey on the ice sheet is your major problem in terms of possibility.

Regarding Gard: In the Helot short story, she reveals herself as a Scion of the Geat. In the main series, she stipulates that "we"- the Valkyries- aren't all Odin's daughters, but he likes being called Daddy.

Possibly an error, possible some of them are Odin's daughters.

Maeve's/Sarissa's father was an Austrian composer in the 17th-18th centuries, per WOJ. Mab's got a thing for musicians, seems.

Rashid slew the Mad Arab, pre 800AD.

He's older, objective time.

I believe you can roughly sketch out handovers of the Outer Gate guardianship. 0AD- Greek Pantheon to Norse Pantheon. 1000 AD, Norse Pantheon to up-powered Fae. 1000 BC- I suspect Dragons to the Greeks. Or perhaps Titans to the Greeks.

Unless it's matter of the 666 year cycle.

Also, Gard referred to her father as "the Geat"- Beowulf. She's 600-700AD for birth. Thought: Beowulf as a Starborn?

River- they crossed the ice to flee Beowulf and his people seeking vengeance for Grendel. Post 600AD.
