DF Spoilers / Re: Mab is Nfected question
« on: May 02, 2019, 01:31:57 PM »
That's the obvious explanation, but I don't think it was spelled out in the book. If I recall, Man simply said by the time she learned of Maeve's condition it was too late.

DF Spoilers / Re: Mac's Possible Identity

Hmm, another point on the Arthur theory. Mac shows magical healing ability. The scabbard of Excalibur has magical healing abilities. In DV, the sword's magic is actually linked to the nail. If the scabbard's magic is also linked to a component (like a jewel), Mac could be carrying that around and using that to heal.

Thought of one.

Ancient Mai reveals herself to be a staunch ally of Harry because of his connection to Mouse. She will volunteer to go on a negotiation mission as the WC rep with Harry. When all hell breaks loose she will reveal some secrets about Mouse with a promise to explain everything later. Naturally, she will die before having the opportunity.

Another - Harry persuades Mortimer Butters to attend the Peace Talks and gets him status as a representative of minor talents / the Paranet. Butters doing that makes more sense, but isn't much of a bomb.

Three, the FBI shows up.

DF Spoilers / Re: Another Cowl Theory
« on: May 01, 2019, 09:20:10 PM »
I think this also shows that Cowl probably wouldn't be Simon, who as a member of the Senior Council wouldn't have difficulty with Harry in a duel.  Morgan seemed to think it impossible for Harry to beat Justin in a duel meaning he probably had a deal of respect for Justin.  That says Justin was probably a heavy hitter himself.  That could be a strike against Justin being Cowl even though Harry did apparently beat him in the past.  Justin if he survived would have another 10 - 15 years to get stronger, and more experienced as well making him tougher to deal with.

There is another possibility.  Cowl was sick, dying, or weakened (recovering from injuries) during the duel with Harry.  Either that or he telegraphed his shots at Harry to scare Harry with dangerous spells while at the same time winding up so Harry could avoid being killed by them.  Cowl "swaying" after using a spell does make me wonder about his power level though

Another thought I just had. Justin or Simon could be body-snatchers like Corpsetaker. If they were forced to take a body of limited means they could still be attempting to return to their full power.

If Mab was able to "cure" Lea of Nemesis infection, why wouldn't Mother Winter be able to "cure" Mab? Between Mab and Mother Winter, the process shouldn't take overly long (at least not as long as it did for Lea), so... what? I mean, if she were infected, I doubt it happened any later than Small Favor, when we see her using a malk as a mouthpiece for the first time.

Good thought, but there could be a few explanations.

1. Leah was absent from DM, BR and DB and not done healing as of PG. That's a period of 4 years. Even if Mother Winter could heal Mab in half the time (and I don't see any reason why it would take less time), 2 years is a very long time to not have Winter.

2. It's possible that in order to cure Leah, Mab had to take the Nemfection into herself, which is how Mab became Nemfected. It's possible that the role of the Queen makes it appropriate for Mab to take that burden on herself (in exchange for getting Harry's obligation) while the role of Mother Winter makes it inappropriate for her to take the burden from Mab. It would also explain why Mab couldn't cure Maeve (she couldn't take the Nemfection when she was already infected).

DF Spoilers / Re: Exposure to Magic?
« on: May 01, 2019, 02:54:10 PM »
I don't think the above implied JB is a bad author at all. Storytelling is more important than world building, so an author needs to be able to break the rules. Assume an author builds a world that is based on a particular ruleset (like Salic law) but needs an exception for three different characters. Unfortunately, the author can't think of an exception that would govern each case and using three different exceptions would undermine the ruleset and raise questions as to why characters "A, who fits exception 1," "B and C, who fit exception 2," and "D, who fits exception 3" still follow the general rule. In such a situation, it is better for the author to just handwave the exception and focus on the story.

That's kind of what we have here. In general, magic is passed down in the DV in a certain way, but if JB needs a certain character to have magic despite not following the traditional rule, he doesn't need to dedicate time to craft a narrowly-tailored exception and explain the exception in text. It's perfectly acceptable to just ignore the fact the character doesn't follow the rule and let the readers come up with their own explanations as to why the particular character is special.

I don't agree that it added nothing to the story at all: it was a theory that clearly originated from Maeve, and demonstrates an action that Maeve is taking to undermine Mab. Its place in the story isn't a random worry: it's deliberate malfeasance on the part of an enemy.

Plausible v. necessary. It is a plausible story line for Maeve to accuse Mab and for Harry to investigate, but it wasn't necessary as a plot device to drive Harry's actions in CD. It may just be filler story for entertainment purposes, but it may also have been misdirection.

We also have WoJ that Mab considers the defense of the Outer Gates to be the most important thing in her life. I believe Jim says that Mab would sacrifice herself, every human & Fae if she thought it would win her the war against the Outsiders. In Cold Days, she kills her daughter because she stands in the way of that goal.

If Mab knew she were Nfected, she would remove herself immediately, whether or not Molly is fit to be Queen. I suppose it’s possible that she doesn’t know, but as others have pointed out, what would be the point of that? It’s been played out

I disagree 100%. If Mab knew she were Nfected, she would remove herself when the risk that Nemesis would be able to corrupt her exceeds the risk that Molly's inexperience would lead to a serious blunder. Mab probably knows to the day, hour, minute and second how long she can withstand Nemesis and she won't act to remove herself earlier than necessary.

DF Spoilers / Re: Magic suppressing items
« on: April 26, 2019, 03:15:56 AM »
I think in theory Harry could construct such a device but it wouldn't be without risks.  Harry's wizard senses have alerted him to danger that he didn't know was there.  He would also be vulnerable to magical attacks while it was active.  I'm not sure Harry would feel comfortable using such a device.

The Larry Fowler show seems proof enough of that. Harry could easily have talked to Fowler and explained he needed to draw a magic circle to avoid destroying the camera equipment. Fowler would have eaten that up. But Harry chose to rely on active suppression.

Reasonable, of course, is in the eye of the beholder. I would say it's reaching.

To me the whole plot of Cold Days was 'is Mab mad? Or is Maeve?' (a question which had been teased since at least Proven Guilty) and the answer was clearly Maeve, and by implication clearly not Mab (since she drove the attempt to take out Maeve, and her plotting before that point was all about revenge for being sidelined by Nemesis and its allies from Summer Knight on).
And Skin Game was a now-restored Winter striking back for slights offered during its weakened phase when second-in-command-Lea, Knight and Lady were all compromised.

To me the question of whether Mab is mad in Cold Days was a side show circus that added nothing to the story. There has been nothing since PG that leads any credence to the theory Mab was mad and in CD it was made apparent before Mab even asked Harry to kill Maeve that Maeve was the villian of the story. On its face it was used as a reason for Harry to go talk to the other Fae and Rashid, but it would have made sense for him to do that anyway just investigating Maeve and what was going on with Demonreach. Thus, the only real value that particular plot had for JB was to definitively show Mab is not infected - which doesn't make sense given how little evidence there is that she was infected, unless, of course, she is actually infected and the purpose of the plotline was to deceive the reader into believing she isn't.

I’m still not getting how we’ve gotten to Mab is fighting an Nfection - . . .

I am yet to see any evidence that Mab is Nfected or fighting off an Nfection personally.

It's classic misdirection. Suggest Mab might be Nfected then present evidence that it is actually other people who are Nfected (specifically the people accusing Mab), so that the readers will be surprised when they learn Mab actually was Nfected.

Mab isn't being controlled by Nemesis or working with Nemesis, but the text is consistent with her being tainted by Nemesis in a similar way that Harry was tainted when he touched Lasciel's coin but refused to pick it up and buried it instead.

<heh>
But nah.

Bob's not a perv.  HARRY's Bob is a perv.

Evil Bob?  Not a perv.  Scary as fuck, but not a perv.

Butters' Bob?  Ummm.  I don't think we know enough to be sure... but I don't think we see any signs of perviness... which just is NOT pervy Bob, especially with Andi around!

You've just highlighted the power of names. All Bob's are Harry's Bob. Evil Bob isn't actually a Bob at all, it's just a spirit of intellect. Butters' Bob, however, is a Bob, which means he will share some of Harry's Bob's original personality. Butters' Bob might not be as pervy and/or might have more restraint, but he's still going to be a perv.

She can't. We have a WoJ that we're going to find out what Margaret's deal with Lea was when Jim wants Lea and Harry to duke it out, and that it's going to happen in one of the later books (post-Peace Talks).

Oh.

. . .

Ha, I got it! Lea dies in Peace Talks and the duel takes place in the time travel book.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could Justin have been betrayed?
« on: April 12, 2019, 06:44:04 PM »
I can see your point, but I disagree. To me, Nemesis infection seems a lot more like Assimilation than enthrallment. It's like the Borg. Or maybe a Denarian-type thing, wherein the Fallen overrides the bearer's consciousness and seizes the reins. The infection itself seems to have consciousness (at least, Harry spoke to it through Sith), so maybe it's closer to a Denarian Shadow, only significantly more juiced up; it seems to be able to rewrite the core of a person, to the point that they can break their own rules (Maeve can lie, Sith disobeys Mab's will, etc.) and outright possess them when the chips are down, so I don't see how that could be fixed by turning that person into a thrall. Aside from all of that, mortal magic slides right off Outsiders, so I doubt that a mortal enthralling another mortal would have any noticeable effect on someone who's infected—the only time we've seen mortal magic hit an Outsider is performed by Harry. And it took Mab years to cleanse Lea, and she wasn't able to help Maeve at all; it's doubtful Justin could've done much of anything.

The fact that Nemesis can change an entity's mind is precisely why enthrallment, which requires changing a person's mind, would be a logical counter. And it might not specifically be enthrallment, it could be something that looks like enthrallment or something that requires enthrallment before it can be safely performed. Regardless of the specifics of the method, it makes sense that some kind of mind-magic that skirts the lines of the laws would be a solution to the mind-invasion by Nemesis. Since it requires violation of the laws, it literally can't be performed by Mab and wouldn't be discovered by the White Council. Also, Outsider resistance is a non-issue because you aren't hitting Nemesis with magic, you are using magic on the victim in a way that makes the host unsuitable.

Thirded.  I'm not sure who said it first here, but narratively, it really is time for the wise old mentor to die.

Here's hoping that he and Thomas not only learn about each other, but have some sort of reconciliation, before the end.

I agree, Eb Leanansidhe is going to go bye-bye in Peace Talks.

30
And if you read Changes closely, Leah has suppressed the infection, but isn't free of it.  Make of that what you will.

Oh? Would you mind elaborating?

I'm of the opinion that Mab is out of Nemesis's weight class.  I'm not saying she's more powerful, just that she's powerful enough to stop it's influence.

I agree to the extent. Again, it is like Harry/Lasciel. Harry isn't more powerful than Lasciel, but he had the ability to resist her at first contact and bury the coin. But Lasciel left a shadow and started speaking to his subconscious, eventually leading to the use of Hellfire and active attempts at subversion. Eventually Harry won the battle, resisted temptation and transformed the shadow into Lash, who sacrificed herself for him. But Mab doesn't have free will like Harry, so it might be impossible for her to win a long-term war with an entity that is trying to change her nature. She can and is winning battle after battle, but eventually, she'll start to lose ground and will fall.
