DFRPG / Other Ideas for the Catch, your thoughts?
« on: August 09, 2012, 10:41:39 PM »
I'm helping someone put a game together and one of our players wants his character to have a Catch that is mental in nature, rather than physical. He's building a character who I guess fuels his physical abilities from being possessed by a powerful spirit and that if he behaves in a way opposite of the spirit (its a Spirit of Justice), it somehow satisfies the Catch. In theory I don't have an issue with this, in fact it sounds kind of interesting. The only concern both the GM and I had is that it stays balanced obviously. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on this? The obvious solution is to have the Catch somehow affect his mental stress or maybe use a vampire sheet and use the hunger stress track.

Thanks, everyone. You've given us some ideas, one in particular that we are very excited about.

DFRPG / Buffy or Slayer-like Character?
« on: July 31, 2012, 10:52:18 PM »
Hey there, I'm working on putting new a game together in the next few weeks with a fellow Dresden fan and one of the players wants to play as a Slayer-like character. As in he pretty much wants a character with Inhuman Strength and Speed but not one who is a vampire or a scion (ie: subject to the hunger/thirst or mortality vs. supernatural Choice). I get where he's coming from, he's read a few of the books and instead of being a magical player (like Harry) he wants to be physical threat to the vamps, faeries, and baddies we go up against while still remaining a "free agent".

The problem is that he agreed that it should stay true to the source material and we haven't been able to come up with an idea that works the way we'd like. Power in the Dresdenverse is never free. Has anyone created a similar character or have any ideas?

Any votes on where Jim should have his cameo(s)? My first vote would be for the mail carrier from Storm Front. He's the very first character we ever see in the series.

Harry Dresden: Zachary Quinto
Murphy: No actress completely satisfies me but I think candidates include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Summer Glau or Brea Grant.
Michael Carpenter: Ewan McGreggor (Yes, I know he isn't very tall. I picked him anyway)
Thomas Raith: Brandon Routh?
Kincaid: Bradley Cooper
Morgan: Liam Neisen
Butters: David Krumholtz
Voice of Bob: Jason Lee
Leah: Famke Jansen or Christine Hendricks
Will: Josh Hutcherson
Martin: Anthony Rapp
Susan: Erica Cerra

I have to admit, I am intrigued by the idea of Chistopher Meloni playing Marcone.

Just realized that I picture Donald Morgan as Liam Neisen when I read the books.

DFRPG / What Template would you use for an exiled Fomor?
« on: June 06, 2012, 11:25:43 PM »
Been wanting to write up a PC who is an exiled Prince of the Fomor but it doesn't seem to fit very well with the established templates. What would you guys use? Emissary of Power? (even though he's exiled?) Focused Practitioner?

DFRPG / Re: My First Character, what do you think?
« on: June 05, 2012, 11:32:14 PM »
Wait a second. Powers have to be directly related to the High Concept? I'm not sure that makes sense to me. Just because someone isn't a Sorcerer or a Wizard they can't take Thaumaturgy (or other magic related powers)? I don't get that. Thomas is a White Court Vampire and he's certainly capable of basic Thaumaturgy (which implies he'd be capable and learning and refining some magical abilities).

Maybe I should explain what I'm trying to do. The idea is this character began studying magic at a very young age, though he doesn't have the power of a full wizard. At some point he confronts some Red Court Vampires, who infect him. Someone (or something) powerful intervenes and morphs him into something similar but different. Where a vampire draws power from the demon that sets up shop in their body, he draws his power from a spirit of light with limitations similar to a half-vampire. He's later trained by the government and employed as a U.S. Marshall (in charge of keeping the supernatural peace of his town).

I thought that the idea was useable. Was I wrong?

DFRPG / Just Got Your Story and I Have Some Questions
« on: June 04, 2012, 03:56:11 AM »
Hey there, I just got the Dresden Files RPG: Your Story for my birthday. I don't have prior RPG gaming experience and I was hoping someone could shed some light on a few questions I had after reading (or point me in the direction of further reading). In general most of it seems straight forward but there are some things I'm not clear on.

- Is there a limit or some kind of restriction to the number of aspects a character can have? I know you get five of them with the creation process through the background and guest stars but can you ad some to flesh out a character more. Do you have to earn more through gameplay or is it something thats up to the gamemaster?

-How exactly do your characters grow stronger and more experienced? Are they rewarded more powers/stunts/whatever after completing an adventure?

- Can anyone point me to a good resource for high concept examples?

who wouldnt love a tim burtony
       dresden files?
Tim Burton does not work well with other people's material. He's a talented director but I don't want him within a mile of The Dresden Files.

My only real issues with these are that
  A) Brandon Routh is too big to be Thomas,
  B) Ewan McGregor is too small to be Michael
Ha. And just a little while ago people shook their fingers at me when I wanted a tall guy to play Dresden.

My two cents:

Harry Dresden - Zachary Quinto

Karrin Murphy - Brea Grant, Sarah Michelle Gellar or maybe Summer Glau?

Thomas Raith - Brandon Routh?

Leahnansidhe - Famke Jansen, Christine Hendricks?

Michael Carpenter - Ewan McGreggor

John Marcone - Liam Neissan?

Susan Rodriegeze - Erica Cerra

Billy Borden - Josh Hutcherson?

Kincaid - Bradley Cooper

Nicodemus - Patrick Stewart

Reminds me of years ago when I was discussing who should play who in the Harry Potter movies.

I'm not convinced. To be honest, I think your grasping at straws.
