The Bar / Re: Another Weird for the Weird folk
« on: March 22, 2020, 12:30:45 AM »
I teach biology, computer science, and robotics, and I'm usually as hands on as I can be, so it's a shift trying to do it online. I've been experimenting with video options, too, so I can still talk to my classes. I've tried some video white boards and slide presentations, and Google Meet.

I've been using Google Classroom to post assignments, and trying to find virtual labs.

I didn't realize the forum was still around until recently.

Just checking in to see how everyone's doing. Our schools all closed so I have to teach online until May 1st.

Site Suggestions & Support / Phone vs. Computer Access
« on: January 15, 2017, 10:37:48 PM »
So, if I try to access the forum from my phone, it comes up with a message saying my account is banned. I get the same message even opening up the forum on "Guest" status. But, clearly, I have access to the forum using my computer. (Both my phone and computer use Chrome).

It's not really an issue, it's just kind of strange. Has anyone else had that happen? Of course, now that I've alerted the stewardess, the gremlin is probably no longer on the wing...

Steampunk societies often portray alternative history and a post-apocalyptic future, and tend to maintain stylistic and cultural elements of the historical period it's drawn from.

at least in the Victorian times.

I think that says it right there.  Ignoring or sugar-coating history doesn't change how it happened and re-telling or re-imagining a historical event or viewpoint doesn't mean the work is condoning it, or suggesting that it should continue today.

Well, it is never explicitly said in the book, as it is not said that Albion is England, but the echoes of the Spanish Armada are clear for me and there are also many Spanish names (Like "Ciervo").

I think Albion is an old name for the British Isles.

And I have Spanish Armada stuck in my head now. I couldn't find a better version of it.

Duct tape it to your head and use it like a GoPro.

I can't imagine there being any problems, so I'm pretty sure I'll be there.

I think I'm going to try and come to this if I don't end up filthy/totally covered in herbicide from work.

I would prefer if Jim would arrive via motor vehicle or aircraft.  I would find it rather disconcerting if Jim just appeared.  Is there a ritual involved in that, or do you just say his name three times?

"When can we get the next book."

Every time you ask Jim Butcher about the next Dresden Files book, George R. R. Martin kills a Stark.

So... Taking bets on how long into the Q&A  someone asks,  "Why does Dresden have a hat on the cover of the books?"  Don't be that guy!

But bonus points if you ask that and then follow it up with "Why are YOU wearing a hat?  Why are you all wearing hats?!  Dear God, THE HATS!!"
