Author Craft / Re: Fanfiction: Is It Real Writing?
« on: January 02, 2013, 05:59:49 AM »
YES. Yes it is.

It's an art that literally goes back hundreds and hundreds of years if not thousands. (Noted authors were part of a Sherlock Holmes writing group, etc.)

It is just as valid as 'real' fiction. For the majority of us, we put ALOT of effort into what we write. As someone who's written over 240 fics, I can definitely say I've put alot of effort in (I've written a few series--I have alot of fandoms I like--and many one shots and the like which can get lengthy.)

It's another way to see things, try things. Although when reading fic you know most of the characters involved, you are building a world from the ground up. And as someone who values characterisation most, you have to work extra hard to keep them IC.

For me fic also gets me inspired to work on my own stories. I'm currently working on my first book. I haven't forgotten fandom though, been in it too long and I have so many of them.

Now that I think about it...the whole idea of mantles of power. It's got me thinking of an old series by Piers Anthony. The Incarnations of Immortality. The whole setup is similar - science/magic world, and mortals assume various Offices of power depending on the beliefs mortals have, the more believe, the more Power is vested in the Office. Wonder if I'm on to anything. Didn't Jim make some joke during his last online discussion thing that at least he's not having all his heroes related to one another - I think Anthony did that with the last book in that series. Nox?

Ah, I'm probably nuts.

I've read that series! Also funny coincidence you bring it up because I was re reading info on it to refresh my memory of it. It gives an interesting interpretation of Satan.

Would it be possible for the White Court to take over a Denarian?

That is one of the best, and well thought out, theories I've heard yet! *claps* Kudos!

Or Cowl/Simon was necromancered back by Kumori (after Archangel) and that explains his voice and his scars.

Also very possible, though I've always assumed that the scars were from what happened at Archangel.

Welp, considering what we know about Nemesis now, I'd say there's a huge possibility that Cowl is infected. In fact, the whole discovery just makes it more likely that Cowl is Simon; explains how someone so trusted would go turn coat and nuke Archangel the way he did. Have we ever gotten a WoJ on what kind of magic Simon uses? (summon: Serack!)

This quote from Dead Beat makes a real strong argument for Simon = Cowl:

Quote
"Right," I said. "You're the correct madman for the job."
Cowl was silent for a long moment in the rain. Drops fell off the end of my pistol in his gloved hand. Then he said, his voice pensive, "I do not perceive myself to be mad. But if I were truly mad, would I be able to tell?"

And I think that Cowl took a power-up/mantle from the Fomor--would explain the voice.

he's like, the embodiment of hercules. the legendary journeys. also had a movie based on it. and cameo's in xena warrior princess

Actually the Hercules movies came first IIRC; they were kind of testing the waters and saw it did well so they made a series.

any direct evidence against rashid being cowl? not supposed actual? the gatekeeper is busy alot which would explain why cowl is hardly ever around, if rashid is cowl then i say maggie is kimori. just a guess. is there any prof directly against cowl rashid though? being in two places at once, that sorta thing? (rashid could probably manage that of course)

Height discrepancies for one. Rashid is taller than Harry after all and Cowl isn't described as being taller than Harry or even the same height IIRC.

CD Book Club / Re: Cold Days Book Club - Chapters 1-15 **MAJOR SPOILERS**
« on: November 28, 2012, 10:59:36 PM »
Chapter 5 was probably one of my favorite chapters in the series ever. Seeing Eldest Gruff, the Erlking and everyone at the party was freaking awesome.

I have only one thing to say: SANTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Manga (you wouldn't believe how many I have...),
DC & Marvel (BIG majority being Batman but I have some Spider-Man and stuff as well)
I also like stuff like Y: The Last Man.

Though, again, the majority of stuff I have is manga. I like alot of different genres; shonen, seinen, shojo, josei and others. I'm a weird fangirl. :P

Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Where would YOU like Jim to appear?

Indianapolis, Indiana or Louisville, Kentucky. Both are close to me and I've been dying to meet Jim in person.

Questions:
1) When Harry Soulgazed Molly he saw that in one of her possible futures she was no longer human with yellow eyes. Is there somebody in the Dresden Universe that has the same yellow eyes? How can you become such a creature (inhuman with yellow eyes)

Oh no, Molly possessed by the Yellow Eyed Basta**! (let's see who gets the reference. :P)

But in all seriousness, I can't remember anything with yellow eyes. Rampires had dark ones didn't they?

DF Books / Re: Did you discover the books because of the TV Show?
« on: November 17, 2012, 07:18:34 AM »
I got into the books because of a friend--who I am forever grateful to--who kept talking about the series and said I should try it. I did, and fell in love. I heard about the tv show after that.

And I recently got another close friend to try out the series and she loves it. She's waiting as eagerly as I am for Cold Days.

I guess we're just not good enough, Serack. ;D

I'll do the TC re-read tonight, happy?

Turn Coat is great but it's hard for me to get through, because of

I still haven't completely forgiven Jim for that. =P

We don't know, but I doubt it. I don't think the sidhe has individual souls.

They cannot be corrupted because they do not have souls--Harry already said in Summer Knight that he could look Mab in the eyes and not worry about triggering a Soulgaze because she didn't have a soul.
