Site Suggestions & Support / Forum post links opening new windows
« on: January 10, 2011, 02:53:40 PM »
This isn't terribly significant, and I think I already know the answer to my question (no) but is there a code I can use to allow links within a post to go directly to the linked url within the same window rather than by opening a new window?

I would like to adjust the table of contents in the "WoJ Compilation" sticky so that it works a little more like a wiki article table of contents rather than opening new windows.

I suspect the answer is no because of how similar links work in the WoJ forum.

Although... while writing this I visited the topic Priss moved to the WoJ forum yesterday at my behest by using the link in the locked "MOVED" topic and the locked topic sent me directly there within the window, but her link to the post of interest behaved like all my links do (opened a new window).  Kinda gives me a little hope...

Site Suggestions & Support / Indirect WoJ
« on: January 09, 2011, 09:18:40 PM »
This might not be worth any action, but it makes me a little twitchy.

Through the efforts of other posters it was brought to my attention that Priscillie had posted some very informative information WRT the vampire courts that she had heard Jim say at the ConDFW in this post:

http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,15927.msg743165.html#msg743165

I included it in the "WoJ compilation sticky" but it is currently the ONLY WoJ in the entire compilation that does not have a link to its source.  The source is currently available but I did not include it in the compilation because in about 4 months the link will go dead when the board purges the post as an inactive topic.

If the mods are willing to preserve the topic as a source of WoJ I recommend it be transferred to the WoJ forum.

Edit: Extra thoughts...
In transferring, a mod might wish to add the code

Site Suggestions & Support / WRT: MOVED: Display Case Contenders
« on: December 24, 2010, 05:26:51 PM »
Eeek, were you intending for us to no longer be able to nominate stuff for the display case in that thread? As a typical (ish) poster I don't have privlages to write in the Bar child boards (I.E. where the display case contenders thread went)

Site Suggestions & Support / Avatar discussion revisited
« on: December 16, 2010, 10:34:45 PM »
The forum auto-suggested that I start a new topic rather than continuing the old one.

Actually, we prefer for folks to use the standard 100x100 icon size, with 125x125 being the upper limit.

I saw Shecky say earlier today that 100x100 was necessary, and I remembered the above post which I have quoted to people before.  Now it's officially in the forum rules:

Forum Rules and Precepts. Please read.

Avatars:
--Personalized avatars must avoid touchy topics.
--Please keep avatars to a size  not to exceed 100 x 100 pixels.

Of course Blaze's avatar (a great one that IMO is of a great size but I have a rather high resolution so I might not be the best judge) beside that rule is 106×159.

You've (the mod crew) written it down now, but I suggest you massage the wording a little...

Site Suggestions & Support / Stars over avatar...
« on: November 23, 2010, 05:05:49 PM »
What exactly is the significance of the # of stars/their color?  I just noticed that Myyrdn's stars are green in the forums he has mod priv's in but yellow in the others.

Site Suggestions & Support / Jim Interview dictation cluster project
« on: November 18, 2010, 06:25:20 PM »
Forum members are doing some great work taking dictations of audio and video Jim interviews in this thread and I suggest that a mod snatch the individual posts and split them into their own topics on the WoJ forum.  I know that Myyrdn doesn't have mod privileges in the Spoilers section, but they had to be posted where people were alowed to make their own posts.

Here is a direct link to the first dictation already done.

For future posts in this topic that I want to recomend for transfer to the WoJ section, would using the "Report to moderator" button be appropriate?

Jim Butcher has a lot of interaction with his fans, including on these boards, and a huge amount of it has been archived in the Word of Jim (WoJ) section of these boards.  If you haven't visited them, I highly recommend you do, and in the context of Dresden Files Spoilers, I highly recommend you visit the "DF WoJ compilation" which goes through a lot of trouble to list everything that Jim Butcher has said about the Dresden Files.

There are lots of recordings of Jim Butcher interviews, Q&A sessions, and panels that can only be found in audio or video formats.  These are fun to watch/listen to (after all don't they say that 80% of all communication is non verbal or something like that?), but several people have voiced that they would enjoy text versions better, and others have expressed appreciation for transcriptions that have already been done because of hearing impairment or other reasons that make listening to them impractical.

There are a LOT of videos and audio clips though, and although I have done some of them, I have found out that a lot of our forum contributors are much more efficient at it.  So if you wish to contribute to the effort, please post your work here, and I will put it in the WoJ forum as well as link to it in the interview list.  Any help is appreciated by myself as well as everyone else that loves to read Word of Jim sources.

It is usually not necessary to point out things Jim Butcher has said on the Forums that are not in the WoJ area.  Those are generally kept where they originate so that discussion can be continued, and I frequently check Jim's recent posts for them using his profile.

One more suggestion
Jim is a lot of fun to listen to, but when you transcribe what he says verbatum it sometimes comes out like this excerpt from the 2011 Marscon Q&A:

Quote
Um, and it…almost all of them come from stuff like that. Um, some characters are…I only needed for a minute, some characters that I only needed for a minute were actually too cool and I had to keep them.

But

Quote
Almost all of them come from stuff like that.  Some characters that I only needed for a minute were actually too cool and I had to keep them.

Is much more easy to read, yet still stays true to what he was saying.

But doing editing like that might be one of the reasons why it takes me a bit longer to do these transcriptions compared to some other people.  Any work is appreciated.

Site Suggestions & Support / Topic Decay question
« on: August 25, 2010, 12:29:38 PM »
I've seen it floating around, and I have no problem with, the fact that topics that haven't been active for 30 days get auto locked to prevent topic necromancy (good thing imo).  I have also seen mod's mention something about such locked topics being deleted 90 days later but I am not sure if that trait is specific to certian "boards" like the more social ones.

The reason why I am concerned about this, is that in the DF spoilers board, the ultimate interview compilation stickie has replies with links to additional in board topics that are our only record of certain JB interviews/Q&A sessons, and they have not been replied to since May 1st and it would be a crying shame if these were to "decay" and be deleted so I was hoping someone would clarify this policy for me in hopes that my concerns will be aleviated.

The one (link in sticky to a locked thread) that brought this to my attention is:

Site Suggestions & Support / My profile (Why is my email addy showing)
« on: August 10, 2010, 02:22:43 AM »
I don't like that my email address seems to be showing on my profile (at least when I look at it).  I want to get it off of there but I can't find any setting that allows me to do that.  Anyone able to help me?

Edit:  I just logged out and looked at my profile, and under email address, it says "hidden" is this the case for all users, or just people lurking without logging in?
