DFRPG / Making a Magical Bunker
« on: September 14, 2011, 04:31:22 AM »
I've been thinking about what kinds of defenses you could setup or aspects in place to tag if you were making a magical fortress. Some ideas I've had:

1. Build over a leyline with defensive energy to power your wards.
2. Have the grounds consecrated.
3. Lay down tons of aspects during construction to be used when casting your wards.
---The bricks are all etched with protective sigils.
---The building itself is built over a specially crafted magical circle.
---The foundation is poured over a rods (etched with magical symbols) of each noble metal.
---The walls are painted with a (non-radioactive) version of ghost dust.
---Furniture arranged in Feng Shue.
4. Clear away undesirable stuff on the Nevernever side.
5. Bind nasty stuff to the Nevernever side for watchdogs.

So what types of things would you do if you were trying to make a magical fortress? Like Archangel?

DFRPG / Making Pacts for Magic
« on: September 02, 2011, 12:09:32 PM »
I've had an idea rolling around for a while:

A character who, by making clever deals or by sheer con artistry, makes deals for slivers or chunks of other people's/creature's magic. This of course hinges on the idea that magic can be a commodity that can be traded, but we have some precedence for this (Charity's old coven leader, Harry making his first deal with Lea, even if it did turn out badly, etcetera).

How would you model this type of magical benefit?

DFRPG / A Chat Session Log
« on: March 07, 2011, 06:56:19 AM »
For your Viewing Pleasure:
Hannah & Adam, Sam

(00:41:38) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The drug itself seems to be made from unknown plant matter, and any detailed examination by the police turns up next to nothing. They cant find anything strange about it at all, according to Sam's contact.
(00:42:37) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Hannah of course is interested in finding the source of this new drug and putting a stop to it. A lot of her friends are artistic types and she's heard that her friends are getting into it. It makes her worried.
(00:43:10) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Sam's been doing a story on it, and the recent deaths supposedly caused by the nefarious drug.
(00:44:32) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Sams cellphone begins to ring.
(00:44:47) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((Caller ID?))
(00:45:01) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (Yep, it's Hannah)
(00:45:48) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Hey, Angelface, how's tricks?" Sam answered in his best noir detective impression.
(00:46:53) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬ snorts, "Oh, same as always I suppose. How's Connor?"
(00:48:18) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "He called earlier this week, doing fine. He said we'd be the first to know if he saw anything with orange eyes." I supplied as I leaned back in my chair, "What's going on?"
(00:50:08) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬ sighs, "Thats good, at least. I'm calling you about that new drug "Inspiration', I saw your blog post on it and figured you might be interested in finding out more about it. I am too."
(00:52:51) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: His toned shifted to something more business like,"Any idea where it's coming from?" I had posted the blog about a half a day ago on one of my anonymous blogging handles hoping for a tip off to where deals for the drug were going down.
(00:55:51) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Sam can hear Hannah moving around a bit, the drone of rock music can be heard before the sound of a door closing comes over the line "Yeah, I got a lead on it at least. Im at the 'Smashdown' (a Rock & Roll bar) and I just heard somebody talking about it. They mentioned a hookup down in the french quarter. If you come and pick me up we can go check it out."
(00:57:14) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "In a heartbeat." Sam replied and turned off his phone before grabbing the keys to his jeep.
(01:01:01) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: It takes you about twenty minutes to get to the Bar and you can see Hannah waiting outside with Adam. Shes in a leather jacket, black sweater with a leather skirt and torn fishnet stockings. She jogs to the side of the jeep, "Come on Adam, lets go."
(01:01:35) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She pulls on the handle of the car only to find it locked, she rolls her eyes at you through the window.
(01:02:15) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Sam laughs and unlocks the door, "Nice skirt."Sam adds.
(01:05:27) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She flashes Sam a smile, "So nice of you to notice," Adam gets in the back without comment, "So I heard that this guy is somewhere around the corner of St. Ann Street and Dauphine Street. Theres a Bar near there and he usually hang out in the area."
(01:06:50) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Does 'he' have a name?" I ask as I start driving again.
(01:07:34) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She nods and rolls her eyes, "Nate the 'Great', can you believe it?"
(01:07:45) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: As she says "great" she makes air quotations.
(01:13:13) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Bet he's overcompensating for something."Sam shrugged as he got stopped by a red light.
(01:15:03) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She snorts, "Probably, anyway, I asked some of my friend about him, and they say hes a badass of some sort. Likes to play dirty, wave guns around a bit, and they say he's hinky."
(01:17:49) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Definitely overcompensating." Sam said as the light turned green. "This friend of yours, they on the Muse drug?" Sam didn't know if she knew about the deaths that might have been related to Inspiration.
(01:19:12) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Her face becomes drawn and she looks out the window, "Yeah, I think so. She's been acting kinda strange. Jittery you know."
(01:21:45) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "After we get done here. We should go handcuff her to her bathtub." Normally that sort of sentence might have a bit of swagger or suggestion to it, but it was noticeably missing from his voice. "There is a good chance this drug is related to some of those overdoses you might have been hearing about."
(01:24:06) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She nods, fingers tracing a pattern over the window, "Yeah, that might be for the best."
(01:25:39) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Soon enough you hit the corner of St. Anne and Dauphine. Its around eleven at night and bring close to a bar parking is scarse, but you manage to find a spot.
(01:27:41) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "How do you want to play this?"
(01:28:56) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She shrugs, "I say we just take a look around."
(01:32:07) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Roll Alertness
(01:32:12) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets -1+1+-1+-1=-2.
(01:32:12) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: gonna roll investigation
(01:32:15) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets 0+1+-1+1=1.
(01:32:18) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: okay then
(01:32:22) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+-1+-1=-4.
(01:32:27) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ...
(01:32:32) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: ( :P )
(01:32:40) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: I notice jack crap
(01:33:30) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: -1, 0 if smell counts
(01:33:38) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The noise of the bar overrides almost everything else, people coming and going. From the clientele you can tell that the Bar is a real dive.
(01:34:00) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: gonna roll normal investigation
(01:34:06) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+1+1=3.
(01:34:10) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: haha
(01:34:19) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (smell?)
(01:34:25) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +8 normal
(01:34:36) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +9 with Senses
(01:34:42) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +10 if smell related
(01:34:51) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: :D
(01:35:20) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Sam can smell something like burnt almonds and mint, the telltale smell of 'Inspiration'.
(01:36:21) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "I can smell it." Sam said as he glanced out the rolled down window. "We're in the right place."
(01:37:08) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬ lets out a relieved sigh, "Good, then this isn't a waste of time, you follow your nose, and I'll follow you."
(01:37:15) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She gets out of the car, followed by Adam.
(01:37:52) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((rolls up windows and locks car))
(01:38:23) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Hold onto my keys and wallet." He tossed them to you after pulling out some cash if he needed it.
(01:38:52) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (if you go Coyote it'll be harder to do social combat)
(01:38:56) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: ( :P )
(01:39:08) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((that's for just in case =p ))
(01:39:23) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "If I have to change, I hate losing my stuff."
(01:40:05) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Hannah arches an eyebrow, "Ok. Sure,"she pulls her backpack around and puts in in the outer pocket, zipping it up.
(01:40:07) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((Heh, bet half his income goes to buying new clothes))
(01:41:15) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: I sniff the air again, catching the scent again."This way."
(01:41:18) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 1+1+1+1=4.
(01:41:25) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Scent Tracking
(01:41:28) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +11
(01:41:50) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: O:-D
(01:43:20) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((I love tracker/sensor characters))
(01:43:29) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: You easily follow the trail, it leads halfway down the block before turning to the left. There you find an open gate leading into a small courtyard for a hotel.
(01:44:13) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Only one level of rooms, and maybe seven or eight in total.
(01:44:29) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The trail leads to room number 7.
(01:44:43) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: wow I'm cool
(01:45:16) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Should we knock?" I whisper to Hannah.
(01:45:38) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She shrugs, "Never hurts to be polite I suppose."
(01:46:38) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Sam turns to the door and knocks out the pattern of 'shave and a hair cut' on the door.
(01:48:19) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Heavy footsteps can be heard coming towards the door, which opens up a crack, the security chain stretching taught, "Who the f@#$'s there?"
(01:48:35) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: k
(01:51:03) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "You Nate the 'Great'?" I ask and even do hand gestures.
(01:51:10) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+-1+-1=-4.
(01:51:15) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: oh crap
(01:51:32) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Rapport 0 for First Impression
(01:54:05) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The man's eyes, green if you are wondering, slide over you and towards Hannah..
(01:54:08) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets 0+-1+-1+0=-2.
(01:54:31) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: and then to Adam.
(01:54:34) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets 1+1+1+-1=2.
(01:55:02) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Who seems to meet with the thugs approval.
(01:55:12) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (heh, Adam made the best first impression)
(01:56:05) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The thug nods, "Who's askin?"
(01:57:04) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Just looking for some Inspiration." Sam says.
(01:57:08) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 0+-1+-1+-1=-3.
(01:57:13) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: dear crap
(01:57:18) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets 1+1+-1+-1=0.
(01:57:20) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +1 Rapport
(01:57:33) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: He narrows his eyes, "Why don't you read a book."
(01:58:10) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Hannah moves forward, "C'mon, man, we've got cash."
(01:58:12) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: why'd he get for defense?
(01:58:13) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets 0+1+0+0=1.
(01:58:22) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets -1+0+1+-1=-1.
(01:58:58) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (you were rolling Deceit :P )
(01:59:22) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((well we ARE looking for some.))
(01:59:35) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (eh, either way, he rolled a 2)
(01:59:42) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((And it's not an outright lie, which would mean Deceit would modify anyway =p))
(02:00:35) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The man sighs, and nods, "Alright, just a sec."
(02:01:54) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The door closes for a moment and then opens up, this time all the way. The hotel is obviously cheaper than you thought it was, two burly biker tuffs sit on the bed weighing out baggies of brown and green leaves, stacking them in piles, and counting out money.
(02:04:50) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Dude, were do yo get all this?" I asked, my repp
(02:04:53) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: brb
(02:05:49) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Where do yo get all this?" I asked, my reporter skills kicking in.
(02:05:55) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 0+1+-1+-1=-1.
(02:06:23) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets -1+0+-1+1=-1.
(02:06:27) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (Total?)
(02:06:33) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Chit Chat +3, invoke for +5
(02:06:55) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((my keyboard is being pissy))
(02:07:23) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: He smiles, "Oh, you know, Family connections. Nepotism is good for something eh? How much did you want?"
(02:08:33) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (roll alertness)
(02:08:35) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+-1+-1=-1.
(02:08:37) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets 0+1+-1+1=1.
(02:09:26) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+1+-1=-2.
(02:12:14) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +0 regular, +1 Senses, +2 if Smell
(02:12:29) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: I had my tree mixed up
(02:13:00) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (the man smells of trees and springtime, the other two smell somewhat like B.O. and Raw meat)
(02:13:19) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: rolling Lore
(02:13:24) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 1+1+0+0=2.
(02:13:27) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +3
(02:13:57) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (As Alertness or for info?)
(02:14:11) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: gut was info
(02:14:17) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: but lets say alertness
(02:14:36) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: cause if that pings then might info might be easier
(02:15:23) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Because if I sense something then my info roll might be easier. **
(02:15:29) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: You feel a sort of hitch in your thoughts as you look at him, as if something were interposed between what your eyes see and what your mind sees. A bit of effort causes the tingle to go away, revealing the truth of the man before you.
(02:16:22) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: He looks almost the same save for a few key differences, skin is smoother, paler, higher cheekbones, greener eyes.
(02:16:53) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (He pegs your radar as a Fey)
(02:17:13) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((Does he notice that I notice?))
(02:17:28) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (no)
(02:17:48) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: rolling Resources
(02:17:52) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+1+1=3.
(02:18:03) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (wow)
(02:18:20) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: hrh
(02:18:23) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: heh
(02:18:39) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (total?)
(02:18:54) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "How much can a dozen dead presidents get us?" ((That is my total))
(02:19:04) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((Which is 5K =p))
(02:20:49) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: He smiles, spreads his hands, "Ahh, that'll get you quite a bit, boys, package up a couple bricks for our new friends here. I've got a phone call to make."
(02:21:18) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: I noticed the man for what he really was, probably one of the Fae. It seemed he didn't noticed that I had realized this fact, so I decided to play this out.
(02:21:29) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Rolling Investigation to listen in on his call
(02:21:35) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+0+1=-1.
(02:21:49) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +4 normal +5 is Sense help
(02:21:53) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The two men begin to package bricks into ziplocks and then into paper bags.
(02:22:05) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (you can hear it)
(02:24:50) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: "Hey, Annah, its me, look, I just had a big spender come in, I'll need another order. I'm sold out. No, no I don't know who he is, but he just dropped five large. Heh, yeah, I bet, but it's ok if he sells it all, just the network growing. Uh, let me think, yeah, ok, I can do that. Where? The warehouse? Yeah, Ok, How about an hour? Mkay, Bye."
(02:26:09) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: The two thugs bundle it up and hand it to Sam in a double bagged Walmart sack. The fey comes out of the bathroom and smiles, "Alright, everything good jimmy?"
The thug who handed it to Sam smiles, "Yup, we be good boss."
(02:26:38) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "So if we want more in the future, you got a number I can reach you at?" I asked as they prepared the drugs.
(02:26:42) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+0+1=2.
(02:26:47) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: +6 Rapport
(02:26:53) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets 1+1+-1+0=1.
(02:27:50) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: He Smiles and nods, "Yeah, yeah I got a cell," he jots down a number on a subway napkin and hands it to Sam."Just let me know when you need more."
(02:29:34) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Shiny." I grinned and handed one of the bags to Adam before leaning into Hannah putting my arm around her waist. "Told you I knew where to get the good stuff. See yu later Nate."
(02:29:41) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: ((Cue leaving))
(02:29:55) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (Yep)
(02:30:25) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (That was a 20 refresh fight you just avoided with Social Skills)
(02:30:40) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Go us =p
(02:31:04) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: But now they'll be at the warehouse too when we follow them
(02:31:30) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: Nate closes the door behind the three after they leave.
(02:32:12) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: After walking a distance away I whisper to Hannah, "He's a faerie. Goons smelled off too."
(02:32:47) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She nods, "I saw through the glamour too, I just couldn't tell you without tipping him off. What did the other's smell like?"
(02:34:46) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "B.O. and raw meat." I said remembering it vividly. "He called someone named Annah."
(02:35:06) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Says they're going to meet at a warehouse in an hour."
(02:35:07) ‪ChatBot‬: (GM/Hannah&Adam) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+1+-1=-2.
(02:35:15) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: (+3 Lore)
(02:35:55) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "We cleaned him out, so at least he won't be dealing to anyone else tonight,"
(02:36:00) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: She shrugs, "I don't know any Annah, but the Raw meat smell? Looking like humans. If I had to guess I'd say ghouls, no telling though."
(02:36:24) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: "Do ghouls and faeries usually get along?"
(02:37:02) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 0+-1+-1+-1=-3.
(02:37:09) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Lore suckage
(02:38:12) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: "Anything nastier than that and I would've felt it I think," she snorts, "Ghouls are thugs, goons. If you pay em well, yeah, they'll work with anybody."
(02:39:21) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: hey brain wave
(02:39:30) ‪(Sam_Drake)‬: Investigation Declaration
(02:39:34) ‪ChatBot‬: (Sam_Drake) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+-1+0=0.
(02:39:45) ‪(GM/Hannah&Adam)‬: With an arched eyebrow Hannah says,"Alright, now that we aren't being observed I think you take your arm back."

DFRPG / The Fate Point Barter
« on: February 28, 2011, 01:55:55 PM »
So, I've been toying with the idea that you might be able to pull off more with fate points than what is presented in the books. People with a little bit of experience realize how powerful an invoke for effect can be, I was wondering if anybody had offered their players (or their gms) extra effects with high fate point costs.
For example:

(Note, the wording on these is similar to stunts but they aren't, just extra options to spend fate points on)

Overflow Action: If you have at least 3 overflow you may spend a fate point to gain an additional action (including roll) during your exchange, you may use it for another attack.

Extra Action: You may spend 3 fate points in order to take a second action during your exchange.

Extra Evocation: You may spend a fate point to cast an evocation with shifts of power no greater than your conviction without taking mental stress.

How balanced are these ideas? Does anybody have any more to add to the list?

DFRPG / Lash-esque Character
« on: February 23, 2011, 10:09:19 PM »
So I've been in love with Lash ever since she popped up in the novels, and naturally I've been wondering how to handle such a character in the RPG. So I've been working on some powers that would help representing a Lash-esque character that might be playable. Here is what I've got so far.

Willing Possession. You may possess somebody, but only if they agree to it. Once they agree they cannot force you out of their body.
Assist Vessel. When someone is possessed by you, they gain the full effect of any powers or stunts you have. What's more, they may use your skills instead of their own.
Co-Pilot [-1]. The person possessed by you gains the effects of the Demonic Co-Pilot power with you as the demon.
Exert Control [-2]. The Co-Pilot upgrade is a prerequisite to this one. This variant is seen most commonly among demons or bound spiritual entities. With this upgrade you may fully possess your host once you've taken him out with the mental strain from your Co-Pilot upgrade. The attack your host suffers from the Co-Pilot upgrade inflicts +2 stress on successful hits. Once you've taken possession, you may control your victim completely, without any easy telltales of mind control, and gain access to all of their physical abilities and many of their mental ones. Once someone has a reason to be suspicious, you must use your Deceit to defend against discovery.

DFRPG / Counterspelling
« on: February 23, 2011, 12:17:23 PM »
I was looking at counterspelling and decided that its not quite up to snuff, I mean Im sure its useful but it doesn't seem worth specializing in, sort of how transportation and worldwalking feels like a bad investment every time I read through it.

Figuring that maybe some stunt love is what is needed to get it on track, I worked these up. What do you guys think? Any other ideas on how to make counterspelling useful?

Wizarding Duelist. Whenever you Counterspell a spell you may sacrifice your next turn in order to immediately return fire with an Evocation of your own.

Efficient Counterspeller. You are extremely adept at counterspelling magical effects. Whenever you attempt to counter a spell you may treat your attack on the spell as having +2 shifts of power.

DFRPG / Magic with Hunger Track
« on: January 28, 2011, 06:01:41 AM »
Id like to get some thoughts on this power:

Hunger Magic [-1]
Description: You can channel the life force you've stolen to sate your hunger in order to bolster your spells.
Musts: Feeding Dependency, Some sort of Spellcasting
Skills Affected: None
Effects:
Reach Into the Well. You may invoke one spellcasting related aspect for the cost of two hunger stress without paying a fate point.
Deeper Reserves. Since you've learned to use stolen life force for other purposes, you've also had to expand your capacity to store it. You gain one mild hunger consequence.

(20:19:15) (Fitzroy)‬: My veils are go down after attacking, so yeah
(20:19:26) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: only thing I can think of
(20:19:55) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: OK guys
(20:20:17) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Scene is underground passage
(20:20:54) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: 3 zones long, one zone is the exit itself, 4 zones is the underground chamber of the gateway.
(20:21:15) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: aspects? like is this a factory?
(20:21:20) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: mansion?
(20:21:26) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: subway?
(20:22:13) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Aspects are "Stalagmites and Stalactites", "Dark and Damp" and "Gate to the Beyond"
(20:22:35) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: It is a cave forced upon reality by the tear in the Veil
(20:22:40) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: And I assume the Outsider someone crossed over to mortal plane (unless we're in the NeverNever)
(20:22:49) ‪(Rocky)‬: big enough for Rocky or am I cramped?
(20:22:49) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: somehow*
(20:23:24) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: The cave is a zone wide and a zone tall so Rocky fits easily.
(20:23:33) ‪(Rocky)‬: cool
(20:23:48) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: how is the lighting?
(20:23:49) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Can we post our stress boxes?

(20:24:10) ‪(Alice)‬: I think shes going in with her spirit form active
(20:24:16) ‪(Alice)‬: and Fitz is probably veiling us

(20:24:25) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Fate Points: 1 Physical OOOO armor 3, Social OOOO Mental OOOO, extra mild consequence
(20:24:38) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Is that Elena?

(20:25:55) ‪(Alice)‬: Alice: P OOOO(OO) Armor: 1 S OOOO M OOOO, FP: 1
(20:26:01) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: I should take No Pain or something...
(20:26:03) ‪(Alice)‬: forgot the Toughness boxes
(20:26:05) ‪(Rocky)‬: Only compared to me. I are teh crazyborken
(20:26:19) ‪(Rocky)‬: defensively, anyway
(20:26:43) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: OK guys. Initiative please?
(20:26:55) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Great
(20:27:05) ‪(Rocky)‬: good (3)
(20:27:09) ‪(Alice)‬: Great (+4)
(20:27:20) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: 4dF +3
(20:27:31) ‪ChatBot‬: (Elena/GM) rolls 4dF and gets 1+-1+1+0=1.
(20:27:46) ‪(Alice)‬: you dont roll
(20:27:51) ‪(Alice)‬: unless there is a tie
(20:27:55) ‪(Alice)‬: which, now I see there is
(20:28:02) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Alice and Fitz need to
(20:28:04) ‪ChatBot‬: (Rocky) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+1+0=2.
(20:28:04) ‪(Alice)‬: I suppose me and mal need to roll to see which one of us goes first
(20:28:10) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets 0+0+0+0=0.
(20:28:12) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+1+1=3.
(20:28:17) ‪(Alice)‬: Booyah Fitz
(20:28:18) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Alice wins
(20:28:22) ‪(Rocky)‬: how many tentacled horrors are there?
(20:28:33) ‪(Alice)‬: Alice, Fitz, Rocky, Elena
(20:28:34) ‪(Rocky)‬: and what are *their* initiatives?
(20:28:40) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Rocky and Elena are tied I think
(20:28:45) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: nvm
(20:29:19) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Teh need to roll again Rocky and Elena
(20:29:23) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: against
(20:29:38) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: (is glancing at the sheet)
(20:29:56) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Tentacled Horrors are initiative 1, there are (currently) 4 of them and are occupying the middle zone in the passage
(20:29:59) ‪(Rocky)‬: I just rolled for mine - rolled 2
(20:30:19) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: We are only in the entrance.
(20:30:20) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: four?
(20:30:31) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: For now
(20:30:31) ‪(Alice)‬: so its Alice's Go then
(20:30:42) ‪(Rocky)‬: they aren't The Outsider, they're The Outsider's Minions.
(20:30:49) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Yeah
(20:31:00) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Veils are +7
(20:31:14) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Wait
(20:31:25) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Gotta roll perception for the Horrors
(20:31:53) ‪ChatBot‬: (Elena/GM) rolls 4dF and gets 0+1+0+0=1.
(20:32:06) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: They get a 2 so we have surprise
(20:32:08) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: ha, I can beat that with a -4
(20:32:34) ‪(Alice)‬: Mkay
(20:32:43) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+0+-1=0.
(20:33:09) ‪(Alice)‬: +7 Weapon:6 on the nearest target
(20:33:26) ‪ChatBot‬: (Elena/GM) rolls 4dF and gets 1+1+0+-1=1.
(20:33:46) ‪(Rocky)‬: (off-topic, did you guys see my suggestion for the resolution of Elena's background?)
(20:33:52) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: (Alice's veil would drop)
(20:34:10) ‪(Alice)‬: Alice raises her hand and pulls it down in a reverse fist pump motion, pulling a stalactite down as well as her fist.
(20:34:12) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: You deal 9 stress on one Horror.
(20:34:29) ‪(Alice)‬: (I assumed that alice's eil would drop once you did something so I went ahead and attacked instead of laying down aspects)
(20:34:31) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: The horror is pierced neatly in the middle
(20:34:44) ‪(Alice)‬: (Any Consequences dealt as a Result?)
(20:34:50) ‪(Rocky)‬: Does it seem to care? :-P
(20:35:01) ‪(Alice)‬: (or is it dead? or pissy?)
(20:35:04) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: nope
(20:35:08) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Neither
(20:35:13) ‪(Rocky)‬: Heh
(20:35:20) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: (Horrors are smaller than I thought)
(20:35:37) ‪(Rocky)‬: (size matters not, padawan)
(20:35:49) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: fitz's turn
(20:36:02) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets 0+0+1+-1=0.
(20:36:31) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: +6 Bows to lay down "In My Sights" on the horror ALice hurt
(20:36:48) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: automatic sucess
(20:37:01) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: then I be done
(20:37:24) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: (still veiled, didn't attack)
(20:37:27) ‪(Rocky)‬: Breaking off the biggest stalagmite I can find and hefting it to throw (if I can't throw it in the same round)
(20:37:37) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: you can
(20:37:44) ‪(Rocky)‬: woot.
(20:43:25) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: OK, let's say you pick up a weapon 4 stalagmite. Who's next?
(20:43:27) ‪(Alice)‬: (Never argue during the game, do it after the game is over, arguing in game slows down the proceedings)
(20:43:45) ‪(Rocky)‬: cool. Elena's turn
(20:44:26) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: OK, want the Horrors gone quicky or want to draw this out?
(20:44:47) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: They aren't the main course
(20:45:11) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: I've got about 2 hours I'm willing to spare
(20:45:21) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: killing 4 vamps took 3
(20:45:24) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: so...
(20:45:38) ‪(Alice)‬: (Well, do it like you would if you were elena)
(20:45:51) ‪(Alice)‬: (so if she is likely to throw out a big flashy spell, then do that, if not, then dont)
(20:47:26) ‪(Rocky)‬: (go flashy)
(20:47:32) ‪(Fitzroy)‬ waits
(20:48:46) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Elena moves her hands and the darkness seems to boil with tentacles that manifest out of thin air. They strike out and grasp the four other tentacled things
(20:48:54) ‪ChatBot‬: (Elena/GM) rolls 4dF and gets -1+1+1+1=2.
(20:49:19) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Zone attack?
(20:50:03) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: OK, that is a strength 11 zone grapple for 4 rounds.
(20:50:24) ‪(Alice)‬: (Alice then?)
(20:50:26) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Fate Points: 1 Physical OOOO armor 3, Social OOOO Mental OOXO, extra mild consequence
(20:50:34) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Wait
(20:51:06) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: (goes to pee)
(20:51:08) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: The horrors have no FP and can't escape.
(20:51:55) ‪(Alice)‬: (Ok, so now Alice?)
(20:52:09) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: So you guys do 4 rounds of attacks at once - no need to post separate rounds
(20:52:26) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: alright then
(20:52:28) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: If they can't escape anyway.
(20:52:53) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets 0+0+-1+-1=-2.
(20:53:01) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: tagging aiming for reroll
(20:53:06) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+-1+-1=-4.
(20:53:10) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: crap
(20:53:22) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets -1+1+0+-1=-1.
(20:53:22) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: +2 to damaged horror
(20:53:24) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets 1+-1+0+1=1.
(20:53:25) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets -1+1+-1+1=0.
(20:53:26) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets -1+0+1+-1=-1.
(20:53:33) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: with WEapon:2
(20:53:34) ‪(Rocky)‬: (would you say that having high Might would modify my Athletics for the purposes of throwing a massive rock?
(20:53:48) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: You use Weapons to throw
(20:53:59) ‪(Rocky)‬: replace skill, repeat question?
(20:54:08) ‪(Rocky)‬: (heh... I'm speshul)
(20:54:09) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+0+1=2.
(20:54:15) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: new aiming
(20:54:18) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: +8
(20:54:24) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+-1+1=-2.
(20:54:36) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: new attack, +6 with aiming
(20:54:45) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+-1+0=-3.
(20:54:49) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Guys wait.
(20:54:52) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: aiming +3
(20:55:34) ‪(Alice)‬: Alice lays down aspects over the course of three exchanges and then tags them all in one massive attack for a total of +18 to Hit for Weapon 6, Im going to sacrifice Two to hit and Two weapon rating to make it zone wide for a total of +16 Weapon: 4.
(20:55:36) ‪(Rocky)‬: waiting...
(20:55:41) ‪(Alice)‬: (6 aspects)
(20:55:43) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: +2 Attack with Weapon:2; +6 attack with Weapon:2; +3 Aiming... all against damaged Tentacle
(20:55:54) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: brb
(20:56:34) ‪(Rocky)‬: why are we waiting?>
(20:57:18) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: assuming so we can keep up with damage dealt
(20:57:28) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: The massive attack along with a few shots from Fitzroy's bow take out the held horrors.
(20:57:31) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Alice probably killed Beast 1
(20:57:44) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: (that's enough rolls to kill them all)
(20:57:44) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: ...all of them?
(20:57:57) ‪(Rocky)‬: Uh... Rocky threw a couple rocks in there, too. (didn't roll, 'cuz you said to wait)
(20:58:45) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: They only had mediocre defense cause they were grappled and they only got 10 stress and armor 3. The big attack killed the wounded one outright and just the arrows were enough for the rest.
(20:58:46) ‪(Alice)‬: (if you want I can delay my attack till the big bad shows up, I'll have 8 aspects to tag when he shows up then.)
(20:59:34) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Shall we move on?
(20:59:34) ‪(Rocky)‬: May I make a maneuver during that time, invoking the "stalagmites and stalagtites" aspect to create the "rubble" aspect I can use later for more ammo?
(20:59:53) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Yeah, you can make more ammo.
(21:00:11) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: That might more be an attack on the enviroment
(21:00:14) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: /shrug
(21:00:17) ‪(Alice)‬: (just do a might declaration, you wont even need to invoke, and save the fate point)
(21:00:28) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: or that
(21:00:33) ‪(Rocky)‬: Yeah, I'll go with that. Might declaration.
(21:00:43) ‪ChatBot‬: (Rocky) rolls 4dF and gets 0+1+1+1=3.
(21:00:57) ‪(Rocky)‬: 14. I think that succeeds...
(21:01:02) ‪(Alice)‬: (thats certainly high enough since we're talking about breaking things)
(21:01:32) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: To be fair
(21:01:48) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: You wouldn't add the breaking bonues
(21:02:02) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: I don't think so anyway
(21:02:03) ‪(Alice)‬: (I think you should be able to)
(21:02:06) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: OK, with the Horrors gone, the way is open for the chamber below. What do you guys do?
(21:02:19) ‪(Rocky)‬: He *is* breaking things...
(21:02:32) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: "Seal the gate, Elena"
(21:02:45) ‪(Rocky)‬: I'll gather a bunch of rocks for ammo, then stand ready.
(21:03:14) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Elena walks closer -she needs to be able to see the Gate in order to affect it.
(21:03:49) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: What are you guys doing? Going with her? Staying back?
(21:03:52) ‪(Rocky)‬ follows right behind, ready to act if something hurts the little one
(21:04:06) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: I reveil myself
(21:04:19) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: and trail behind the group
(21:04:22) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets -1+0+0+0=-1.
(21:04:37) ‪(Alice)‬: (Discipline Maneuver to place the Focused Mind on Alice)
(21:04:52) ‪(Alice)‬: Alice follows behind, with a look of concentration on her face.
(21:05:01) ‪(Alice)‬: (focused mind *aspect*)
(21:05:30) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: good idea
(21:05:32) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: OK guys. We all need to roll Lore or, if we have them, any supernatural sense that detects danger or magic.
(21:05:47) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets 1+-1+1+1=2.
(21:05:50) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: 3
(21:06:05) ‪ChatBot‬: (Elena/GM) rolls 4dF and gets -1+0+-1+1=-1.
(21:06:05) ‪(Rocky)‬: I got nothing.
(21:06:07) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: 4
(21:06:25) ‪(Rocky)‬: can I make the roll at mediocre without the skill?
(21:06:31) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: yes
(21:06:34) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Yes, you can
(21:06:35) ‪ChatBot‬: (Rocky) rolls 4dF and gets 0+1+1+-1=1.
(21:06:44) ‪(Rocky)‬: 1
(21:07:16) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets 1+1+0+1=3.
(21:07:24) ‪(Rocky)‬: I'm gonna roll Alertness to place the "ready to throw" aspect on Rocky, if that's OK
(21:07:29) ‪(Alice)‬: (Booyah, hows that for not having Lore, which is a good thing to change)
(21:07:54) ‪ChatBot‬: (Rocky) rolls 4dF and gets 0+0+-1+-1=-2.
(21:08:08) ‪(Rocky)‬: only 1. don't succeed.
(21:09:06) ‪(Rocky)‬: He's distracted by some unusual stone in the tunnel and isn't as prepped as he wants to be
(21:10:29) ‪ChatBot‬: (Elena/GM) has been logged out (Timeout).
(21:10:38) ‪(Rocky)‬: well. that's a problem
(21:10:45) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: yay we win
(21:10:47) ‪(Alice)‬: he'll be back.
(21:11:12) ‪ChatBot‬: Belial666 enters the channel.
(21:11:29) ‪Belial666‬: Sorry, connection problem
(21:11:42) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: /nick Elena/GM
(21:11:46) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: =p
(21:11:48) ‪(Rocky)‬: figured. WB. what's the last bit you saw?
(21:12:13) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Elena rolled 4, Fitz and Alice rolled 3, Rocky rolled 1
(21:12:37) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Fitz veiled, Alice cencentrated
(21:13:12) ‪Belial666‬: A glowing sigil suddenly appears overhead as the group walks forward and a black wave of destructive power explodes towards them (we totally failed our Lore rolls to detect the landmine so we need to roll athletics to dodge)
(21:13:29) ‪ChatBot‬: Belial666 is now known as (Elena/GM).
(21:13:34) ‪ChatBot‬: (Rocky) rolls 4dF and gets 0+0+1+0=1.
(21:13:40) ‪ChatBot‬: (Elena/GM) rolls 4dF and gets -1+-1+0+1=-1.
(21:13:44) ‪(Rocky)‬: Athletics 5 to dodge
(21:13:47) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Do I need to? (trailing behind the group?)
(21:13:50) ‪ChatBot‬: (Alice) rolls 4dF and gets 1+-1+1+0=1.
(21:13:58) ‪(Alice)‬: (Alice rolls a 6)
(21:14:10) ‪ChatBot‬: (Fitzroy) rolls 4dF and gets 1+0+-1+-1=-1.
(21:14:17) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: (Fitz rolled a +4)
(21:14:23) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: The landmine affects all three zones of the entryway so everyone needs to roll
(21:14:24) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: (if needed)
(21:14:39) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: It is a weapons 4 attack at +6
(21:14:41) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: big ass landmine
(21:14:58) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: fuck
(21:15:11) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Fitz takes a Moderate
(21:15:31) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Burned
(21:15:37) ‪(Alice)‬: The explosion catches alice but she is able to absorb the blast into her dream susbstance.
(21:15:52) ‪(Alice)‬: P OOXO(OO)
(21:15:58) ‪(Rocky)‬: do I take oneStress or 2?
(21:16:11) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Fitz: FP:1 P OXO M OOO S OOOO
(21:16:21) ‪(Alice)‬: (You take one, because of your armor 3)
(21:16:23) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: You take 2 stress
(21:16:37) ‪(Rocky)‬: minor consequence: chipped
(21:16:38) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Fitz: FP:1 P OXO M OOO S OOOO (Moderate Physical)
(21:16:43) ‪(Rocky)‬: cleared out next round
(21:16:46) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Hulking Size gives enemies +1 to hit
(21:16:58) ‪(Rocky)‬: fair.
(21:17:06) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: But why on earth would you take consequence?
(21:17:19) ‪(Elena/GM)‬: Just fill your second physical stress box.
(21:17:22) ‪(Rocky)‬: because I can clear it out with my recovery as a supplemental next round
(21:17:25) ‪(Fitzroy)‬: Because I have only three boxes

DFRPG / Dresden Files - Hawaii
« on: June 30, 2010, 11:37:25 AM »
So, Im running a Hawaii based dresden files game for some peeps, and I was wondering if anybody had some cool ideas I can steal. :D? So, any ideas :D?

Here is what I've got so far in mind for the setting:

Quote
Ancient Gods Slumber in the Islands of Hawaii, and few remember the rites to worship, and appease them. This is a land of powerful magics and even more powerful creatures. A land steeped in history, where fire mountains roar their fury into a clear blue sky, and the Ocean rises up against the land in an effort to wipe clean the slate, and start anew.

Old Things are awakening, and new alliances are forming. Will you help bridge the gap, and hold the darkness at bay? Or will the storm roll over you, like all the others before?

DFRPG / Brainstorming A Homebrew Power - Queen of a New Bloodline
« on: May 17, 2010, 03:09:03 AM »
So,
(click to show/hide)
and also playing my Red Court Vampire with a Soul (shes a Playable character via another Homebrew Power), I want to setup her safety plan regarding being in the bloodline of the red court. Im thinking she's gonna have a thaumaturgical ritual take place to sever the bloodline connection she has to the Red Court now, and start a new bloodline, with her as the fountain head.

Im trying to think of a power that represents that (a fountainhead of a bloodline should be unique to all of his/her followers) this is my idea for pulling that off, its based off of the tattoos of st. giles. Questions? Comments?

Fountainhead of Blood [–2]
Description: You've somehow managed to cut the metaphysical ties that exist between master and servant. You are no longer beholden to the Red King, and are a sovereign in your own right.
Musts: When you gain this power, you must change your High Concept to reflect your new status as the fountainhead of a new bloodline of red court vampires.
Skills Affected: Discipline, Social Skills.
Effects:
Self Control. Your control over the thirst is unparalleled, you gain +1 to your Discipline when using it defensively.
Deeper Reserves. You are the most powerful vampire in your bloodline. Add two boxes to the length of your hunger stress track.
Liege Lord. You are the fountainhead of a new bloodline of red court vampires. Any social skills used against other vampire courts or bloodlines gain a +1 bonus. Increase this to +2 when dealing with members of your own bloodline.

DFRPG / The Beauty of Stealth - Ambushing
« on: May 15, 2010, 07:55:08 AM »
Ok, so I was perusing the skills section a few days ago, and I was flabbergasted by how awesome the ambush trapping of stealth is. Let me give you an example situation to illustrate (because this shiz is good).

Quote from: Ambush
Ambush
With the Stealth skill, you can set up an ambush by rolling to hide as per the Hiding trapping, below. Given time to prepare, you might even create aspects on the scene to set up the ambush. When you decide to strike, the victim gets one last Alertness roll to see if he notices some- thing at the last moment. You have the option of keeping your hiding roll or rerolling your Stealth in response to this last Alertness roll. If the victim succeeds, he can defend normally (but not take a normal action in the first exchange). If the victim’s roll fails, he can only defend at an effective skill level of Mediocre.

Ok, so Im working on a character named Isabella Hargrove, she's a red court vampire who managed to hold onto her soul.

She has: Stealth at Great (+4, Fantastic +6 with Cloak of Shadows). Fists at Great (+4, Superb +5 if Might factors in, which it will in my example). She has Inhuman Speed and Strength, and Claws (weapon: 4).

Her High Concept is Red Court Rebel, and she also has an aspect of:

In Silence and Shadows
Isabella prefers to avoid direct confrontations. She would rather take to the shadows, wait, watch, and strike at the best opportunity. She has the patience of a spider, and weaves webs of deceit.
Invoke: Bonuses to stealth, attacking from an ambush, and lying.
Compel: To get her to wait, plan, slow down, or to get her in trouble for waiting too long, not acting fast enough.

So she has finally found the faerie responsible for beating up her boyfriend, Vidar, and she's found out where he lives, a Manor surrounded by twelve foot high walls.

So here is the setup:
Isabella knocks out the lamp around the corner that the target will be walking by, putting the scene aspect of "Dark Sidewalk" on the scene. She also climbs to the top of the wall and waits, putting the aspect "From Above" on her.

She rolls a 2 on her stealth, making it a +8, and decides to tag Dark Sidewalk to make it a +10.

The target walks by, on his way to the front gate whistling, without a care in the world. (He had to roll a 10 or better on his alertness).

Isabella strikes, tagging the aspect of "From Above", and spending two fate points her aspects of In Silence and Shadows, and Red Court Rebel (she is taking full advantage of her vampire strength). She rolls a 2 on her fists, making it a 11 shift fists attack at Weapon: 4. The target does ***not*** get a chance to use his defence skill, his defense is ranked at 0, since he is caught completely off guard. He rolls a 2 on his athletics. She hits him for 13 Shifts of damage.

Holy crap. Ambushes are sexy.

DFRPG / Permeable Wards, Rubber bands and Cellphones - What?
« on: May 14, 2010, 01:30:27 AM »
So, I was thinking of how a wizard might get a cellphone that works, my first idea was to build a magic cellphone, but that seems like it would be way to complex to pull off. My new idea is this:

A permeable ward set into the inside of a rubber band. Make it so magic can travel out of the ward, but not through it. Take a turned off cellphone, wrap it in the rubber band so that it is inside the ward. Then pull magic from within the ward out, to make sure there is no magic affecting the cell. Turn on the phone.

Would it work?

-edit-

This is sort of like when Harry tied Murphy's hair around her wrist to keep her from being affected by the mind fog in Summer Knight.

DFRPG / Transcripts from an AIM Game, Learning to Play
« on: May 13, 2010, 09:55:03 AM »
Me and a few friends are running an AIM game, and I figured Id post some transcripts, this doesn't have all of the chat log as sometimes we flip out of the group chat to discuss the strategy and other such stuff, but I think it might be helpful to some people. Levi is a bible thumping white court virgin, Luscious is a tricked out rastafarian demonic werelion, Tim is a Focused Practitioner with channeling and thaumaturgy. We are playing at Ankle Deep.

Right now we are about to assault a bunch of summer court who have been brokering tricksy deals with parents of talented children, basically the legalese has a trick to get the fey ownership of the children.

Oh, and we are using a rolling variant, 1d6-1d6 instead of 4dF. Gives a spread of -5 to +5.

Levi: Outside Warehouse – North Side
Outside Warehouse – West Side
Warehouse Entrance - Aspect: Locked and Rusted
Warehouse floor – deserted
Warehouse level 2 – break room and lockers
Warehouse Level 3 – Offices
Warehouse Roof – Windy, Cold, Dawning ))

Tim: Tim spreads his fingers wide, and runs them about in the air in front of the door. (Checking for wards rolled 1d6 and the result was: 2 rolled 1d6 and the result was: 6 +3 )
Tim: (-1, Yeah buddy, gotta hope theres no wards, )
Levi: ((You started in Streets around, Levi parked in Street in Front Of, and you've wandered around to the eastern entrance))
Tim: Tim whispers, very softly, "I don't think there are any wards, at least I cant feel them, if there where some the sunrise probably killed them."
Tim: Then he closes his eyes, and mumbles "Anoichtó Anoichtó Anoichtó", once again using the equivalent of a magical "bump key"
Lucius: Lucius looks for a window in the door to peek in first.
Tim: Tim reaches down, and twists the doorknob.
Levi: A bolt of lightning flies from the door and strikes Tim, knocking him backward and leaving the front of his suit smoking.
Lucius: Lucius blinks and stiffles a laugh, content to grin in the darkness.
Tim: Tim grunts, looks down at his suit, and brushes it off, the suit doesn't look worse for wear, but the shirt looks ruined.
Tim: "Assholes, this is a 150$ shirt."
Levi: Levi points the gun at the doorframe, and goes to check on Tim. "You okay, man?"
Tim: He gets up and brushes off his backside.
Lucius: "No wards?" Lu growls.
Tim: "Next time I'll let you check for wards."
Levi: Levi smiles. "Yeah, that asshole that told you there were no wards owes you a new shirt."
Tim: Tim twists the doorknob and opens the door, letting it open all the way, to make sure nobody is hiding behind it.
Levi: "I see you found the door," a booming voice asks.
Lucius: Lucius crouches, ready to pounce if necessary.
Levi: It's hard to ignore the snicker in his tone.
Tim: Tim snorts "No, this is just a really tall window, with a funny shutter."
Levi: ((The interior of the warehouse is darker than outside- you'll have the temporary aspect 'adjusting vision' for this pass))
Lucius: (Does my beast mode do anything about this?)
Levi: The man from before, the one who called himself Marcus is speaking, from a catwalk on the second floor. There are rooms on the second and third floor- this is a BIG warehouse
Lucius: (cat eyes and all that)
Levi: ((You still have to adjust, we'll jsut say your eyes adjust after your action this exchange, and their eyes adjust before their action next exchange))
Lucius: Lucius steps inside and glares at the man, squinting to see him.
Levi: Levi follows Lucius, gun held low but ready.
Tim: Tim waits till Lucius is in, then he moves in as well, looking for something to give himself some cover till his eyes adjust.
Levi: There's a large stack of pallets off to one side, but as Tim moves to take cover behind it, he notices someone large already back there
Tim: (How large is Large? )
Levi: "I didn't appreciate you breaking into our home and threatening us." Marcus speaks from above. "I gathered some friends who felt similarly."
Levi: ((He's a football player type, the kind with big shoulders and no neck. He doesn't look intelligent at all.))
Lucius: Lucius grunts and growls something in response to the man
Tim: "Must be because you are a chicken shit who needs help to solve his problems," Tim shouts back.
Lucius: ("We don't appreciate you being a dick")
Lucius: Lucius follows up his unknown words with a loud roar, filling the warehouse.
Levi: "Said the little man who was so brave pointing a scattergun at someone's face." Marcus calls back.
Tim: "It was the least lethal option available to me at the time."
Tim: "I left my BBGuns at home."
Lucius: (Intimidate 3. +5 / -3. Net +2. total 5)
Levi: ((Very nice. Alertness for everyone, for initiative?))
Lucius: (alertness 1. +5 / -5. net 0. Inhuman Speed +4. Total 5)
Tim: (Lore roll, rolled 1d6 and the result was: 3 rolled 1d6 and the result was: 5 +3)
Levi: ((Oh, I didn't like rolling- just the straight skill is fine))
Levi: ((The guy on the second level (Slick) just fired on Tim, and now it's Tim's turn to unleash hell, I beleive))
Levi: Do you guys need the zones and stuff again?
Lucius: probably not just yet
Levi: ((OOPS, USING MY OFFICIAL GM VOICE NOW))
Tim: might as well
Levi: ((The inside of the warehouse has a few zones:
Levi: Warehouse Entrance - Aspect: Locked and Rusted
Floor – deserted, Aspect: Cluttered with Junk
Level 2 – break room and lockers
Level 3 – Offices
Roof – Aspect: Windy, Cold, Dawning
Levi: ((I THINK THAT'S ALL YOU NEED? MARCUS IS ON THE SECOND LEVEL, ON THE CATWALK, AND SLICK IS UP THERE TOO, WITH A RIFLE OF SOME KIND.))
Levi: ((ON THE GROUND FLOOR ARE AN OGRE AND TWO CHANGELINGS))
Tim: (My turn now?)
Levi: ((YES))
Tim: Tim, having just been shot, decides that maybe a little defense is called for, gathers his will, holds out his right palm, and shouts "Pnév̱ma Frourá!"
Tim: (5 Shift Block Effect)
Levi: ((Is Tim using it as a block, or as armor?))
Tim: (As a block)
Levi: ((Okay, gotcha. Just wanted to make sure))
Tim: (Tim is at P OXOO M XOOO S OOO 1 Fate Point and a Mild Consequence of "Winged")
Levi: TIM (1 Fate) P OXOO M OOOO S OOO Complications: Minor (winged)
5 Shift block
LEVI (2 Fate) P OOO M OOOO S OOOO Complications:
LU (3 Fate) P OOOO(OO) M OO S OOOO H OOOO Complications:
Levi: Marcus shouts "Now!" and all hell seems to break loose in the lower level of the warehouse.
Levi: With a roar, Marcus brings down both fists on Lucius' back.
Lucius: (athletics, right?)
Levi: (Fists +5, +1 -6, Net -5, Total = 0)
Tim: (You can defend with fists too, but remember to count your inhuman speed bonus to athletics before you decide which to roll)
Levi: But Lucius nimbly dodges out of the way, taking only a glancing blow.
Levi: The stack of pallets shatter apart as an ogre charges Tim, head down and giant fists swinging together like a baseball bat.
Levi: ((Fists +4, +2 -3 Net -1, Total = 3))
Tim: rolled 1d6-1d6 and the result was: 1
Levi: Tim dodges to the left, but it isn't enough, and the Ogre's fist pound into him, his shield cracking with energy, lifting him off the ground. Tim flies backwards into some cardboard boxes.
Levi: Two shadows tear away from the gloom of the bottom floor of the warehouse, descending on Levi as he blinks, trying to adjust his eyes to the light.
Levi: ((Changeling 1: Fists +3, +5 -4, Net +1, total +4))
Levi: ((Levi: Defends with fists, +2, spends fate point to tag 'Sexy Beast' aspect for another +2, Roll +5 -3, Net +2, Total +6))
Levi: ((Changeling 2: Fists +3, +3 -5, Net -2, Total +1))
Levi: ((Levi Defends with Fists +2, +1 -2, Net -1, Total +1))
Levi: Levi's eyes flash white as he dodges out of the way of the first ugly changeling gang member, exposing his back to the second member. The half-ogre comes out of the shadows behind him, large fists slamming into Levi's back on the left, hitting his kidney.

Lucius: (ha!)
Levi: Levi turns, his eyes white and his skin pale. He roars, a blood-shaking sound that even makes his friends uncomfortable.
Levi: ((Intimidate: +2, +6, -1, Net +5, Total +7))
Tim: (They'll roll, rapport for defense, I believe)
Levi: ((Changeling 2, Rapport +0 +1 -1, Net +0, Total +0))
Levi: ((Hmmm... can you take more than one complication at a time for a hit like that?))
Tim: (you mean consequence? yeah)
Tim: (Remember though, the book says minor NPCS only get one consequence)
Tim: (before they "give up
Levi: ((Ahhh... I didn't remember that.
Tim: (So the guy will probably piss his pants and run away)
Levi: ((Oh, that we talked about yesterday. yeah, I remember that))
Levi: ((He totally just picked up the consequence "So Scared he Shat Himself," and yes, he's leaving the fight.))
Tim: (since he wont have a stress box large enough to hold the hit)
Levi: ((Okay, just Lefty is left.))
Levi: ((Now, back up to the top of the round. Lucius, if you would be so kind?))
Lucius: (sure!)
Lucius: Lucius growls something at Marcus and grins.
Lucius: He bares his claws with a menacing glint in the light and goes for broke
Levi: Changeling #2, a large fellow with an ugly flat face and a broken nose that looks like it was smeared on a painting folds up under the force of Levi's roar, sobbing uncontrollably on the ground.
Levi: The roar echoes off the inside of the building, and if you're close enough to smell what the man did in his pants, you're not lucky.
Tim: (oh btw, claws now give weapon: 2, in the udated pdfs)
Levi: ((ooh, cool! Congrats and happy chaunnakah, HF!))
Tim: (Yeah, they figured it was pretty weak, since a mundane dagger does the same, and doesn't cost a damned thing)
Levi: ((yeah, makes sense to me!))
Lucius: (Fists +4. +3 / -6. Net -3. Total +1)
Lucius: (makes sense to me too)
Tim: (You can spend a fate point to reroll I think)
Tim: (Instead of adding +2 to your roll)
Tim: (Yeah, just checked, you can)
Levi: Lucius responds by lashing out with his claws, gouging four furrows across Marcus' chest, ending their bloody path in his armpit.
Levi: ((Not too shabby for a -3 roll, eh?))
Levi: Slick decides to change tactics, as Tim is hidden by the wreckage of the boxes at the moment.
Levi: ((Randomly roll to determine target - evens Lucius, Odds Levi))
Levi: ((Odd.)) Slick draws bead on Levi, firing down at him from above.
Levi: ((Slick: Guns +4, +5 -4, Net +1 Total +5))
Levi: ((Levi: Defends with Athletics +0 +2, -1 Net +1, Total +1))
Levi: The gunshot takes Levi unaware in the right shoulder, spinning him around as he drops to one knee.
Levi: ((Levi takes the moderate physical complication "Gunshot Wound", and fills in his #3 box))
Levi: ((Tim's turn!))
Tim: (Making a declaration that there is a stack of steel rebar nearby for 1 fate point)
Tim: Tim spots a stack of steel rebar, and scurries behind it, then he calls up Power, and flings it at the stack, hoping to get a couple of the damned rods through the ogre, as the beast is Immune to his magic.
Tim: (Calling up 9 shifts of power rolled 1d6-1d6 and the result was: -3 +4 Discipline)
Tim: (Tim will use the 2 fate points he just got, rerolling and invoking magical muscle rolled 1d6-1d6+6 and the result was: 8 )
Tim: (Tim will let one shift bleed out into the environment, instead of taking the backlash)
Tim: (Tim is at P XXOO M XOOX S OOO, 0 Fate Points, Consequences: Minor (Winged), Moderate (Cracked Rib) )
Levi: As Tim siezes the rebar with magic, flinging it across the warehouse with the force of a ballistic missile, the force of the spell lifts trash and scraps, slamming them against the ogre, agains the wall, and flinging trash through the air.

Lucius: (nice)
Levi: ((Ogre #2 "Bruiser" defends with atheltics +2, Tim gets a +1 to hit because of the ogre's size, +5, -4, net +1, total +2 versus Tim's +9 attack. Ogre takes 7 shifts of damage, plus cold iron.))
Tim: (no, its (9-2)+8=15 Shifts)
Levi: ((ooh.
Levi: ((Oh, he dead then.))
Tim: (Weapon 8 on the rebar spears)
Lucius: (jeebus)
Levi: The ogre falls to the floor, dead. His compatriots stare in shock at the young wizard.
Tim: Tim lets out a racking cough, on account of his cracked ribs, wincing, and says "Take that you faerie ****."
Lucius: Even Lucius looks over at the wizard momentarily
Levi: ((I'll let Tim do an intimidate attack for free here.))
Tim: (ok, rolled 1d6-1d6 and the result was: -1)
Tim: ()
Levi: Tim wobbles woozily, giving a hard stare at the changelings and remaining ogre. "You should leave," Tim says, but spoils it by wobbling
Levi: ((They all rolled -1 or better. Sorry.))
Tim: (We should call in the Spin rules here)
Levi: ((Spin??))
Tim: (Since I needed to do 9 shifts to kill the ogre, you could say I have 6 points of Spin, and throw that ontop of my intimidate)
Levi: ((What is spin?))
Tim: (yeah they have an example of when you succeed so well at something you can take shifts in excess of what you needed to accomplish your goal and apply that to say, an athletics roll)
Lucius: (sounds like saying something was so badass it makes the next, related thing that much better?)
Tim: (essentially)
Levi: The remaining faeries seem to take Tim more seriously. None of them back down, but they're all scared of him now.
Tim: (So we worked it out to a intimidate at +2)

DFRPG / Magical Bargains - Ideas?
« on: May 12, 2010, 06:44:35 AM »
I was trying to come up with some realistic magical bargains, and here is what I got:

Selling a magical cure for X Malady in exchange 10 years of that person's youth.
Selling aid in exchange for a portion/all of the buyers magical ability.
Bargains for a "take my death" card in exchange for saving a life.

Any others?
