It's cool. I understand things can get pretty taxing, I haven't done a whole bunch of work on the back-end of a forum but I have dealt with similar issues. I'll just post anything I find helpful, just in case :P

Instead of continuing to derail other suggestion threads or making a whole ton of small threads, I'm making this one specifically for suggesting additional 'features' that people find to be available and possibly helpful.

I think the Bookmarks would be good. It would help to keep important/popular topics active without needing to dig for buried threads. But also allow members to create their own personalized list of important material/discussions. Also it will hopefully help with the issue of multiple similar topics being cross-posted by everyone.

I wouldn't make that assumption. The 2.x line is still all "release candidate" with its versions. Not ready for primetime, for my taste. :)

If you look at the bottom of the page you'll see the version we're on! :)

Ah, duh, I probably should have checked more thoroughly (brain fart) :P Anyways, I was going through the mod list for various SMF versions. A lot of good stuff there. But it's well.. a lot :P

I've written a perl script that'll take care of 90-95% of the job, actually. I just need to get the all-clear from Pris so I can point it at the other boards outside of the Community area.

Ah, ok. That makes more sense :P Just for future reference though, what SMF version are you using? I assume it's 2.0?

We're *also* going to be giving most community topics about a 90 day window for inactivity before they go away -- but that's a manual (and now that I'm doing it, tedious) process and probably won't be done with high consistency. Pruning makes the database leaner, which will help the site function better.

Ouch. There's no way to add automatic topic pruning? Or is it just that doing so would prune off inactive topics that need to be kept like the rules, stickies, etc. ? If it's the latter, I'm sure something could be figured out to make it work and thus easier. But if it's just not available, you might want to look into it (or better, I'll look into it and provide links :P), I'm 99% sure we had automatic pruning set up on the forum I ran for my last MMO Guild.

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Give Us Your Chat Policy Suggestions
« on: June 02, 2010, 06:36:14 PM »
I think a general 'No Spam' policy would be best. Simply "If you're 1/2 filling the chat window with uselessness... you're spamming, so stop it!" That way it covers all the afore mentioned spam related issues as well as anything that may arise in the future

As for colors, different people will see it differently based off hardware or simply perspective. I think, as long as people are polite about it there's no reason to police that particular aspect.

Really, if you're going to fix it, might as well fix it right the first time. I understand the desire for the "general discussion"/"helping hand" type forums, but it's only delaying the inevitable. Give enough people enough rope and people will start hanging themselves. Even with more moderator types it's just going to end up having those new moderators end up fed-up with stuff as well (I speak from experience here).

If these boards are intended to discuss Jim Butcher and his collective works, then 50%+ of the posts shouldn't be about things that have nothing to do with said topic, IMHO. I think between a chat and specified topic-oriented forums it's really going above and beyond.

I think a "Hobbies" section which would encompass all kinds of 'crafting', gaming, illustration, etc. that might not fall within the Dresden related categories would be most efficient. That way it's still a specific topic-related forum but without needing to create a billion child forums to accommodate a vast selection of hobbies.

The "Forum Games" section seemed like a good idea too. It would allow for more 'funny' or 'odd' postings without a general free-for-all atmosphere.

I like this spoiler code much better than the old one! The old one wasn't 'bad' but it could get annoying when the last word or 2 of the spoiler didn't want to highlight with the rest or when on a laptop with default mouse, etc.

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: Attack of the Stickied threads.

This has been raised as an issue for a number of years, yet your suggestion hasn't been implemented; given how responsive Fred's been to suggestions in the past, this seems indicative. Might want to consider the possibility that it ISN'T an easy solution, or that taking that route eliminates positive aspects that you may not be considering.

It's actually rather simple, unless the admin panel of these boards is vastly different from every other one I've experienced and doesn't really eliminate anything positive if stickies are merely combined rather than deleted outright. However it probably still will not resolve the issue of people complaining since there are still going to be a number of beneficial stickies. Which is probably the issue, it may take a little time to decide which stickies to combine or whatever and even less time/effort to implement, but there's probably more important things to worry about considering even after the time and effort people will still be complaining.

Problem with a 'resources sub-forum' is that it removes announcements intended to govern the parent-forum. However, there is a benefit to consolidating the stickies beyond cosmetics and accessibility. Simply, it cuts down on the number of threads, which should be a benefit considering the recent concern of topic pruning, etc.

A global "Read before posting" sticky would accommodate all the the administrative posts and even locked should still be editable by global admins. Followed by a "FAQ" sticky, pertaining to the base topic of the forum, which is fairly standard. Then a specialized sticky or 2 such as the "Short Stories" sticky (Personally I find this helpful as I tend to lose track of the Short Stories order and upcoming, etc.) would be a non-issue.

*cough*

Uhm, is it possible for one of the High Sidhe to become possessed in some way? Kind of like how the Fallen can possess a mortal I mean? Or that could otherwise get to them through the people they are bound to?

Not sure if you wanted to get this specific, but:

Harry met Michael (or Charity at least) at least 5 years prior to events in Grave Peril based off his discussion with Charity at the police station, which should put their meeting at around the same time he came to Chicago.

In Grave Peril while going to rescue Susan and Justine from Bianca, Harry crosses through to the Nevernever and states/writes/narrates it as looking just like his apartment on the 'other side'.

In Changes, Bob mentions he should have found out what was on the 'other side' from there years ago and

So, when did the change take place in the Nevernever? Or, if it had always been as described in Changes, what is the difference in circumstance that I'm missing?
