DFRPG / Re: Constructs (Gargoyles,Golems etc)

Ok so from an NPC form I really don't need to worry about  ;D

What would people recommend from a PC character that wants to create constructs to use as agents of his own?

As this is an Idea a character wants to use....

So the creatures are not themselves thinking and motivated, they only follow the orders that were given at creation.

So would it be more of a conjuration/Item Creation/Transformation

Not sure that acting as a contact is what I want. Its aspects are probably going to be the commands it is given and its creature types....

DFRPG / Constructs (Gargoyles,Golems etc)

OK interesting questions,

I want to create a NPC of a Warlock who uses animated agents against the Player Characters.

I think that Summoning and Binding would be the best way to do this, but how would you work out the power and abilites for the Constructs?

Would I use the number of Shifts to determin the extra 'fate points' that can be spent on developing creatures using the initial difficult for developing a base line of the abilities?

Not sure what the best way to do this is......

Cheers (actually this would be useful for one of my characters as well who wants to play a Necromancer, doh)

DFRPG / Items of Power and Aspects
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:52:29 PM »
Ok this is a strange and random thought but can/would/should some items of power have there own aspects?

I know you need an aspect as part of the conditions of having an Item , but would specifically powerful relics (possibly th eterm to use) have there own aspects and if a player gets hold of one of these Items?

Using an exaple Desendant of Jim Bowie has his knife and uses it to hunt the supernatrual, He has the aspect "the Bowie family legacy" in both connection to the Item and his family history specificly to hunt down and destroy evil that effects his lan of Freedom. But could the Knife itself have a Aspect like "a history of Blood and violence" or "everyone knows what it is and what it does" and "Cuts to the Heart" or would these be stunts that would be part of the knife???

DFRPG / Need help with Mortal Stunt for vigilante character...
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:11:30 PM »
I have an idea for a vigilante type character who acts a muscle as required to the members of the Paranet. As such I want him to be a mortal, who has lost his little sister (who is/was minor talent/focused practioner) who was/is being pursued by an sorcerer/warlock for her power.

Part of the concept for the character was based a little off of the Phantom. What I really wanted to do was to 'Aspect' (can I use aspect as a verb!!!) an oppoenent by Marking them (kind of like Zorros Z except by punching them really really hard with a specific ring, design to be decided, a skulls a little cliche though)

I was thinking that killer blow and an Aspect like 'Sworn Ring of Vengance' would work, but I don't like the idea of killer blow. I am not trying to kill my opponent but mark them for others to see....

Also what else would you recommend for a vigilante type character, not sure about using guns as based in the UK and guns are a big no no

Hi I also went down the path of a native ameican shape shifting werebear, we actaully ended up agreeing that as the form came from the spirit world that natrual weapons from the earths cretures would bypass mystical toughness. We decidieed that this would be a +2 as it requires a bit of research into xescovering this weakness

I really like the idea of a Nephilim, if you where to give him inhuman toughness what sort of Catch do you give the son child, decendant of an angel.....

DFRPG / What to do when Stress Boxes Change, Help....
« on: April 17, 2010, 07:09:29 AM »
I am have just confused myself.

I am a were form with Inhuman Toughness and due to my skill shuffle now has a Endurance of Great or Good from Average, and hulking size, meaning my character now has 5 !!! additional stress boxes (all clear so far)

Then due to some reason, spell, compell etc I revert to a human form,

What happens to me? do I all of a sudden take consequences for the additional Stress boxes and any stress in them or do they just disappear?

What happens to the Stress, its Stressing me out

Thank you this really helped the character development:

Here is how the Picturamancer ended up

After ages of trying to do this we found a nice simple solution, the character can use Performance to make declerations during the ritual phase to tag it for the ritual, flavour wise this can include mixing ingrediants into the paint etc....

Its a nice thematic work around driven of the characters High aspect, and easily usable as well by a Focused Practioner, The Character has the ability to work only effects that he can paint so Wards which can be painted onto any surface of the building or hung in a suitable venue, Summoning and binding (which works  in a really cool way the Canvas is placed inside a ring of Copper Frame and then the summoned creature is bound to its 'image' as drawn by the character...), and Crafting (this includes special paints, not potions that allow certain effect, focus item paint brushes... you get the idea)

Any way I hope this helps with your idea it took a while to get the balance right with this character but now very very happy with it.....

The only other thought we did have and where we then started to struggle if you could use an Stunt to replace Lore with Performance, in a way of 'feeling' the spell through his art, making it more of an Art than a science, however had no way of really setting conditions of the trappings of the Lore Skill and struggled with it for ages, and in the end the decleration just felt better... However if you can see a way that this would work it would make a real difference to the character as he is just creating magic with no Lore, meaning he will be unaware of what the consequences would be.... a great hook early on...

Having designed an Painter character that uses Performance to help his Ritual spells.

Note the high concept is Picturamancer (Pictura is Latin for Painting)

and is actually hired by local supernatruals for his works of Art....

Having an Idea for a smaller villian for a campaign, I would like him to be able to summon small swams of creatures, Bats, Rats etc, also to use them for Wards, imagine walking into a protected place breaking the ward and thousands of little bugs swarm the players, or rats, i like rats for villians)

Would you just use the summoning rules and some sort of mind magic to control there interllects? Ward for wards of course, its really if you would use the same summoning rules for creatures and a number of smaller creatures

Cheers

Ok so to steal an idea from one of my other favourite authors (Terry Pratchet) and much like a Dragon from the Disc, could I have a +0 Catch Vunerable Spot, a place where the tough hide of said creature is less tough?

DFRPG / Can I tag a catch
« on: April 12, 2010, 06:02:04 PM »
Ok so nice simple example my question is does it make snse in the rules as a catch is not an aspect:

confronted by some fey our intrpid hero wants to stop them from kidnapping the young girl he is protecting he decides to use some iron filelings he has to block the fey from approaching by using there catch of iron and using his intimidation to warn them off and that he knows how to deal with them. As GM I would say that all makes sense except a catch is not a aspect. Same would apply with holy water and demons, holy symbols and vamps, evil monster and his 'catch'

Would you have to declare the catch? I am a little confused

DFRPG / Historical Dresden Settings?
« on: April 12, 2010, 03:08:03 PM »
I have just had an awesome thought could you do 1920's dresden, I mean there is nothing mechanically that would change?

Also and inspired by some comments people made about city settings, you could pilfer so much info from Cthulhu Setting books....

Does anybody think that a different time period wouldn't work?

is there an exisitng time line of known facts about different fractions in the dresden world, when people signed the accords, who was around when, that kind of thing?
