DFRPG / Can Stunts affect Magic?
« on: March 15, 2011, 11:43:53 PM »
So I have been thinking can Mortal stunts effect magic cast. The reason this has come up was fro
Two of my players who are focused practioners.

One is a Pictomancer and the other a pyromancer.

Here are the questions

Pictomancer: can I use crafting (for magic paintings) instead of lore, so functions like a trapping change.
Pyromancer: can I use a stunt like "angry youth" to power attacks but only when my anger is fueling my pyromancy attack (power)

What do people think ?

DFRPG / City Creation - Miami
« on: December 06, 2010, 02:37:33 PM »
So looking for some help from people who live and know Miami Better than I as a Brit would :)

The reason we are using Miami is because we have other UK locations for our other RPG games, and have had previous games based in those locations that would be hard to displace.

Theme:
A Restless City

Theme:
The Point (Point of the bermuda triangle) where the Supernatural and Mundane Meet.

Threat:
A city under seige from all sides.

OK logic behind these.
The restless city is a reference to both the restlesss spirits (the dead and Loa, and other spirits)

With a little creative lisence the city is a point on the bermuda triangle, making the boarder between this world and the nevernever thin and liable frothings to pop through .

Finally a city under siege, this represents the natrual the city stuck on a thin strip of land between the evergaldes and the sea, the influxing immigration population, the spirits of the loa and other creatures (

Andyway any thoughts. or guidence would be appreciated

DFRPG / How to build a Grimoire or Magical Codex
« on: December 02, 2010, 10:24:53 AM »

Ok I have been trying to get my head arouind something and can't.

Have looked through the books (alot) and need an answer for, can I build a IoP that is both a focus and a bonus to a skill, or allows for adding maneuvers, not supernatrual powers

The reason being is the item needs to be really flexible but will have no inherent powers of its own, none, squat, nada.

However as a Grimoire/or Magical Codex it will allow the character to add to his checks by using the Item for help within certain frames of reference (in this case the Dead)

The Characters Aspect is: Keeper of the Book of Last Requests, and basically he makes deals for the dead to interact on there behalf on the mortal plane. However if he ever needs a favour returned he can go back to one of the deals he or his family have made in the past an claim on it. (note as an aspect as well the player can be compelled to pay up on deals his family have made in the past for gain with no payment)

Any help would be appreciated as I have hit a mental brick wall for good ways to reflect this and it will be an intrinsic part of the character so want it to feel right

(note he is a focused practioner (ectomancer), with dead speak, from a long family of "mediums" back to the victorian age when the book was created)

Hi all,

So I have a couple of rules questions aout the fate system.

First is negative spin, I can't find anything in the rule ook aout what happens if you get a negative role
example: character with no fire arms skill and no fate points left picks up a revolver and fires, they role -4 on the fate dice and does this mean they just fail? or should this have much larger conitation, hand gun explodes/jams etc, where do I find this type of example in the rules and how would other ajudicate this.

Also on the matter of Consequences, if some one takes a serious physical consequence roken Ribs, the way I understand is the first tag against this is free. But if the goons fight the PCs have no fate points how do reflect on going that the character is in large amounts of pain, he surely does not go, ohhh my ribs, ut I can now run a marathon.....

All help is appreciated, I am really trying to get my head around this to run it...

DFRPG / Really Magic Computer
« on: July 07, 2010, 12:10:33 PM »
So I have an Idea about a character/NPC that would be really interesting and want to see what people think:

Basically the Magic user (focus praticoner or wizard) is part of the computer him self.

The basic components are (crafting, Divination and Conjuration)

So works as follows, The computer is the way the character focuses his magic, the crafting would be the character using 'download component' from the various spell components to download an effect into an item (eg creating magic mobile phones through rune inscribed rocks)

The Divination is fundermentally the magical equivelent of a search engine,  being able to find out information  from any word writtern, peoples memories, drawn maps etc

The conjuration allow the character to print (i really like this idea) the items he wants for spell components and things he may need want for a specific situation.

I forsee the computer as being a single very powerful focus item that effects the fine controll of all these items....

What do people think????

DFRPG / Help with a hi concept....
« on: July 05, 2010, 03:23:22 PM »
Just would like some help

Have a concept for a character I really like.

Dr of Archeology is messing around on some Ancient Minoan ruins in Crete and discovers an anciant Labyrinth (actually a portal in to a part of the Never Never) and the Spirit of the Minotaur inhabits his body as a way of escaping its spiritual prison.

So very mild mannered Dr Washington 'Wash' Harris a Dr or Archeology is a member of Paranet community in search of a 'cure' although the spirit is so strong it will not budge and seems to be part of his spirit/soul, so currently looking at ways of supressing the Minotaur inside him.

However when he looses his temper and gets angry he transforms into the Minotaur....

so couple of things I need help with...

  • first is the High Concept I can't make anything sound right......themically
  • Second is the Powers, what do people think fits (Claws/Horns is a given as well as possible strength etc but do people think beast of change/marked by power/demonic co pilot, also was think Inhuman form with Involuntary change (kind of like the Hulk, only when made angry (Bulls being known for there temper)

as always appreciate the help (power level is Chest High)

Cheers

DFRPG / Constructs (Gargoyles,Golems etc)
« on: June 11, 2010, 12:14:45 PM »
OK interesting questions,

I want to create a NPC of a Warlock who uses animated agents against the Player Characters.

I think that Summoning and Binding would be the best way to do this, but how would you work out the power and abilites for the Constructs?

Would I use the number of Shifts to determin the extra 'fate points' that can be spent on developing creatures using the initial difficult for developing a base line of the abilities?

Not sure what the best way to do this is......

Cheers (actually this would be useful for one of my characters as well who wants to play a Necromancer, doh)

DFRPG / Items of Power and Aspects
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:52:29 PM »
Ok this is a strange and random thought but can/would/should some items of power have there own aspects?

I know you need an aspect as part of the conditions of having an Item , but would specifically powerful relics (possibly th eterm to use) have there own aspects and if a player gets hold of one of these Items?

Using an exaple Desendant of Jim Bowie has his knife and uses it to hunt the supernatrual, He has the aspect "the Bowie family legacy" in both connection to the Item and his family history specificly to hunt down and destroy evil that effects his lan of Freedom. But could the Knife itself have a Aspect like "a history of Blood and violence" or "everyone knows what it is and what it does" and "Cuts to the Heart" or would these be stunts that would be part of the knife???

DFRPG / Need help with Mortal Stunt for vigilante character...
« on: May 21, 2010, 02:11:30 PM »
I have an idea for a vigilante type character who acts a muscle as required to the members of the Paranet. As such I want him to be a mortal, who has lost his little sister (who is/was minor talent/focused practioner) who was/is being pursued by an sorcerer/warlock for her power.

Part of the concept for the character was based a little off of the Phantom. What I really wanted to do was to 'Aspect' (can I use aspect as a verb!!!) an oppoenent by Marking them (kind of like Zorros Z except by punching them really really hard with a specific ring, design to be decided, a skulls a little cliche though)

I was thinking that killer blow and an Aspect like 'Sworn Ring of Vengance' would work, but I don't like the idea of killer blow. I am not trying to kill my opponent but mark them for others to see....

Also what else would you recommend for a vigilante type character, not sure about using guns as based in the UK and guns are a big no no

DFRPG / What to do when Stress Boxes Change, Help....
« on: April 17, 2010, 07:09:29 AM »
I am have just confused myself.

I am a were form with Inhuman Toughness and due to my skill shuffle now has a Endurance of Great or Good from Average, and hulking size, meaning my character now has 5 !!! additional stress boxes (all clear so far)

Then due to some reason, spell, compell etc I revert to a human form,

What happens to me? do I all of a sudden take consequences for the additional Stress boxes and any stress in them or do they just disappear?

What happens to the Stress, its Stressing me out

DFRPG / Can I tag a catch
« on: April 12, 2010, 06:02:04 PM »
Ok so nice simple example my question is does it make snse in the rules as a catch is not an aspect:

confronted by some fey our intrpid hero wants to stop them from kidnapping the young girl he is protecting he decides to use some iron filelings he has to block the fey from approaching by using there catch of iron and using his intimidation to warn them off and that he knows how to deal with them. As GM I would say that all makes sense except a catch is not a aspect. Same would apply with holy water and demons, holy symbols and vamps, evil monster and his 'catch'

Would you have to declare the catch? I am a little confused

DFRPG / Historical Dresden Settings?
« on: April 12, 2010, 03:08:03 PM »
I have just had an awesome thought could you do 1920's dresden, I mean there is nothing mechanically that would change?

Also and inspired by some comments people made about city settings, you could pilfer so much info from Cthulhu Setting books....

Does anybody think that a different time period wouldn't work?

is there an exisitng time line of known facts about different fractions in the dresden world, when people signed the accords, who was around when, that kind of thing?

DFRPG / Item of Power/Sponsered Magic Question
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:20:54 PM »
Ok so I think I am beginning to get a handle on this but,

I have an Item of Power, that offers Sponsered Soulfire Channeling and Ritual.....

Using the power through the sword to create a Ward on an area from Demonic Influences, Spirit Damage (through Channeling) to damage a vampire etc all make sense with in the system and now completely understand,

Heres the question my player has just asked me, can the sword (does the sword) convey the ability for item slots?

I am tempted to say only enchanted items that use the sword as a creation factor so plunging it into a liquid substence to create a potion for example....

Also and the radon for the modify I now have a bother player asking if sponsered magic works though an item (the player in question is thinking of using a hammer as his item and being a scion of Thor/avatar of Thor but the powers in the hammer and is an hierloom)

I really need to get my head around this

HELP

does this sound right? (i don't think focus items are applicable as the sword itself is the way the power is focused/avalible to the weilder)
