DFRPG / Fate Dice kickstarter is afoot! also, DFRPG in ePub/Kindle
« on: April 20, 2013, 09:58:13 PM »
Folks tell me that it sure looks like the set we're going to reveal at $30,000 will be a Dresden Files themed set, but who am I to say? ;)

Personally I think the already-revealed sets go great with DFRPG play already...

And in other news, we're in the middle of rolling out epub (nook) and mobi (kindle) formats for the Dresden Files RPG. You can already find them on the Evil Hat webstore. We've stripped out most of the graphics and inventive formatting, so this is a largely text-only experience; licensing prevents us from bundling it together for prior purchasers, unfortunately -- but the good news there is that due to the "stripped down" presentation, we've priced these versions very cheap.

Enjoy :)

Announcements / Making The Forum Pay For Itself
« on: August 26, 2012, 04:13:53 PM »
Two ways are employed here to help this website (and Jim's) pay for its operating expenses -- one requires your active effort, the other is passive.

Actively, buying books and other things through the links found on the Jim-Butcher.Com store pages will help put money in the site's pocket by way of referral fees:

A great way to place your preorders!

Site Suggestions & Support / Trying out CloudFlare
« on: August 25, 2012, 01:01:03 AM »
Not that the forums have been particularly slow since the move, but I've decided to try out cloudflare.com for this site. Let me know if you see wonkiness, though the change should largely be transparent (and should reduce the amount of slowness encountered overall).

Evil Hat has launched its Race to Adventure kickstarter campaign today, set in the Spirit of the Century universe:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/evilhat/race-to-adventure-a-spirit-of-the-centurytm-board

This is Evil Hat's first board game, but if it turns out to be seriously successful, it likely won't be its last... :)

Make sure to check out the video. Long time fans of Spirit of the Century should find plenty of "squee" in it. :)

Also, the second sample chapter just went up:

Hey folks,

We're releasing a series of sneak peeks for our upcoming board game, Race to Adventure!, over on our facebook page, as we hit successive 100-like milestones (next up: 900) -- https://www.facebook.com/EvilHatProductions

If we smash through the 1000 mark, and reach 1100 and beyond, we'll start posting some sneak peeks of the Paranet Papers supplement for the Dresden Files RPG.  Thought you might like to know. Come on over and click that "like" box, wouldja?

Also -- today we released the first chapter of DINOCALYPSE NOW, Evil Hat's first foray into fiction. We'll be launching a kickstarter campaign on March 20th to turn this one novel into a trilogy, and maybe more, and would sure appreciate your support when the time comes. You can read the sample chapter here - http://www.deadlyfredly.com/tag/dinocalypse/ - and learn more about the trilogy here - http://www.dinocalypse.com/

Site Suggestions & Support / Known Issues After Downtime
« on: January 22, 2012, 08:07:28 PM »
Okay, I'm trying to collect known issues after the downtime.

Right now the main one I can see is that I'm not getting emailed notification of replies (I'd bet the same problem exists for PMs for folks who've opted to have those emailed to them). I think this is an issue with the configuration of mail on the new server rather than the forum software itself, but we'll see.

Anything else?

Please limit the chatter; I only want to see replies reporting genuine technical issues with the forum.

Announcements / We're Back, Tenderly
« on: January 20, 2012, 11:11:33 PM »
So... we're back. Hopefully there's only been a couple days' worth of posts lost at most.

Things are still a little shaky -- not everything that was in place is back in place -- but we are on a new server (with healthy, RAID-ed disks and twice the memory), with better direct control over our name service and server functions. It's a good start.

I can't predict whether or not something serious will crop up that'll need a "restart" (i.e., another database roll-back) in the interim. In the short term, I've disabled the search function (sorry about that) and may turn off other features in order to manage server load as tightly as possible. I've also got to get certain backup procedures back in place (in addition to the new ones) in order to make sure we're ship shape in case another debacle hits us.

But the good news -- beyond forum upness -- is that we're back, and we're no longer saddled with Midphase, our former service provider. Now we're with the lean, mean operation of M5 Hosting, and I can already tell I'm likely to be happier with them.

So, go gentle, folks. But go!

(And remember, buying stuff from the jim-butcher.com store kicks back sales referral fees to me that helps pay for the site.)

Announcements / WARNING: Sudden Site Migration Impending
« on: September 29, 2011, 03:35:13 PM »
Hey folks,

The hosting provider here suddenly declared that they'll be moving this site over to a new hosting arrangement within the next seven days. At any point during those seven days, we could find ourselves over on the new set-up and having rolled back posts several days. I have very little control over the outcome here, so mainly I'm just bracing as best I can to weather the storm.

Hate them. So much.

Announcements / PSA: The Other Guy
« on: August 24, 2011, 12:55:56 PM »
Something to remember:

Just because the other guy doesn't agree with you doesn't mean he (or she) is stupid. It also doesn't mean she (or he) is attacking you. It's just a disagreement.

You may be wired -- biologically, psychologically -- to think the other guy misses all the nuances of your position, but do your best to overcome that. We're not animals here, people, even if that's the stock we come from.
