Site Suggestions & Support / Re: New Board?
« on: August 01, 2011, 03:35:24 AM »
I personally like the new formats for the most part, makes it softer around the edges and cleans up the look.  However, I miss the stars, don't like the uber-wide quote box even for one line of text (predominantly in sigs), and the font size in the reply box is about double what it was.  But we're (read: iago  :P ) working on that. :)  Nitpicky things in the larger scheme.

Also, loads MUCH faster in Firefox 5 than the old SMF version did.

Jim's publicist, Angela Januzzi, did the legwork on this one. :D

Right.  Difference between publisher and publicist.  Go, brain!  :D

49
From Jim's publicist:

A recent B&N receipt for any of Jim Butcher’s books is required to join the signing line. Passes handed out at 5pm.

Thank you, Pris.  And thanks to those higher up, as well (assuming Anne in this case).

Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Signing in New York, NY on 8/2

Ugh.  B&N... overrated.  Yeesh.  Hope everything works out for you guys (and me, too!).

Okay, I called both the store here in VA and the store in NYC to compare stories.  VA said any B&N or BN.com receipt will get you a wristband.  The guy at the NY store said that if you buy the book at the store, you get a wristband (as supplies last).  You CAN bring in a receipt from another B&N and get a wristband, but those buying the book at the location get priority, so there may not be wristbands left.

Basically, show up as early as you can to get a wristband, whether your receipt is from the NY B&N, another B&N, or BN.com.

52
Well, as of right now, I /think/ I'm going to make it. 70% certain.

53
I've had some stuff come up, namely in the form an account statement from my school with a bill more than double what was estimated to me.  Whether or not I will be able to come remains to be seen at this point, and will probably stay undecided until Sunday.

54
And as with anything customer service, one phone call turned into three.  And the rudeness.  Ugh.

[Repeating for linking purposes]

Barnes and Noble has moved the online availability date of GS from the release date (today) to August 4th.  Why, I don't know.  I couldn't get an answer, straight or otherwise, to that.  I called the B&N store where the signing will be held, and the sales rep told me that the site was "correct" for the site, but that the stores were physically releasing the book today.  He said that my best option would be to call Customer Service and *attempt* to cancel the order, and then just pick up a copy on the signing date.  So, after about three phone calls, I finally got through to a Customer Service rep, and am attempting to cancel my online order.  It's not a guaranteed thing, though, so keep that in mind.

Basically, if you ordered a copy of GS from Barnes and Noble, double check your order.  Make sure that you're getting the book when you specified, instead of sometime next week.  If you aren't able to cancel your order, remember you can always go to the signing, pick up another copy, and then once your pre-ordered book comes in, take one or the other back to a B&N store with the receipt from the signing to get a refund.

The moral of this story is:  Garrett doesn't like Barnes and Noble, and this is an example of why.

55
Okay, the guy I talked to said that there's nothing they can do about it, the site is "correct" for the site.  He recommended calling the 800 number and attempting to get a refund, then picking up the book in-store so you have the receipt for the signing.

Making another phone call.

56
Looks like I'll be making another phone call.

57
Interesting.  B&N.com is now showing GS as available on August 4th instead of today.  Weird.

58
It's not the fact that they refused to comment on the whole signing thing that ticked me off.  It was the way they went about it.  But I'm not here start a flame war against any retailer bookseller, so I'm stopping there.

Anyway, as to the signing.  I'm going to be bringing a number of items with me, unless we hear differently closer to the signings.

59
Wow.  Just got off the phone with the B&N.  Main reason I dislike B&N: incredibly rude and uppity.  [/rant]

Anyway, they refuse to comment on whether you will be allowed to bring extra books in with you.  Also, they will not hold preorders in-store past release date.  I was going to see if I couldn't preorder a couple copies, and then pick them up on the 1st, but that's a no-go.  *grumble*

I've got myself, and anywhere from +1 to +3.  It'll be a definite 2, though.
