Cinder Spires Spoilers / Thoughst about The Olympian affaire (SPOILERS!!!!)
« on: December 19, 2023, 04:53:10 AM »
Stop reading if you did not read the book! I am serious. This is full of SPOILERS.

There is another thread about the map, so I won't speak about that here, but I finished the book today and I had lots of things to say. You are warned, this is going to be long.

General comment:
I REALLY liked the book. BUT at first I struggled getting invested in it. The fact that every chapter changed the characters we were following was very distracting and it was difficult for me to find the motivation to keep reading at least until more than half of the book.
Like with TAW, I still think the characters are my favourite thing in the book. Cavendish is an excellent villain. Gwen, Ferus, Folly and Grimm, and the Spirearch too, are my favourite but I liked most of the others too. I am not a fan of Elaine, I mean, Calliope but in general I enjoy the others. Among the new ones, Ravenna is the best, but I liked all the others: Abigail (even when, you know...), the surface etherealist and the minor characters like the cats, Hamish and Tilde and Vincent.

Specific comments

1) I love the little details, like at the beginning Kettle telling Grimm that not many people would have taken a moment to think, or Gwen "calmly" shooting a revenant, or Abigail understanding what the glasses she gave her meant to Folly. I think the little details made the characters so great.

2) I am really, really mad about the Spanish names. I mean, yes, I know a writer is free to invent whatever names they want but most TOA names are written like nowadays, except by some Spanish ones. And yes, some of them are perfectly correct, like Espira, Chavez and Rafael. But, for example, it is (possible but) weird that Rafael becames Rafe and Espira is Renaldo instead of Reynaldo. Valesco is a very unusual name. I would have expected Velasco, which is very common. Raoul, Francesco and del Aurora are also quite uncommon writings, as Raśl, Francisco and de la Aurora would be more natural. But if that was all, I would be just moderately annoyed. What irritated me so much was the ship called CONQUISTODOR. Like...what? Can you imagine a ship named ConquerIr?  >:( >:( >:(

3) I loved the duels. After having felt robbed of a proper duelling in TAW, I absolutely enjoy those. Still, I think like a lot of Grimm's duel depended of the intelligence Abigail gathered watched Valesco duelling a random character. As if a super expert duelist always used the same tactics and style. It is a reduced sampling  :)
Also, I have a question. I am pretty sure I've read that Grimm's duel was "at noon" and Abigail's "at sunset" but then it seems that they happened at the same time. What did I get wrong?

4) I was not so inlove with the tea meeting from the ladies scene. The attack on Abigail felt super weird and clumsy. It seemed that having a man in a female reunion, particularly if he just appeared to hit the victim, was not a valid reason for offense and duelling. It would be just a serious gaffe from the host. Also, if people heard that the great and terrible duelist had decided to hit a pregnant woman (the warriorborn coud smell the pregnancy) wouldn't have been embarrassing for Valesco? And more important, what exactly was the plan? Because as far as I understood, they did not know about Folly before the meeting, so for all they know Abigail would have gone into the reunion, trade some veiled insults, Hestia would have made her feel ashamed...and she would have left without Valesco having the chance of doing anything.

5) I liked the surface scene with the aetherialist and the old cat, and the battle with the Scyther  :)

6) I understand is very convenient for the plot but I would think the logical action for Grimm would have been trying to blow Ransom's ship instead of boarding it and trying to take a new technology.

7) PLEASE tell me they will rebuild Preddy. If the core crystal is undamaged (big IF) I think her personality could remain. Also, i suppose the rescuers will find (in the other ship) the crystal that Cavendish mentioned, the one grown in weeks, that could be so useful to the war. I am confident they will find Ferus's cane, so I imagine they could find that cristal too.

8 ) Valesco death was very satisfactory, and I hope someday we can have a satisfactory death for Cavendish too.

9) I was very sad about Ferus, a character I loved. But I understand that is the mentor's fate, in general.

10) Cavendish is Folly's mother!!??

11) Even when I understand why she did it, I am not too happy with Abigail risking Grimm's life. I liked Bayard's reaction and the fact that he did not immediately forgive her. I want them to reconcile and be happy with their baby but I feel the way it happened is more realistic and show Bayard's character. Also, I am afraid they will not have a happy ending. Anyways, I think Abigail could have try to show Bayard that even when she would do the same again she still regrets what she did to Grimm. For example, she could have offered to pay for Grimm's rehab with the best doctors. She is rich.

12) I loved that Espira is impressed with Grimm, he seems to respect him a great deal. I was looking forward to a scene with Grimm telling him "So, you slept with my wife..." and Espira blanching. And yes, we know they are exes (but not formally) and both of them have other partners but Espira would not know. Alas, that did not happen.

13) Last, and also Espira related. I seriously see no reason why he is not a prisoner in the end. I understood that his surviving men were allowed to march free, but I think he should have been Grimm's prisoner.

God in Heaven, that was super long. You have been warned though and I regret nothing. I expected so long for this I am enjoying it now :-)

I am seeing privacy warnings ("the connection is not private") all the time. with Chrome I have one every time I load a new page of the forum. With Edge I was able to do it only once, but it is quite annoying.
I hope this can be fixed!

DF Spoilers / dying curses
« on: June 25, 2023, 08:17:37 PM »
Someone else thinks that this plot device is wasted? In the first books it was mentioned a lot but then I think only the "die alone" and his effect in Harry's mind has been relevant. It seems a shame to not exploit it better.

DF Spoilers / Zoo day
« on: November 27, 2020, 07:25:54 PM »
Well, I finally bought Brief Cases and read Zoo day.

For all of you who know me and my feelings about Maggie, this won't be a surprise. I hated that story. A lot. And the WoJ before it made them even worse, with JB saying that Maggie was not in the original plan, that we had a chance of having a non-dad Dresden. Jeez, I would have loved it. But ey, at least I liked Mouse voice, even when he apparently does not know red but knows silver blue. I liked Mouse calling Harry "My Friend", capital letters.

And then, I was surprised to realize I was interested in Austin. I wish we see him again.

DF Spoilers / BG chapter 31 (Spoilers, obviously)
« on: November 25, 2020, 10:43:30 PM »
I think this chapter is a sample of the book itself, if you like it, you will like the book. If you like Butters, you will like it.
It is one of my favorite chapters in the book.

DF Spoilers / [BG spoilers!!] Revisiting the short story "Monsters"
« on: November 15, 2020, 05:26:45 AM »
I have made a post about this in another thread, but as apparently nobody read it I decided to do a new one. As the title says, I've reread Monsters after reading BG-

Viti says that Marcone is bad, is dangerous and he can kill Grey. I think now we know she was not talking about what we thought before, vanilla man doing extraordinary things but Denarian. And I found that very interesting. Also, apparently Grey cannot detect the Fallen in him

Oh, and just a comment. It is relatively easy to make the decision of saving children. As others stated here before, it's not such a great moral thing. I believe the interesting part is that while Grey or Marcone would probably go to some extremes to save children, Harry would probably go to great extremes to save any of them (Marcone and Grey, I mean). And I think in his inner heart Grey wants to be that sort of person, and he is trying. As always, Harry is probably going to influence him to go to that side. Marcone, on the other hand, seems to have decided to go the dark side. But, as I said before, I still see hope of redemption for him. And I still think Marcone himself hopes that, if he ever goes truly, truly dark, Harry will stop him.

DF Spoilers / [BG spoilers!!] A scene I would like to see
« on: November 08, 2020, 07:13:33 PM »
Just a random thought I had. I would like to see Marcone, who is always so controlled, under the direct influence of a whampire, if only for a few moments. It would be different and fun.

I am aware I don't have many chances to see it, because whampires would not attack the Baron of Chicago for no reason but...imagine that Denarian Marcone made a move against Harry, and Lara, forced to protect Harry's life, decided to protect him.

DF Spoilers / [BG spoilers!!] Margaret LeFay
« on: October 24, 2020, 10:55:45 PM »
Anyone else felt that in BG Vadderung purposedly stopped the conversation before the Erkling said something that he did not want Harry to know? Something about Maggie, of course.

DF Spoilers / [BG spoilers!!] Like the n_
« on: October 22, 2020, 04:56:25 AM »
So, in BG, when talking about soulgazes (for the first time in the novel, with the kraken) he said "If you see something bad enough, such as the n-" and then he adds "-something bad enough". What I am wondering is, what does he mean by "n-"? Naagloshii? It seems probable, as they are awful and Harry is afraid of them. But if that is the case, why not simply saying it? And why it is not N-, with capital letter? I think Naagloshii is always written with N.

So?? I can think a fitting word with n, necromancer, but I can't see Harry saying "the n-" instead of "a n-".

I'd like to read your comments on the subject.

DF Spoilers / [BG spoilers] The things in the armory
« on: October 21, 2020, 11:02:06 PM »
Well, we know what the placard and the Spear do but, what can the Thorny Crown and the Shroud do?

Marcone believed that the shroud could heal a comatose girl, so...could it have cured Murphy? Could it heal a nemfection? Could it heal Thomas now? I am sure using it would not be free but if there is a chance to help Thomas I am sure Harry will do it.

DF Spoilers / [BG spoilers!!] After rereading PT
« on: October 19, 2020, 10:39:32 PM »
There is a couple  of things I want to comment about PT but they may involve BG spoilers, so be careful.

In the fight Eb-fake Harry, Eb throw a big mass of stones to the water beetle. If he had succeeded in hitting it, there is a chance that Murphy died? Would it have counted as killing humans with magic?
(I am sure Eb really thought he would just break the boat and that if Murphy needed help he would have been able to help but my question is hypothetical.)

After the first appearance of Ethniu, when everyone is talking about what they will do to contribute to the fight, Sarissa's contribution is saying that she will coordinate communications using the Little Folk. And she even suggested working in the roof. But that confuses me because I thought the little folk were wild, not Summer vassals, and because it seems to reduce the importance of what Harry did with his pizzas. Everyone felt the same?

Murphy was only 4 years away of taking off the plaster so it is not that bad that he did. And the point she moves quite well except for the pain. Of course, by quite well I mean she still has her problems she is still injured and would have need physiotherapy. But I mean that she was not tripping or having trouble staying on her foot. With that in mind, it makes sense like when in BG her pain was taken away she would act more or less like the old Murphy (but she would have been unable of having a martial arts hand to hand combat, if she had tried).

Since the beginning, the Titan dismissed Marcone because he is a mortal so, can't she felt the Fallen in him until he revealed himself?
