DF Spoilers / Re: Beowulf-Venatores
« on: August 14, 2021, 08:52:23 AM »
It could also just be because the more people know about you the more they can prepare for your actions. If you know he is Vadderung, head of a cooperation then you have almost nothing to prepare you. If you know he is Odin you know he problably got a spear and is good with magic and planning. So you figure that cathing him unarmed and alone with a big monster is a sure bet. But then it turns out he is also Beowulf who won a naked wrestling competition against a large monster by ripping off it's limbs. If you had know you would probably not have entered into that wrestling competition.

Another example is that if you know he is also Zeus (my guess) then you would also prepare for lightning. If you know he is also Santa you would not attack him close to Christmas.

But of course there could be more to it.

DF Spoilers / Re: What will Eb do?

I still think the simplest explanation is that pappa wraith on a full tank is extremely tough. Yes a large caliber bullet to the head would (perhaps) kill the other WC vampires, but I think they are also in a totally different weight class than him. If Lara is from around 1700 and he is from around year 0 then he is six times older. Maybe Eb did drop a satelite on him, but it did not kill him. Or maybe he tried to drop a satelite on him but his super hearing picked it up and he was so fast that he could run away in time? If he could rip the life force from someone with a kiss maybe Goodman Grey would not have fared so well. Maybe when he was with a full tank he did not have to settle for mortal dominated henchmen, he could have had his own dominated pet shapeshifter (or something else)

The simplest explanation as to why someone lives for 2000 years with a lot of enemies is that they are very hard to kill. I cannot imagine that Eb is the first one he pissed off.

DF Spoilers / Re: Damn, Maeve really did win
« on: August 02, 2021, 11:17:59 AM »
I disagree

Whither would my mantle go? Where is the nearest
vessel now? Some hapless mortal, perhaps,
ignorant of its true nature? The instrument of
some foe of yours, in alliance with me, ready to
steal away the mantle and leave you vulnerable?”
Maeve giggled. “I can play chess too, Mother.
Better now than ever you could. And I am now less
a liability to you alive than dead.”

Molly is not some clueless mortal, she was a pretty good candidate and Maeve was more of a liability to Mab alive than dead, which is why Mab killed her (via Murph).

I do not think the outsiders trusted Maeve enough to tell her that Justine was infected.

Cinder Spires Books / Re: Cinder Spire - Kid friendly?

In case others are reading. there is some magical torture i would not consider kid friendly and good guy civilians dying onscreen.

I guess it depends on the age and kid but I would not call it kid friendly.

DF Spoilers / Re: how Harry could beat Carlos, Eb, and others
« on: June 25, 2021, 10:35:51 PM »
It would be one member of the accords attacking another. I don't see how the mortal world becomes part of it.
If Marcone decided to attack winter i can't see summer siding with him either.

So we have the lightning/Gungnir  that points from Odin to Zeus. I think it means more because it is something he pulled out when he was under pressure.
There is also the company logo which was made up of Greek letters, but I cannot remember which. The one that Dresden concluded meant every last detail (among other things).

Is there anything else that neither fits Odin nor Kringle?

That his way is made from green lightning? Or am I mixing things?

But if that was the case, would there not have been some sort of reaction targeting Harry also?
A wounded look, not being in a joking mood, something?

DF Spoilers / Re: Erlking's purpose?

Below is all the WOJ on the faerie kings.

(click to show/hide)

So it changes quite a bit from 2010 to 2014, perhaps the truth in the Dresdenverse is somewhere in between.

Where are the Farie kings?  Do they exist?
Yes they do.  The Erlking as sort of the Hunter king, and Santa Clause, the Winter king who is not the commercial Santa Clause.  The kings are sort of the opposite of the queens in their given season.  They are independent of their Queen’s courts.  The Erlking is a summer king and he is not a particularly friendly guy, whereas Santa Clause, one of the winter kings, is kinder, the spirit of generosity in a time of bleakness.  Yah I’ve gota have Harry ask Mab about him so she can roll her eyes.

Is The Erlking a mantle in the same way as the other Fae titles? I know he’s referred to as Herne at one point in Cold Days, so that got me thinking, considering that he’s also iirc the Summer King.
There is no such thing as a Summer King in the Dresden Files faerie cosmology. Mab and Titania need a King like a fish needs a bicycle. :)
There are a ton of independent rulers of the Wyld, though, much like the Erlking, who is a member of the Winter Court more or less as a sign of courtesy and respect. They will occasionally make alliances (and dalliances) with the great rulers of the Sidhe.

Perhaps the answer is that the Erlking is a fae king related to the summer court, but not the summer king.

It did not really find anything about his function though.

I just found this WOJ:

"Quote from: Warden John Marcone on March 04, 2009, 05:48:02 PM
I’m still curious about who could hurt Mab.  Other than Titania, nobody comes to mind.

Hmmm.  In terms of pure, raw power, several who have appeared or been mentioned in the books could pull it off, though neither side would really “win” as much as “continue to exist.”  Plus, the sudden absence of Mab would do freaking HIDEOUS things to the earth.  But here’s who has the necessary horsepower do it:

o   Titania–though it would be a coin toss.  Almost literally.
o   The Mothers (who wouldn’t)
o   The White Council.  As in, ALL the White Council.  Every wizard on the planet.  And they’d need her Name.
o   Drakul.
o   Ferrovax.
o   The Red Court–again, ALL the Red Court, though their odds wouldn’t be good.
o   The entire White Court–very, very long odds on that, but if they actually pulled it off, whoever took Mab would effectively control her power.
o   Cowl (if the Darkhallow had succeeded).
o   A union of the old Elders of the Black Court.  They were freaking scary until the Whites arranged to have them hounded down by mortals.

All of that, of course, assumes that Mab is standing there alone, outside of Faerie, and not commanding an entire nation, literally millions and millions and millions of nightmarish creatures of every description.  Which she does.

There’s a REASON that when Mab said, “Sign these Accords and abide by them,” people listened. :)"

Of course it is not a given, but I think it underlines my answer from above that since Ethniu could take on Titania, Odin and the Erlking at once, she could also have beaten god-Cowl.

71
I also think it is very unlikely that Odin and the other planned to loose. But I do think it is very likely that he considered the risk of loosing and planned for mitigating the results of it.

The risk was quite high, Ethniu could have killed them with the eye when it was done recharging.

I think it is impossible to guess what Ethnius power level would be without the armor, so I will only consider it with the armor.

I don't think that god cowl would have been able to beat Odin, Titania (at mid summer no less) and the Erlking at once. I don't even think he would have had a good chance. So * would say he would be personally weaker.

But naturally a smart bad guy is often more dangerous than a powerful one outside of a fight.

But of god cowl had tried to do something similar to what Ethniu did the leaders of the accorded nations would have just killed him. As far as I could tell the main reason they were concerned with ganging up on Ethniu was that she would kill them with the eye. So someone had to take the first shot(s).

DF Spoilers / What is your favorite part and why?
« on: June 07, 2021, 10:36:03 PM »
So some time after I started reading these forums I realized that some (many?) People read parts of books that they like. I have always just read the entire book, and usually the entire series from one end to the other every time I re-read.

So especially for those of you who sometimes only rereads a part of the book(s) what are your favorite scenes/sections etc. And why?

Please indicate book and chapter (if possible) so it is easy for the rest of us to find and share your joy :-)

It could also be that he had some hunch about how important the events at that party would be for the world.

DF Spoilers / Re: Marcone/Namshiel, It Seems Weird to Me...

I guess a lot of it depends on
Is Namshiel and Nick enemies?
Was Namshiel part of the attack on Artist Tor?

Did someone already conclude on those two?

Regarding Butters being able to threaten Harry

Harry is allmost incapable of backing off because someone dangereous tells him to do so and threatens with physical violence. Who has done something along those lines? Ferrovax at Biancas party sort of did it, but he was not really standing between Harry and anything Harry wanted, except maybe Harry's wish to make fun of others (as I remember it). Odin did something a bit like it when Harry wanted him to stay and he did not have time. Maybe the most apt comparison is when Harry starts badmouthing Hades family and Hades tells him to stop. As I remember the scene Harry stops because he recognises it is impolite, but also because he recognises that Hades is a really dangerous god. These are the sort of really dangerous "people" Harry respects/fears enough to not make fun of. But if Harry thought the right thing to do would be to stop what "they had going on" I think he would try. Some of the very dangerous "people" he does not stop making fun off includes Hugin and Mugin. Someone he does not shy away from screwing things up for when he thinks it is the right thing to do is the Blackstaff. Just to pick two examples from BG.

So to me, it is clear that Harry does not refrain from making a joke or from stopping what Butters has going on because of Butters "sincere willingness to commit violence" and ability to do that, because that would make Harry think Butters is more dangerous than pretty much every villain in the series untill now which would be ridiculous.

As a result I read it as Harry is impressed that Butters can make that sort of statement in that way and happy that his friend has grown. He respects him as a person and thinks they are all mature people who seems to have found some love, boink and let boink as he puts it in the park with Titania, so he has no reason for screw it up for him.

So of course Butters can sincerely threaten Harry with physical violence, it is just that it does not have any effect on what Harry does after that other than it has conveyed a sincere wish from a friend to not do something.

Similarly, when Butters stops Harry in his berserker rage it is by the angel and perhaps to some degrees Butters crying (obviously not Butters) snapping Harry out of it. It is not that the burn on his arm was physically significant.

I would say the butters plotline started when Butters stopped cassius from killing Harry in book 5.
