DF Books / Re: new tv series in development
« on: November 21, 2019, 04:18:02 AM »
I personally would prefer the novel-per-season format (and while we're at it... let's put in all the shorts and the graphic novels (that aren't adapted-novel stories):  extra buffers before we need to force-feed caffeine to Jim in order to increase his productivity!).

And you're right, of course!  1 novel per season would give Jim ample time to finish the Dresden Files (& likely even the BAT)!

But it needs to fit within the TV-episode format.  AFAIK, that means each episode either needs to end on a cliffhanger or Big Reveal... or it needs to end on some satisfying conclusion-of-arc or other good "resting place."  A TV episode can't just end on any-old-chapter-ending; some work for TV, many don't.

Also, there's quite a bit more content in some novels than others...  If Storm Front can legitimately be a full season, what about Proven Guilty, or Changes, or...

I would not prefer that for multiple reasons. 1. there's no chance they would survive a 20 year run and I'd like to see them make the whole series. 2. I don't think that the earlier books could really support an entire season, even the shorter seasons that the streaming services prefer (10 to 13 episodes)

I think Storm Front through Grave Peril would be an ideal season 1. Summer Knight through Blood Rites for season 2. Dead Beat and Proven Guilty for Season 3. White Knight and Small Favor for Season 4 (ending with Morgan knocking on the door asking for help for the season finale). Turn Coat and Changes for Season 5. Ghost Story and Cold Days for Season 6. Skin Game and Peace Talks for Season 7. 2 books a season gets to 20 by the end of season 9 and then it's the end of a series and BAT can be movies. That gives Jim Butcher 9 years to finish the last four series novels and they can do the BAT on whatever schedule they want.

I'd second Mercy Thompson series and would also recommend the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire. Nothing compares to DF but both are good

DF Spoilers / Re: Exposure to Magic?
« on: April 26, 2019, 04:03:22 PM »
Also, jumping back to Harry Carpenter, there isn't anything that says he isn't magical. I believe it tends to manifest during puberty and he's only just reaching age 13 as of Skin Game. His talents could manifest during Peace Talks or not at all, or they could have started to manifest and he hasn't told anyone yet. The point is we don't know yet that he isn't a magic user.

I might be mistaken, but I thought that the Fomor were technically not signed on to the accords since they were mostly a conglomeration of remnants from former powers. I think they contact a member of the accords in an effort to sign on as signatories, while their true motives are to cut the heads off of as many powers as possible.

« on: April 19, 2019, 03:59:47 PM »
in response to why Harry would do that, it could have to do with things that happened that bonnie needs to have first hand knowledge of, gained from being in his head. And there's no reason it would come up unless Harry has the same revelation and gets a chance to ask Bob about it. That being said, he's had similar musings about things he needs to ask Bob about that we never seem him ask about.

I also wouldn't be surprised if Eb "dies" in this book, via the Blackstaff returning to Mother Winter. Then we see the emotional toll on Harry, but Eb isn't actually dead. Instead now working in the background as a spy for Mother Winter as repayment for Eb using her walking stick for so long.

DF Spoilers / Re: Another Cowl Theory

Cowl could also be Eb. It's possible that the only reason Harry didn't die in that duel is that Cowl (Eb) just didn't want to kill him.

DF Spoilers / Re: Angelic intervention in Fool Moon

Jumping ahead of the conversation about lies, and back to the initial post, I do think it could be Uriel or one of his agents, and I think Harry’s father is one of them. Ghost story makes it clear that the only balance for “the other side” telling him 7 words was that Uriel got to also put 7 words in his head. The entire out of body experience was voluntary. There’s nothing in there that says there haven’t been other cases where something whispered things in his head to be balanced. I’m not sure if it’s been discussed, but to reference my earlier point about Malcolm, the reason I think he’s working for Uriel’s office is that he shows up right after Shiela does and says that it’s because the other side broke the rules.

I'll just add a thought about Eb being infected.

In my mind, more than a few of those infected with Nemesis have tried to infect him, but, because he's starborn, he's immune.

Just a theory.

"As of April 1st, 2019, the current draft of the novel is up to chapter 54, and that’s NOT an April Fool. Progress!  We don’t have a release date yet, but we’ll update this page, send out a newsletter, and tweet it to the high heavens the moment we do!"

My speculation is feeling pretty dead on..

This is all my speculation, but based on the last few books and how much longer each has been than the previous I'd guess this is a 55-60 chapter book, and he seems to be working at a pace of about a chapter a week so we should only be a month or two from a finished draft.

I had started with Dead Beat because it was the end display I saw when I discovered the series, but I'd recommend just starting with Storm front and reading in order.

DF Books / Pennywise the phobophage
« on: May 28, 2018, 01:03:03 PM »
Just finished watching IT, and realized that the main baddie in the movie is a being that returns to this plane every 27 years to steal children and feed off their fear. Hadn’t ever read the book or seen the original, but was this part of Jim’s inspiration for the phobophages in proven guilty? Has there been a WOJ where he was asked about it? I know he pulls the backing mythology from a lot of places, but it seems like the type of mainstream pop culture reference he would use.
