DF Spoilers / Re: LC and the Outer Gates

The main reason I think it was obscured intentionally is the similar way he described the memory of his blasting rod being taken. It was like a tarp thrown over something in the corner of his mind.

Mr. Death, I appreicate the clarification.

Ms. Skylark,  (please forgive any misgendering)
I did not state nor imply that a soul is required to manipulate magical forces.

However, secondarily and separately, I do postulate that a soul is required for a mortal to do so. The twin sides of Hellfire and Soulfire seem to imply that a soul can be used for magic. Heck dresden as a soul used himself to fuel his spells in GS, and we know he was nothing but soul.

My apologies for being unclear. I meant in regards to the comparison of Lil Harry vs Molly in utero by Mr. Death. The specific statement that Molly was regularly exposed to magic throughout the pregnancy. My statement did allow for potential holdover from her former lifestyle.

My personal theory is that a gentic component is needed as well at least one the parents having used magic enough that it is part of their soul. The souls mingle during sex, per Bob and Thomas, and sex can create a new soul. So if a soul involved in creating the new one has magic in the mix, it shows in the offspring if the necessary genetic component is present. Which might explain the need for time to lose one's Talent; more along the lines of the body recreating its cells over seven years and less like erosion.

My books are packed (moving in a week) so I can't check. My recollection is that Charity swore off magic the day she met Michael. Michael doesn't seem the type to have premarital sex. So I doubt Charity performed any magic while pregnant. There may have been some lingering in her blood from the lifestyle she had been living, but I don't recall her using magic while with Michael.

DF Spoilers / Way too much time to think
« on: April 02, 2019, 06:48:21 PM »
Here’s a note that I wrote a couple years ago, that I completely forgot about. But Serack’s theory ties in perfectly. So I went ahunting. It’s a little all over the yard and free form, so pls ask any questions.

Here’s the note:

I wanted to let this theory bake a little before I expanded upon it. I think most religions were created to help save the universe from Outsiders. Before existence there was nothing but the outside. Then one of the denizens of that nothing created something within themselves, using choice as the engine that drives creation against nonexistence. Thus is born the Inside. Outsiders wish to return to the stasis that predates reality.

If, as some anthropologists believe, religion started as nature worship which evolved into ancestor worship, which evolved into polytheism, which evolved into monotheism, in the DV people's belief would be changing the heavens based on choices. Kind of a reverse thaumaturgy; as below, so above. I do not think the prime mover is limited by these mental paradigms as much as it can only interact via them or it risks removing choice which eliminates possible realities. Anything Outside that comes in loses power and becomes more like the inside therefore is more susceptible to reality, specifically choice. In the DV belief and choice have the power to shape reality.  When The Creator made light and hence the first day, it also produced differences or choices. Since mankind has free will, mankind affects reality, we affect the Maker. Assuming there is a Creator/Brahma/Unmoved Mover that built our existence against that which is and always was nonexistence (Inside vs Outside), then belief would shape the perception of it. And since observation changes both observer and observed, it would stand to reason in the DV that belief in natural gods would shape/create them. Then as interaction increased they became more human, less of the natural order. The same will hold true of Outsiders.

Over the years they have attempted to muddy each Starborn's message, to lead to division. I think a lot of major religion figures are Starborn. The ones that seem obvious, to me, are Rama, Buddha, TWC and the Prophet Muhammad. All four fought demons before gaining understanding.

Hinduism's many gods could have been the beginning of putting all of these manmade gods (or aspects of a singular Creator) into a single pantheon with the aim of protecting existence. Over time certain gods gain prominence and the accompanying power. This seeds the idea of a single all powerful god or state of being that is all existence. This is expressed further with the Buddha.

Simultaneously Egypt is building pyramids and shifting from many various gods to a focus on a supreme god with a representative on earth. Sumeria is creating cuneiform and writing epics of half god men that shaped the world.

The Romans moving from small household gods to the Greek pantheon also fits with the many disparate gods joining. Across the globe we see a consolidation of many into few.

This aspect makes a covenant with Abraham, starting a unifying belief further consolidating power. However, it is limited to a single tribe. TWC allows it to reach beyond the children of Israel. The Prophet Muhammad is the last Prophet of TWG and continues the work of Solomon, David, Moses, and TWC warning if the war with Outsiders.

I find myself drawn to the 2 creation stories in Genesis. The first creates existence the second wizards. Adams and Eve according to some scholars are only 20 generations removed from Abraham. The original number of DF. Anyhoo.

All religions touch upon the true divine. There is only one Outside and there may as well be only one Outsider with infinite faces and power levels. . Since none of its agents have free will they are inherently of one mind.  No possible defiance. This is the difference that was first created  with the introduction of light and time and choice, all simultaneously in the initial moment of creation.

Most religions have a something from nothing creation story. Nemesis wishes to return to nothing. This is reflected in the many prophecies about an end time battle. Nemesis does all it can to shift the blame to in universe bad guys. Kinda forcing the Love vs Hate issue so that Apathy can win.

Nemesis is going to attempt to corrupt any and every system of belief. Religion, government, art, philosophy, even love all stand to further the cause of creation. The more people choose to "not choose" the less the DV grows.

DF Spoilers / Re: How many humans has Harry killed with magic? 4+?
« on: March 17, 2019, 11:48:57 PM »
Yeah but why should Harry feel bad about it?  He might not like using magic for that purpose but I'm pretty sure it's something he can live with considering the alternative.
Because not caring is what makes you a monster. Remember his conversation with Micheal. Monsters don't care. Sure, Harry said he'd do it twice as hard, but feeling remorse, concern, and regretting the necessity of your actions are the mark of a good person.

To your earlier question about a cop feeling bad about using lethal force, that is answered directly in the series. Murphy is wrecked by killing Denton. She knew it was the right thing to do and it still left her spirit broken. She brings this up when Harry is losing sleep about killing Corspetaker in cold blood. Just because an action save lives, it still cost one and that decision should never be an easy one. Or you're on the road to being a monster.

Don't even have to get into the effects of dark magic. That action affects everyone with free will in the DV.

DF Spoilers / Re: Could Mavra be under Eb's control?
« on: June 17, 2018, 10:32:07 PM »
I keep thinking the Circle is actually Anti-Outsider. I see it as similar to the group that Maggie Sr. invited Eb to dinner to meet. You had a member of the White Court, Red Court and White Council confirmed. Arianna recognized the danger that her mad King put reality in and acted against him. Lord Raith was trying to get in on the Starborn action this time around. I expect that a KotBD(given Nic's reaction to Hellfire at AT and the saint line) was there too, maybe Mavra (a MM ally)as well. A group of people with power that have a vested interest in keeping reality and humanity going. But that group would allow very different sacrifices for that end than our Grey Council.

Well, if we circle back to DB, we get to see a justification of "black magic" used to preserve life by Kumori, who is directly attached to Cowl, who is part of the Circle. That doesn't, in any way, rule out the Black Council being the in universe front for the the Outsiders. But it could indicate that members of the organization are capable of being turned. If Kumori were smacked in the face with proof that her noble goal of ending death would actually ruin existence, she might leave the Black Council or turn double agent. Combined with Nic's "One day" remark about being a Saint, I think it is entirely possible the end goals of the Black Council are EVIL, but they have deceived members with false hopes and impossible utopias.

I wanna see the Blackstaff cut loose. I wanna see him throwing cannon fodder around like a Sith at a padawan store. I want gravity wells that make portal seems simplistic and shotgun blasts of mordite pellets. I wanna see Harry feel like he failed his Grandfather as his death curse crushes a horde of Fomor. I wanna see all that and know it wasn't enough. That the first 15 books were just an opening gambit.

I was just listening to Turn Coat and Lara Raith had a rather interesting choker with a blood red ruby in it. Perhaps similar to the one Harry got in Changes? I don't recall her wearing that before, so it seems to be part of her combat attire.

Or it could be the one Papa Wraith had in his ear when we first met him.

Sharkface's reaction seemed less in line with meeting a remnant of TWG. I would expect more victory or gloating, less annoyance. Plus Mab's interaction with him on the island. And the whole "I'm out," thing doesn't seem possible for TWG since it is everything. IDK.

I agree. I think TTHarry fixed/ LC. He meets all the criteria for someone to able to fix it and PG is rife with TT explanations and pointed out "inconsistencies."

I certainly fall in the Stable Time Loop Camp. I don't think the TT will go beyond the scope of the case files for a few reasons. The first being that traveling through time is difficult and the more time you wish to cover the more energy it would take as per CD. Secondly, I think there is WoJ that Harry will break all the Laws of Magic before the BAT. I assume it will be similar the way he has broken the others, (technically, i.e. Raising Sue, Molly's mind in GS, etc) Thirdly, with Harry fulfilling more Starborn attributes he is becoming more a fulcrum thus making affecting Harry the best way to affect outcomes. Lastly, fixing all the story lines by adding prequels, in essence, feels sloppy and cheap. This series has a structure and I have enjoyed uncovering it.

I would be fine with a Quantum Leap style with either TTHarry being inside Past Harry or maybe helpful janitors in train stations. Esp with Bonnie as his Ziggy being able to remember everything from Harry's memory.

DF Spoilers / Re: Call for help
« on: April 05, 2018, 12:53:44 AM »
I find the descriptors of Starborn a better jumping off point. We know that multiple things must align, circumstances as well as time to produce a Starborn. We know that a Starborn has the potential to wield power over Outsiders. Harry has been referred to a fulcrum many times. I think a Starborn is a person who will make a decision or a lifetime of decisions that affect the continuation of the DV. I think the redeemed parent and one good parent is an important aspects as it allows the child to have a little of both within it with both serving as avatars for the Outsiders and Insider. Everything is vulnerable to something that is of itself. Making the Starborn a double edged sword. The Inside can't subjugate Free Will as that limits existence, whereas the Outside cares not if the world perishes in Fire or Ice as long as it perishes. Starborn gets faced with choices that count as a proxy vote for reality. A Starborn would exist in all DF realities but wouldn't have to be the same person, just the person that will face those choices.
