So I think I found out a way around the block that's been holding me up for months.... well the block plus procrastination. But I'm in the process of changing my story from Third Person limited to First person. Once I eliminated the non-main chapters and changed a few things around it is starting to fall into place. Although at 14000 words it's still daunting to go through and change. I'm about a third of the way through... but it should make writing the rest of the story much easier. I hope.

Author Craft / Re: Factions - realistic or unrealistic?

So uh I know I'm kind of necroing a topic and I apologize but I just started reading the first Bloodhound Files book and I am liking it ok, except the main character keeps identifying people as werewolves and then later as Vampires and vice versa... is that some kind of unreliable narrator thing or just a mistake? On the train near the beginning in Japan she identifies the detective as a Japanese Vampire and then a few pages later describes his wolf form. I thought I was confusing characters but I checked and it's definitely there.

That's pretty awesome. It's always nice to get some constructive criticism no matter the source and the fact that they threw it in a review is nice. Congrats!

I'm betting that Maeve's orders to the knights mostly centered around killing people... Since we know she hasn't been doing her proper job for a while from her "I will never again be your little hunting falcon" jab at Mab I think she'd been perverting the winter Lady and Winter Knight gig for a while know. Be interesting to see more of what the Winter Lady's true role is in helping to hold off Armageddon. Might have to wait a book or two though.

I'm just saying agents of Summer and agents of Winter both show up in one place and you think its a coincidence?

And Maeve/Nemesis and or Titania knew that how?

Question it raises for me, though; if Nemesis-through-Namshiel is working towards entrapping and infecting the Archive, what's Nemesis-through-Maeve's motive in sending in the hobs ?  Crossed wires or variant motives among the Nemesis hosts seems to run counter to what we are told in CD about the nature of Outsiders.

If you want the Archive to stop trusting Harry how would you do it? Nemesis/Maeve sends the Hobs right as Harry shows up and Harry is the winter emissary. Doesn't the Hob attack feel more like a mortal underestimating the Archive than Mab or Maeve underestimating her? Nevermind the other people there, there was no chance of that attack doing anything other than making the people there question Winter's motives. Heck maybe the reason Tiny showed up when he did was so that Harry wouldn't reach the archive at the inappropriate time?

Winter creatures acting to help the coming darkness is an ongoing theme throughout several of the books and all of it has created is tension between Mab and potential allies. Which also makes me kind of wonder if the spiders in Turncoat were there on orders from Maeve as well helping the BC/Nemesis allies on the island.

I think if Maggie had anything it died off like the Jaguar men who were half vamps. They had lived a long long time though so when the spirit holding them up died they aged alot in a short time and died. Maggie is young and wasn't being kept alive by the predator spirit or whatever so she wasn't impacted by its removal. It's probably why she was asleep though.

Thanks Neuro. You are one of the posters around here I really respect even if I don't always agree. I haven't read the Felix Castor series but I'll have to look into it. Ditto on Thirteen Bullets.

Author Craft / Masquerade, Broken Masquerade or alternate universe?
« on: December 07, 2012, 08:35:39 AM »
Still mentally blocked from writing on my main story and to keep myself from re-writing parts I've already finished I want to start a new project. I've got what to me sounds like a solid set of guidelines and conflicts but I can't decide on placement.

Masquerade - hidden world right alongside modern day earth
Broken Masquerade - hidden world has been exposed or gets exposed
Alternate Universe/world - A world like ours but with the different being magic or whatever.

I'm hesitant to use the masquerade type story partially because its been done so much but partially because I feel like its getting harder and harder to justify why someone wouldn't find out about the world or why it would be secret. Also if you keep everything hidden there is only so much damage you can cause and things you can change before it becomes silly if people don't notice.

What say you all about the options? What have you seen too often or too recently? How do you feel about them? Just trying to get some ideas that aren't my own...

yeah I know... two twelve hour overnight shifts at work this weekend should be the perfect way to do that... but I've only got about an hour left of tonight's shift and I've done everything to procrastinate that I can think of including some actual work... heh but man the hardest thing about coming back to it is that in reading the first chapters again I hate it and want to change it all.

I've done that before and I'm not eager to rewrite all that again especially knowing that's the wrong way to go if I ever want to finish. But I do hate it especially seeing all the flaws I had going through it last time. Just gotta push through...

So I haven't touched my story since early July... I know I need to start back on it but I'm just not feeling it. Ugh... time to get inspired again.

Actually he tried to use the sight on an angel in GS... not soulgaze. Different and distinct actions.

I banged out a timeline tonight covering roughly 3000 years of history and major conflicts and shifts in political power. Its not anything I'd ever publish or add anywhere but it's helping me get a handle on the backstory of the countries and the motivations of the major players.

I might have missed my calling as a short story author... I'm constantly fighting the urge to wrap everything up in like 10 pages.
