DF Spoilers / Re: "Good People" Verses "Christmas Eve" Mab
« on: December 29, 2020, 12:05:03 AM »
I think the alliance is a good enough explanation. Molly and Harry don’t like it, prefer another solution and might find one but they do not deny the logic of it either.

Mab has twice brought up that Molly would not be able to handle [Mab’s] Mantle. I think Mab wants Lara to marry Harry so that there’s enough Winter about her that Mab’s Mantle could choose Lara instead of Molly in the event of Mab’s death. In the same way that training with Leah allowed Molly to become Winter Lady. And Lara is is much more in line with Mab’s way of operating than Molly- already used to nigh-immortality, predatory mindset offset by control and planning.

So yeah, that’s why I think Mab’s pushing (or agreed to it if it was Lara’s suggestion) the arrangement. But I’m not sure Lara is in on that part or not.

You are correct, Mirror Mirror is no longer the next book. Jim has mentioned it in a couple interviews I believe.

I think Mab is a character that evolves.  When Molly talks about her talk with Harry, she is also talking about her visit to her folks..  So the confrontation still may have happened before Mab took Harry the present.  But back to Mab, she isn't one dimensional, and will, I think turn out to be a lot more complicated than we think.  We start off like Harry, thinking she is merely evil, but as time goes on and understand her more, not so much, more like doing a very difficult job that has to be done.   Though I am not sure why she thinks she has to marry Harry off to Lara.

I think she’s angling Lara as her own replacement.

DF Spoilers / Re: Ebenezar and Harry (peace talks spoilers)

To piggyback off this, we can also draw similarities between the last fight with Eb, and Harry's fight with Cat Sith from Cold Days. In Cold Days, when Cat Sith is himself he isn't seen. He takes down the enemy and drags them off to die horribly and silently. When he's been Nemfected, he's a drama queen. He puts up a post-it saying "look behind you" so he can make a dramatic entrance. We see similar from Eb in Peace Talks. Instead of the "KABOOM YOU'RE DEAD!" style of Blackstaffery, we see him confront Dresden from atop a floating rock. Granted, confronting Harry instead of killing him is something I could understand, given the levels of protectiveness we've seen from him. But... a floating rock? Really? Maybe it was faster than running? I don't know. But, why not eliminate the horrible monster vampires before confronting Harry and asking for answers? That seems more his style from what we've seen. And, speaking from a meta perspective, it would have driven a wedge between the two of them harder than anything that will come out of what we were given. What was in the book comes off - to me, at least - as the same vein of drama queen-hood we see from Cat Sith.

But than, I'm a paranoid lunatic who's been wondering when Murphy would turn on Harry ever since that dream in Skin Game. I could be seeing connections where there aren't any.

I think the discrepancy here is as simple as Eb not wanting to kill Harry, or even hurt him too badly. There’s a big difference between executing vampires and their goons, and fighting his own grandson (and really, more like fighting to get by his grandson while setting his sights on a different target).

I thought the deal was with Lea?  Also Jim has said in the past that what she did was merely confidence building and no power per say, I also thought that the reason why he was declared a warlock was because he killed with magic when he killed Justin.

I think Jim was referring obliquely to Harry becoming Winter Knight (the guy interviewing him had just finished White Night, so Jim was being a little bit carful about spoilers for him)- he did specifically mention Mab, not Lea.

The Wizard/Warlock/Sorcerer mentions in regards to Harry were about what class of character he would be if you tried to make him in Dungeons and Dragons. Jim’s point was that he uses the above terms differently in his works than they’re used in D&D.

This is out of universe stuff, the Daniel I mentioned is the name of the person interviewing Jim, not Daniel Carpenter FYI. Sorry if that was confusing.

I watched that interview too, Daniel was specifically asking about Harry in terms of D&D Wizards. In D&D Wizards get their magic by studying, Sorcerers are just born with it (mostly). Jim clarified that in the Dresden Files Wizards are a bit of a combination of the two- a wizard has to be born with the potential to use magic on a certain level, as well as learn how to use magic etc.

He also mentioned that in D&D terms Harry would be a Warlock because of his deal with Mab. D&D Warlocks get their powers by making a deal with some powerful entity- they’re not just dark magic users like in the Dresden Files.

While I don’t necessarily disagree that Harry might have some powerful or exotic ancestry, I don’t think this quote is the evidence of it.

Isn't that the part where they turn the ships into ice sleds and shoot across the Wall? I don't think they bring the ice barges then- pretty sure those were for all the extra Canim they brought back to Alera. But it's been a while since my last Alera reread.

DF Spoilers / Re: Reddit Functionality
« on: July 19, 2018, 02:04:24 PM »
I just wanted you guys to know that Reddit recently upgraded their user interface. So, it is much easier and neater to communicate on that board there.

This is a link to the DresdenFiles subreddit there.  It is a good one.  There is also a You Tube channel linked to the Subreddit and a Discord server also.
https://www.reddit.com/r/dresdenfiles/

I still don't like it. I'll never understand Reddit, it is and has always been, just a worse (harder to read/follow) version of forums and its success is a matter of serious frustration to me.

The person who posted this q&a confirms in the comments that this was recorded I 2017, it just took them a while to edit it or something.

Really. I would love a link link, please.

The interview link was in this thread, and Raidem helpfully added some highlights:

Not that I think this will happen, but when I read "humanity's ancient enemy" I thought of the Vord.  Then I thought of an eventual crossover with Alera.  Oh, let me tell you.  For a few moments, the visions in my mind were glorious. ;D

Cinder Spires Books / Kindle Edition?
« on: February 20, 2015, 05:24:06 PM »
I was trying to preorder through the store, but the link only goes to a hardcover, and when I searched for Cinder Spires on my kindle it seems to come up with a German edition but nothing else.  Has anybody heard anything about this?  Is the English Kindle version just not ready yet?

Cinder Spires Books / Re: Steam punk? What happened to Sci Fi?
« on: July 21, 2014, 05:13:51 PM »
So I'm pretty confused at the moment and I'm hoping I can get some clarification here. The last I heard of Cinder Spires (about 2-3 years ago) it was going to be a science fiction series about a group of people who were trying to keep aliens under wraps because the alien government declared illegal for extra terrestrials to visit earth, and thus all the aliens who DID visit earth were typically criminals intent on causing problems.

Fast forward to now, and suddenly I'm hearing talk of steam punk and airships. While I'm by no means complaining (I love me some steam punk) I do have to wonder what happened to the Sci fi series that was talked about.

As I recall, that one was called something like U.S. Marshalls.  I guess it didn't pan out?
