Seems like a fun little tip o' the hat. Not like naming your werewolf Remus Lupin or anything.

I've waited a long time to be able to post here! I just got an offer yesterday for a publishing contract!

I'll add more details as soon as I get them, including my name of course...but I just wanted to share the exciting news!

Jealousy triggered...

Congratulations. Truthfully, congratulations.

Still jealous tho...

Just don't let D&D from GoT get a hold of it.

Hey everyone. "No More Devils", Book Two in the Superstition Bay Visits, is live on Amazon and free to read if you have Kindle Unlimited. I'd love to get some feedback, so anyone who wants to check it out is welcome!

Started another manuscript, but time's been short lately. I'm struggling to find time to start that 4th chapter.

"Swim Like Hell: A Visit to Superstition Bay", the first novel I've decided to publish, is now live on Amazon. It's the first in a planned series (the second is finished, and after I've hammered out some formatting details I'll have that one ready to go, too). It's an urban fantasy story set in a small Louisiana town whose population is, well, unusual. I'd be honored if anyone felt like checking it out. Thanks!

Finally got my first book up on Amazon: "Swim Like Hell: A Visit to Superstition Bay". It was a long journey, with lots of false starts, but the step has finally been taken and I couldn't be more relieved. Now let's see where it goes. The second Superstition Bay manuscript should be up in a week or so.

Am I allowed to post links here, or is that a no-no?

Royalties? Professional author?

*starts humming "Somewhere" from West Side Story.

That'd be a dream come true for me. Like many Dresdenites, I do urban fantasy.

My actual writing is on pause. I have a manuscript I'm looking to put up on Amazon soon and another soon after that. Soon I'll get to working on the third.

Here's a question for all... why do I feel so shy about my writing?

Of everyone I know, a total of three know that I'm an amateur novelist with dreams of getting published. Granted, most of them aren't extremely literary, but still. Practically nobody knows this side of me and I find that I can't really share it (which makes finding beta readers difficult as hell). I don't know why I balk at telling people what I do. In one of his books Stephen King said that writing was almost masturbatory. Is that the stigma? Does anyone else feel the need to keep their writing side secret?

Not magical, but think of Scully from the X-Files. Her skepticism was a necessary part of the show.

OK, so... this is me.

More than 10 years ago I wrote a novel-length horror manuscript. It sucked. I went back and did two rewrites before realizing the truism about polishing a turd, and moved on. I did a second novel, a paranormal mystery, and wasn't happy with it so I went and did a prequel to it (I loved the characters). I tried to hook an agent with it and came darn close (had a lot of exchanges with one who ultimately decided to pass because it "wasn't quite good enough" - words that have more or less become branded on my soul). Broken, I filed them all away and tried to forget about them for the last six years.

Late last year, upon urging from a friend, I gave the manuscript to him to review. I took his notes, did a quick edit, and gave it back for perusal. When I get it back I'm going to try to get it going again, hopefully with better results. In the meantime, I've dusted off an old idea and am about to embark on yet another round of tribulations. I don't know if my heart can take it, though, but a dream never chased is a dream never caught.

Thanks for hearing me out. I kinda DO feel like I've been to an AA meeting.

Author Craft / Thinking of writing an oral history.
« on: September 09, 2013, 01:38:36 AM »
Without going into specifics, I work in law enforcement dealing with some straight-up characters on all sides of the law. To be short, everyone I work with has at least a story to tell (usually far more than one), from the harrowing to the hilarious. I think those stories would be well appreciated by all kinds of readers, and it'd be a snap for me to collect them (I figured that an oral history would be the perfect format for this). Thing is, I'm worried about legalities. Can I use the name of my employment site without permission? I can get waivers signed by my coworkers/ story donors, but not from some of the people in their stories. Is merely changing their names enough?

After an evening dancing with Google, I'm sure that speaking with a lawyer will be helpful. Does anyone recommend a specific type of lawyer, or will any old one do? Are they multipurpose, like legal Swiss army knives? I've never written anything nonfiction and I'm not very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the process, so any and all help is welcome.

I'm sure this was brought up before, but can someone please refresh me... did we get to see what happened to Bob following his fight with the Anti-Bob? For the life of me I can't seem to recall any mention of him after Harry escapes the Nevernever.

The Writer's Journey by Christopher Vogler. It's a great read, focusing mainly on the Hero's Journey story method. Highly recommended.
