DF Books / Re: Another reader for Audiobooks

James Marsters is a great voice actor, and his readings are very clear and professional in my Audible books.  Who is reading on yours? 
The first version of _Ghost Story_ (DF13 on CD) used a different reader but he wasn’t bad either.  There are also DF audiobooks recorded for the library for the blind I use sometimes (low vision in my case), but I don’t know how the reader for that is, since I have Audible and CDs.

I am reading it because it was mentioned as a source for a lot of the tropes that ended up in D&D, but given how that wizard advertisement is almost the opposite of Harry’s, I wonder if the book had an impact on Jim’s writing as well. 

(If you have an active Audible membership, you can get _Three Hearts and Three Lions_ for free.  It’s a fun story, and the reader does a good job characterizing and separating the voices.  A few have accents so thick that you really need to pay attention to get what they’re saying, until you get to know them.)

...needn't quote the story at all, just tell someone what to read or listen to. 
Seems weird that someone would want to block that, especially since other resources like the timelines have been around forever and could be even more spoiler-prone.

Thanks, but is that all?  I recalled that much already, but I was hoping there were more descriptions that included things like height, build, hair color, etc. 

Come to think of it, his eyes may not be green at all, since the front of a bill is grey.

DF Spoilers / Marcone's Appearance

Has anyone collected all of the passages describing Marcone's appearance?  If so, could you paste them here?  I've been visually impaired for over a decade now, so I've been an audiobook listener for a while.  As such, it's difficult to find specific references like this. 
Or, if someone has an index of what's in various chapters throughout the series, I could definitely use that. 

I remember his eyes are the green of an old dollar note and I assume he's typically in a suit, but I don't recall if his hair has gone entirely grey or not.  After he apparently summoned and accepted the coin, he of course had the second set of Fallen eyes, but I don't remember what color they were or if he was physically restored in other ways besides having his neck unbroken.

Based on Cold Days (where we learned that Merlin created the wards on Demonreach "in five different times" with a single casting) I think we know beyond doubt that Merlin practiced chronomancy!
Well yes, but what I'm wondering is if he started life in the future and then went back in time to set up the Council?  That might be 'living backwards in time'. 
Oh, and maybe he takes Amoracchius with him, and that's where Arthur Pendragon got Excalibur.

I'm not sure why his memories would be affected, except that the new perspective could change how he feels about certain events in his past. 
Some of the legends about Merlin refer to him 'living backwards in time', so it seems likely that he was/is a chronomancer.  When Merlin established the first Council, he probably had personal experience with how dangerous such uses of magic could be, and tweaking a timestream without creating paradoxes (paradoxae? paradoxen?) would be an arduous process.

I recently made a character to play in a Vampire: Dark Ages game (though the superflu may mean that we don't actually end up playing for a while), and it occurred to me that "Dark Ages" would work as a Dresden Files title. 

Harry has a habit of skirting or occasionally breaking (with some degree of justification) the White Council's laws of magic, but we don't know of him messing with chronomancy yet.  What if Harry did go back in time and end up becoming/training the original Merlin?  Maybe Mordred/Kemmler/Cowl are likewise related?  Maybe by the end of the series, Harry becomes the Blackstaff and ends up time-hopping to counter & combat the entity that turns out to be more than just an extremely powerful necromancer.  Maybe that entity is similar to the Fallen, and killing one host will only delay it for a time until it infects the mind of another mortal.  If Harry discovers that black magic acts as a gateway to let this entity into a wizard's mind, maybe he forms the White Council and its laws as a way to proactively detect and hunt budding dark wizards before they can grow powerful enough to become the next embodiment of the capital 'D' Dark.  If strict enforcement of those laws had cost his younger self his head, that would be ironic, but also a serious paradox, so maybe he's had to tweak the timestream in other ways to avoid that, which could take literal Ages of work... Dark Ages! 

Of course I'm likely nowhere close, but with the excitement of the next book finally coming out, such wild speculations come to mind.

This has probably already been pointed out, but I haven't read the entire ten year history of this thread.

Harry may not be an entirely reliable narrator, and personal memories are notoriously prone to unconscious editing.  Why not just figure that Harry's age and childhood media references (Knight Rider, etc.) are based on Jim's?  I expect that Bob might have exact dates, but he could have ended up in a situation such that Harry no longer has access to him for reference by the time Harry is meant to be writing his case memoirs.  Bob has basically moved on to a new owner by now, but maybe he gets captured by fae, or his skull home gets broken, etc.

As a skeptical humanist (atheist), I'm certainly unperturbed by casual blasphemies used as expletives, but it got rather repetitive in that final fight.  Maybe it was just more noticeable in audiobook format?
Otherwise, I did enjoy the book, so thank you.   :)

This is a replacement character.  I have been playing with the group since last summer, and my first character was entirely non-combatant unless I could find some way to use the environment.  For example, getting a bigger bird-creature angry enough to chase my manoeuvrable wereraven at its top speed, and then tricking it into flying into a brick wall.  Most of the time I just assessed aspects and passed them on to others when there was a combat, and outside of combat I used Deceit and voice mimicry to screw with people.  Anyway, The character reached a point of some resolution and had a very compelling reason to get out of town, so I decided to go completely opposite and make someone who is usually on the other side of the old 'fight or flight' response.  We also just got bumped to 8 refresh, making a wizard possible.

The other characters are currently a pure mortal authority figure, the Autumn Knight who uses baked goods as 'potions', and a White Court Virgin (lust) who can cover most of the sneaky stuff my wereraven specialized in before that character joined.  Opposing forces have included Native mythos creatures, a warlock, and compound full of white courtiers who feed on wrath led by a fire-n-brimstone preacher.  When the latter incites emotion, they also make the target stronger, so dropping a berserker into that could be interesting.

I think the idea of having killed someonething that was a monster in a flesh mask could work.  The pure mortal has had trouble with the reds in his past, and his cousin who is a warden based in Atlanta has actually been pretty useless.

Okay, I am working on a new character, and would like some ideas.  This is a character coming in to an existing group, so I can't really tie my aspects in the normal way for now.  The overall idea is a junior warden from a Scandinavian country who has inherited one of the silver swords from a recently (apparently) slain parent.  I posted ideas on a FB group, so I'll just copy them here.

So far I have the high concept of "Junior Warden" and the trouble of "Warden Jr." Yes, my mamma wore combat boots, and those are some big shoes to fill.

My 'family' aspect is also connected to that: "Queen of Swords, Knave of Staves". I inherited both my warden sword and my Conviction from mother, and of course this aspect is also based on a couple tarot cards.

'Wands' and 'Staves' are interchangeable terms for the suit, and 'knave' is another name for the 'jack' playing card which is what became of the 'knights' in tarot. I'm not sure if this means dad was just mundane, or somehow dishonourable. The Knight of Staves is a symbol of wanderlust, so along with the 'combat boots' on one side, dad's boots were apparently made for walkin'.

My last aspect is currently 'Immigrant Song'.

Like Eddie Murphy in 'Coming to America', I'm not from 'round here. Unlike his character, I didn't come entirely by choice, and I'm quite a bit more pale, so for me the story title is 'Exiled to Vinland'. My mother's sword was found in the wreckage of the White Council's outpost at Archangel, and while my reaction to her apparent death gave me motive to hunt the Red Court, my inexperience could be more of a liability than an asset, so the Council moved me somewhere out of the way (a city of about 90k in the US).

I'm considering whether to give him an aspect that makes him a bit of a berserker, and whether I want him to be a metal musician. I don't know that he has room in his skills for a decent Performance, or if it even makes sense to be able to play around electrical devices like amps and speakers. Maybe playing calms him to the extent that he doesn't short out the equipment?

Having a skill cap of 29 and not able to put anything at 'Superb' does make it somewhat more difficult to build the skill tower. Besides the Conviction, Discipline, and Lore needed for spellcasting, he also needs Weapons and Might in order to sweep a sword around effectively. Add in Alertness, Athletics, and Endurance to round combat needs out, and there's not much room left.

Does the warden sword and cloak cover all my magical gear? If I wanted to use runes for thaumaturgy, how would I represent that?

Hmm... being a big guy may make people assume you're stupid, so that could be a temper trigger. Then there's the tendency for a big guy to be targeted by those looking to make a name for themselves... that could piss you off a lot. Add that to having one parental role model missing and the other (probably) recently killed... having a tendency to flip out and break some shit is quite understandable. Now I just need a better aspect name than "would you like some making fuck", and to decide whether I want to make the berserking my 'trouble' aspect since that's something likely to get one in a LOT of trouble.

This has probably been asked before, but this is a huge thread...

How do we square:
"25 BSF, October 31: Harry is born."   
and:
"0 ASF, March: Storm Front.  Harry is 25, according to Jim, and he's been wizarding professionally for two years.  We can reasonably place the year 0 in the timeline within a year or two of 2000, and there's a fair amount of evidence indicating that it could be 2000."
with:
"AGE 27-28: Storm Front" ?

I'm in favour of the first two, since making him 25 in 2000 is easier for me to remember and calculate from, as we'd share the birth year 1975.

Is there a need for a -0 power that is essentially covered by the high concept?

(Incidentally, if executing a complex program may still make one mindless, then we all are.)
