DF Spoilers / Re: Easy defense against the Eye

Considering how Titania tore apart Dresden's circle in Cold Days, I imagine that circles wouldn't do much against the Eye.

Ooh, like in "American Gods"! Or the random beings created when the Hogfather is assassinated (sort of).

[Harry] also admitted to being too lazy to really apply himself and study.

I agree with most of your comment, but is he really lazy about studying? We see him researching stuff a lot--exploding heart spell in Storm Front, vampire cures after Grave Peril, etc. In Skin Game, while fighting Hannah Ascher he rhapsodizes about loving the Art and spending time on it, as opposed to just liking the power of it.

Not confirmed at all; I was just rereading Ghost Story and the WoJ about Fitz's name meaning "bastard." Wanted to know if there was a possibility of an ectomancer--like loup garou running around in future.

...the son of Tera West and Harley MacFinn, right? Bad luck for him if so.

I also noticed, that there is no Maggie. Not even in Harry's thoughts. The only sign that there is a child in his life, was his answer to someone saying that people want better lives for their kids and Harry throws in "me too". That's it.

Harry should never have been made a custodial parent; JB just can't write Harry-as-dad or Maggie well. Children are annoying, inconvenient pains in the rear (I say this as the mother of four sweet, awesome kiddos who are lights of my life), and it is massively difficult to forget about them.

Pleaaaaase let it be good! I don't want to cringe, but to have a new author to enjoy!

Can't help you at the moment, but welcome! The series is a lot of fun.

Interesting. Mind, "black magic makes you eviler" seems to accord with what we know about neural pathways, and how doing or thinking something can deepen or reset those pathways; for this reason, I think that "black magic makes you eviler" is true. It may, however, be like a truth we tell a child that is so simplified that it is not really true, or at any rate not universally so--kind of a magical "Mommy, where do babies come from?"

But for all of that nuance, I suspect that wizards who think as you propose generally find themselves becoming monsters. Dresden is certainly vulnerable, as he himself knows, and he's going to have to confront the ways in which he's changed or violated his moral code.

DF Spoilers / After the BAT?
« on: September 21, 2021, 10:31:53 PM »
I am reading The High King to my kids. So good! Spoiler alert for this book:

Magic leaves Prydain after Arawn's defeat.

Could something similar occur in the Dresdenverse at the conclusion of the BAT? I'd be inclined to say no because magic is part of the "physics" of the universe, but perhaps if the Outsiders are finally defeated (big if) these physics could change. Maybe magical beings would still exist but not interact with mortals, unless they were divine/angelic. Maybe "talent" would no longer occur among mortals. Maybe God will hit a big ol' reset button (but not in a Matrix kind of way, shudder).

DF Spoilers / Re: Dead Beat reread and faves

Leaving aside zombie T-rex--which, yeah, hard to top--the scene where Evil Bob nearly offs Harry is good. I also like the confrontation between Lash and Harry after Butters spoiled the illusion; the bit about how his blood would be mixing with the rain if Lash intended harm is chilling.

Butters really comes into his own in this book. You could say the same of Ghost Story, where he's learning to use his talents to confront supernatural evil, or in Skin Game, where he becomes a Knight of the Cross, but in Dead Beat Butters first understands what a scary world he lives in, is naturally terrified, and overcomes that fear enough to save Harry's guts, Sue's "heartbeat," and Luccio's life.

Honestly, that book as a whole is so entertaining and enjoyable. Lamarr's description of Kumori's necromancy is good.

I'd write more, but the baby says no...talk about scary.....

DF Spoilers / Re: Carlos in Infected

He was kinda shocked at the example Harry was setting for the students, if nothing else. And someone who can make a necklace of his enemies' teeth might be susceptible to being pushed into anger and bitterness at a perceived betrayal.

They seemed pretty friendly when teaching kids at Camp Kaboom--then again, Harry behaved in a rather appalling way there, so....

Maybe you're right, but Carlos's actions also make sense if he is not infected but hurt by Harry's repeated lack of trust in him and his experience with Molly. As far back as White Knight we've seen him express doubts, and really, who can blame him?

DF Spoilers / Re: Who is Nicodemus?
« on: May 30, 2021, 06:00:19 PM »
James, not Judas, was the brother of Jesus. Thomas was the disciple who saw Jesus last; when the other disciples told him they'd seen the risen Jesus after His resurrection, Thomas didn't believe them. Jesus showed up and told Thomas to feel his wounds, whereupon Thomas said "My Lord and my God" and Jesus said those who don't see but believe are blessed.

I like the idea of Nicodemus being a Roman soldier. His remark about being able to drive chariots seems to fit.
