DF Spoilers / Ew!
« on: September 08, 2023, 06:32:32 AM »
Just realised whilst Nameless is the 10th unnamed son of Loviatar, in the Dresdenverse Ms Lapland is described as a Finnish Witch, and they are descibed as “scions of Loviatar” suggesting that she is the niece (great niece etc ) of one of the other sons, or worse is Nameless daughter (granddaughter etc).

Given the relationship portrayed in The Law they give Nicodemus/Deirdre a run for their money in most disturbing Father/Daughter relationship in the Dresdenverse. However it’s Bob who describes their relationship as sexual, and we are mean’t to imply it when Nameless uses the address “darling” to Ms Lapland.

Some mythology (not referenced in the Dresden Files) described the 10th child of Loviatar as a daughter not a son. Could Nameless be Ms Laplands mother? That relationship would give Mab/Maeve a run for their money in the Mother/Daughter stakes

Whichever way there is some familial relationship.

Whilst researching Lapland, it came to my attention that Lapland contains a prominent region called Inari. The same name as the youngest daughter of Lord Raith. Was Ms Lapland forced by Nameless to bear a child for Lord Raith? It would explain her extraordinary antipathy to arrogant men. The other most common use of Inari is the Japanese Goddess of rice.

I would expect to see Inari back in the series for the first time since Blood Rites, bringing and children she has with Rick with her. Blood Rites was Autumn 4SF so any child would be around 10 years old the earliest age young wizards first start to manifest their power. Any such child would be a candidate for Harry’s new apprentice. Lara is not going to allow her nephew or neice to be trained by the White Court.

That would make Harry and Nameless in-laws. Lots of lovely emotional angst for Jim to put Harry through in that relationship.

Two titbits dropped about Next Book.

1. Harry gets a Valkyrie bodyguard,
2. Harry gets a new apprentice

DF Spoilers / Heloise Valorius - Who Is She?
« on: August 16, 2023, 08:23:32 PM »
A theory provoked by a casual comment on another thread, we hear Heloise in The Law but never see her. I suggested that Jim had not fleshed out the character, but a quick re-read suggests to me another theory.

Harry didn’t see Heloise because Heloise and Max would know that she bears a striking resemblance to her mother, who must be known to Harry.Max literally tells her not “Don’t call your mother though” on page 63. Max is extraordinarily clued up on the supernatural and Harry in particular.

I think therefore given the French name, Heloise is one of Martha Liberty’s daughters, and likely a practitioner in her own right. Martha is based in New Orleans and is known to keep track of her descendants.

This gives Jin an ‘in’ to flip Martha Liberty’s Senior Council vote.

Working on the presumption that ALL the case files are part of a significant whole (as Jim constantly is asked to recount “where did you get the idea….” ) Storm Front and Full Moon have to have serious connection to the whole.

Harry had destroyed someones previous  plans to destabilise Marcone’s operation (Storm Front) by training Victor Sells and destabilise Chicago’s FBI (Full Moon) with the HexenWulf Belts where Marcone was being used as a Bogeyman to get the FBI involved.

Why?

We learn much later in Changes that the FBI Headquarters connects via the NeverNever to the Erl Kings Realm, and the Red Court seem to know their way around the Building (that’s the Eeb’s style, they did it with Harry’s building)  At this point the reader assumes through Dead Beat the Erl King is Wildfae. We later learn he isn’t in Battle Ground and is in fact a vassal of Mab’s and indeed one of her heavy hitters.

Cowl had undertaken attacks on both Lea and Maeve through the later Athame plot in Grave Peril. This suggests that he was behind the plots in both Storm Front and Full Moon and that they are in effect the same scheme, to secure a back door to the Erl King’s realm for a sneak attack, to destroy or cripple her vassal, exactly like that which occurred through Pell’s Theatre on Arctis Tor to free Lea/Nemesis.the Red Court would be up for this, removing competing predators and this may have been Cowl’s price from the Red King in dealing with the Duchess Ariana’s attempts to get her revenge prematurely on Eb. Imagine Battle Ground with the Red Court instead of or as well as the Fomor and the Red Court sending a bomb ahead of the attack into the Erl Kings hall, as part of the destabilisation agenda, with the aid of the suborned FBI.

Of course this presumes Cowl is Nameless with knowledge of the Erl King’s realm (as a major vassal of Winter) and the FBI Headquarters (as a major defence attorney in Chicago).

DF Spoilers / Nameless IS Cowl - Collected Rambings
« on: July 04, 2023, 05:06:21 PM »
.The presumption is that Cowl is Harry’s ultimate nemesis, either directly or indirectly responsible for driving each of the major case files. This means Cowl has to have connections with Kemmler, Winter and Marcone and the Denarians which he is not portrayed as having as Cowl but which Nameless does.

The first appearance of Cowl is in Grave Peril so we are looking at potential interactions between Harry and Cowl/Nameless after that. However Harry later suspects someone was responsible for both The Shadowman and the HexenWulf. A high priced Lawyer would move in the circles of both Victor Sells and the FBI where Cowl could not, and targeting Marcone the ultimate organised criminal is an obvious move, he wants Chicago a war zone. Later Nameless would be employed by Marcone (Even Hand as the nameless lawyer sending Marcone letters and The Law) so this is Nameless working from inside, just as he is suspected as doing in Winter in The Law)

Maeves Court came to Chicago at the time of GP, meaning Nameless was in town at the same time as Cowl and required disguise to hide from Lea.

‘The Cold Lady came to Undertown. Her court is in Undertown.’ ‘What?’ I sputtered. ‘Since when?’ Toot whirled around in impatient loops in the air. ‘Since the last autumn!’ I scratched at my hair. It made sense, I supposed. Last autumn, a vengeful vampire and her allies had stirred up all sorts of supernatural mischief, creating turbulence in the border between the real world and the Nevernever, the world of spirit. Shortly after, the war between the wizards and the vampires had begun.” SK page 181

Nameless in SK should still be fully part of Winter, and given his nature he would be attracted to Maeves Court

“‘There,’ she said, once I’d been seated. ‘Not so untamable as he claimed.’

I felt my jaw get a little tighter as Billy took a seat beside me. A trio of brightly colored lights zipped in, bearing a silver tray holding a crystalline ewer of water and two glasses. ‘As who said?’ Maeve waved a hand airily. ‘No matter.’ “ Pages 203 and 204 of SK.

‘He’ is most likely Nameless who we don’t see unless he is a dancer in the crowd. The refusal to name is pertinent as it suggests someone within Maeves Court has been keeping an eye on Harry. Nameless/Cowl in Maeves Court puts context to the suborning of Lloyd Slate and Maeve herself and the harassment of the changelings, including Sarissa Maeves alternate, which led to the destabilisation of both Summer and Winter.

The Red Cap would also be present at this point in Maeves Court keeping an on Maeve for Mab. He would be an excellent eye witness, but had no prior interest in Harry.

More to come- much more

The Next Book up is Death Masks and Cowl’s interest is in maintaining the Red Court/White Council war so his involvement is in the Duel B Plot trying to avoid a neat resolution, exactly the same as Changes. Cowl/Nameless would have concerns Harry would win in a fair fight of Will, so sowing discord in the Red Court convinced a man of honour to cheat? Nameless may have known of the Shroud A Plot and timed the duel to disrupt Harry’s participation. Cowl has connections within the Red Court as demonstrated in GP.

In Blood Rites we know from both Zoo Day and Fugitive that Cowl was in fact behind the theft of the puppies suggesting he is domiciled in Chicago. The first Black Court attack on Harry is after he has returned the rest of the puppies to Brother Wang at the Airport suggesting that Cowl sicced the scourge on Harry after his taking back the puppies, it has nothing to do with the A-Plot, but does intersect with it. Cowl has a known connection to Mavra from GP and this may be him calling in a favour. The Scourge may have been in town 2 weeks previously and Nameless may have helped them settle in. A Black Court infection is right in Nameless bailiwick as a Demi-god of discord. With the Red Court decimated in Chicago it is likely Nameless was called upon to make arrangements, putting him in the perfect place to undermine Ortega. Nameless also likely arranged the Blackmail photos as well.

Dead Beat and the return of Cowl with Kumori. My theory is that Sarissa was Kumori. At this point in the narrative Nameless would still be fully part of winter undermining Maeve and watching Lea succumb to the Athame, so why not also Sarissa Maeves alternate? Sarissa is a Changeling, daughter of the former mortal practitioner Mab who has a known interest in healthcare. There are limits to what magic can do, but Nameless is a known associate of Kemmler, Necromancer he would know things about life and death no other practitioner would. This is consistent with Marcones man Kumori saved on Whicker which left tremendous cold This would suggest Cowl engaged the outside contractor to deliberately engage Marcone’s man with Kumori waiting in the wings. Nameless may not have a penchant for healing as a Demi-god of Discord, requiring his use of Kumori in his stead, someone with a penchant for healing. Kumori doesn’t have a major talent for showy magic page 224 Dead Beat, Kumori wasn’t strong enough to wrestle the book away from Harry not using his magic, but even a minor talent can be honed with instruction and practise. Was Nameless gaining control over Sarissa by teaching her the Necromancers version of healing he learnt from Kemmler, but couldn’t use himself due to his nature?

We know in The Law that Nameless will go to work for Marcone, was this the favour he traded on to get a foot in the door? I can’t see Gard being agreeable to Nameless unless Marcone thought he had good reason to overrule her. Nameless was fully in Winter at this point as the attack on Arctis Tor which led to his exile had yet to come.

So a female Winter Mortal, with a penchant for healing, part of Mab’s Court where Nameless could gain a hold over her would suggest Sarissa is Kumori if Cowl is indeed Nameless. We won’t be introduced to Sarissa until Cold Days and it strikes me as very Nameless to target Mab’s Changeling daughter twin to her bully Maeve? Using Lloyd Slate as part of his plan to gain a hold over her? All the speculation as to Kumori from Dead Beat to Cold  Days would be rendered irrelevant.

It would also seem that Nameless has a penchant for manipulating women, we see this directly in The Law with Miss Laplander, but this would include Maeve, The Leansidhe, so easily Sarissa as well. He would have figured she was the spare Winter Lady, I bet he stoked Maeves paranoia over this leading to Lily’s death, inadvertently freeing Sarissa from his hold.

In Summer Knight Mab says that this is the last time that Maeve hires the help. Did Maeve choose Lloyd Slate based upon Nameless recommendation? That Slate was always Nameless man due to his heroin habit? That he could use Slate to bully the Winter Changelings and manipulate them like Ace in engaging the Tigress to take out Harry? which is exactly what he did in Summer Knight?

Page 231 the Erl King is described as Wildfae in Peabodys book, written approximately a century before, but in Battle Ground is definitely part of Winter. Did the book or Kemmlers creation of the Darkhallow force the Erl King to choose Winter? Page 241 would suggest so, Mab knows about The Word and Peabody’s book and the danger that it represents. Who did she find that out from? The existence of the Word was known to Bob, the heirs and from The Law potentially Nameless. Nameless may have traded that to Mab as his price for entry into Winter, gaining the Erl King as a powerful and unlike Nameless a TRUSTWORTHY Vassal. In return for a vow to not summon the Erl King or cause him to be summoned, could that be why Cowl is trying to destroy it at first?  Could both Nameless and The Erl King being bound by Winter Law mean that Nameless/Cowl couldn’t use the summoning, but could hijack Harry’s if Harry isn’t doing it on Cowls behalf? Cowl was only destroying copies of the book, preventing others from using the Darkhallow, initially because it was no good to him.

DF Spoilers / Is Mister a Changeling?
« on: April 25, 2023, 09:04:08 AM »
We know
1. Mister is the only thing which looks the same under Wizard Sight (suggesting Harry needed to look at Mister at one point)

2.Mister is extremely large for a cat, and it is suggested he is Maine Coone (he has been drawn as one.)

3. The Little Folk refer to him as “Dreadbeast Mister” Dreadbeast is a gaming term for a magically enhanced animal

4. His food bowl reads “Emperor” a reference to the Sith Lord EMPEROR palpating

5. Mab likes him.

6. He is 18 at this point in the narrative. Maine Coones live between 12.5 and 15 years, and in robust health.

He suffered no ill effect from hosting the Nimean Lion

I believe Mister is the scion of Cat Sith taken by Lea to be a spy in Harry’s household using a memory Harry had of Malcolm rescuing a kitten and nursing it back to health. Lea as a dog person didn’t realise this would spectacularly missfire as Mister totally ignored his mission, because Cat.His tail was removed as its unusual length together with his size would show his Malk heritage (Like Merle) He has decided he his perfectly happy as he his which is why he appears as he does under Wizards Sight, and refuses to choose mortal or Fae like Sarissa. If so he would have a massively expanded lifespan (explaining his current age and health).

Mab is a cat person (like Sheldon she appreciates their indifference) which is why Mister ended up on her lap.

Harry knows this on a subconscious level hence the “Emperor” food bowl.

Nameless was in with all the Winter Changelings as part of Maeves Court  he would therefore know Mister is a changeling. He as Cowl would know that as such Mister would be a good host for the spirit of the Nimean lion giving him the idea for his petty revenge. Misters biology as a changeling is predisposed to transforming into a much larger form. This is why he takes the transformations in his stride without harm.

DF Spoilers / “You Know What He Was Meant To Be”
« on: February 14, 2023, 12:53:14 PM »
Martha Liberty to Eb page 51 Summer Knight I believe this is the earliest allusion to Harry being Starborn.

LTW is present so all three are aware.

Earlier in Summer Knight, Mab in her first meeting with Harry mentions that she watched Harry stalemate the Leansidhe. In Grave Peril  I believe that Mab was told  by The Gatekeeper of a potential divergence in futures the centre of which was Harry a Starborn. She was watching Harry, not the Leansidhe, and it was after that that she bought Harry’s mortgage, I don’t believe she had any interest in Harry until then.

DF Spoilers / Happy National Pizza Day 9th February 2023
« on: February 10, 2023, 11:45:53 AM »
Yesterday was Christmas for the Little Folk, so I presume today is their Boxing Day- they spend it checking empty pizza boxes for crumbs, scraps of pepperoni and blobs of melted cheese.

Is Jim going to reference this event in Next Book? There are a whole succession of National Pizza Days, so National Cheese pizza day is their Lent and National Pizza Day With Everything on (Except Anchovies) their Thanksgiving. It would make a lovely running joke throughout Next Book. Harry is living with the Little Folk now so it would work.

I celebrated with a 12 inch sausage pizza (three types) ground beef and onions with a bottle Coke Zero for the Tooth Fairies.

DF Spoilers / Problems For Paranoid Gary
« on: January 25, 2023, 10:07:50 PM »
In The Law we see Bob measuring up Gary’s Head as a possible residence, but what if someone has already beaten Bob there?

Gary is a super hacker, but what if he was merely good hacker, but stumbled on a supernatural way to boost his abilities?

Bob’s personality reflects the person in charge of his skull, that includes Little Orphan Harry who is desperate for family, and for his familiar home.

What if Bob is reacting to the presence of a growing spirit of intellect inside Gary’s head, one to which Bob himself has a familial connection unlike Bonea? Family he never had and never knew he wanted

I have theorised that Lea is Bobs mother. What if she also gave inspiration to Gary?

10
Some slight detail now available on the Jim Butcher website and it can be pre-ordered on Kindle from Amazon at a very reasonable price to be dropped on the 7th March 2023, making it likely the next part of the Dresdenverse and the only part to drop until Next Book

This is the short story where the Nimean Lion escapes Hades realm and Cerberus enlists Mouse’s help to track him down.

Jim is undertaking an event later this week with his son,  for Dead Man’s Hand (in my opinion a better book than Storm Front, I so am glad Jim cloned himself to prevent another Wheel of Time) so perhaps more info will be forthcoming

DF Spoilers / Bob and Gary
« on: July 22, 2022, 07:11:09 PM »
In The Law Bob is entirely too fascinated with Gary’s Skull as a potential home. On another thread I suggested that Bob wants to jump Gary’s bones in relation to a comment that Jim “isn’t that woke” about LBTQ+ issues, and that may be right.

There are three points though.

1. We know where little spirits of intellect come from since Skin Game.
2. We know that the person controlling the sanctum colours the personality of the spirit since Dead Beat.
3. Harry is almighty glad to be back in his sub basement, we know this from The Law itself but has been prefigured since finding the trapdoor in Peace Talks, and he has been very homesick.

I think rather than being enamoured with Gary, Gary makes Bob homesick.

For his very first home.

His Fathers skull.

Gary reminds Bob of his father. He isn’t his father because Bob would be way better with the internet, but I think this is a clue to his fathers identity, his father was a mathematician/cryptographer/ philosopher/oracle very like Gary, but from over 1000 years ago.

We have the WOJ that we have met Bob’s parents which often leads to the Gatekeeper and the English Prisoner as the two known mortal males to still be around from that period. If this is a clue then  The Gatekeeper is a very strong candidate given his foresight, if that is what is making Bob homesick, as well as having a well organised mind. Like Gary the Gatekeeper is good at ferreting out information and keeps to himself.

I have learned towards the English Prisoner in the past with Lea as Bob’s mother, but this makes me reconsider putting me in the Gatekeeper camp.

Thoughts please, clue or something else?

DF Spoilers / The Law
« on: July 05, 2022, 01:32:16 AM »
The Law, just finished the first read through. It is set a month and four months after Battle Ground, so still not further in the time-line than Christmas Eve/The Good People

My theories about Bob and the internet appear to be correct, he can indeed access it and mobile phones in the Castle and appears to be streaming movies for Harry.

One of my theories about the Unseelie Accords was also bang on the money, Mab doesn’t care about Harry unless it also involves an insult to Winter, in this case damage to the company car. Then yes she gets involved.

Some of my speculation confirming Paranoid Gary is also correct, and he now appears to be working with Harry, but especially Bob.

DF Spoilers / Really Stupid Foreshadowing
« on: January 24, 2022, 02:03:53 PM »

There are many instances of foreshadowing in the Dresden Files some obvious, some less so, many which may be accidental, and some which have yet to come to pass. We the readers also tend to read things into the text as foreshadowing, when sometimes they aren’t

What I am interested in are throw away lines which may represent foreshadowing but are really, really stupid, but if unresolved are going to be really, really annoying. Did Jim have a payoff in mind and just forgot or abandoned it? Or have we grasped onto something which never was foreshadowing

A perfect example is the constant references to the Merlin’s bottle cap collection. Is it a real thing? Will it have some minor or major plot point pay off later on in the series? Harry is due at some future point due to have a showdown with the Merlin and the White Council due to the Gatekeeper (who should know) will the bottle cap collection play a part? Or has Jim just played far too much Fallout?

My ideal scenario? It involves Harry, Nick and the Merlin and two identical bags, one full of Blackened Denarius, and the other full of the Merlin’s most prized bottle caps, leading to a Nick versus Merlin battle.

Are there other examples of such frustrating ‘foreshadowing’?

14
Their freedom of choice still holds though, besides if the Almighty wanted them to have a fast track though the Nevernever, they'd already have it.

The White God has to work with what is available, if however use of the Never Never became available...

It has to noted that the daughter of a former Knight and a friend to both current Knights is now the Winter Lady, and the current Winter Knight (also friends with both current Knighrs and the arbiter of appointment of a third) has been gifted Soulfire by the White God. Winter has never been so pre-disposed to allowing travel through its realm by the White God’s agents.

This may be coincidence, or it may be the White God moving in mysterious ways.

The Denarians had three members who could probably travel the NeverNever, Cassius, Tessa and Namshiels previous host. This would make sense as Nick required Harry for this task in Skin Game. Harry did for Cassius and Namshiels former host. Tessa is less likely than ever to do Nicks bidding, following the death of their daughter,  meaning the Denarian’s (at least Nick’s faction) are somewhat limited in travel options, at a time when the Knights could really open up.

DF Spoilers / What Should Butters Ask For?
« on: December 11, 2021, 04:26:48 AM »
Butters earned a major favour from Mab in Battle Ground, pulling the steel rebar from her and allowing her to resume regenerating.

What should Butters ask for? It can only be something within Mab’s power to grant, so it can only be something within Mab’s (or Titania’s) existing influence or reach we have seen or heard about in the files, and something Butters would ask for, not necessarily something he needs, but perhaps something he wants.

For example Mab has access to riches, but Butters isn’t really interested in personal wealth. He is a simple nerdy soul at heart.

Thoughts please
