Site Suggestions & Support / A Suggestion About Upcoming Book News
« on: November 11, 2013, 03:17:52 PM »
I think we should add some sort of link or ticker right on the main Forum page which would either display the news on upcoming books or point people directly at the posts containing such news. I suggest this because I've been wandering the site for some time, worriedly trying to figure out why I couldn't find the release date info for Skin Game, until a few minutes ago when I finally found a thread which pointed out that the book isn't finished yet. (I'm not sure why, but I mistakenly thought Jim had finished the book in September.)

Posts asking about when the next books are coming out sometimes morph into threads in which people complain about a book not being out, so I thought having the latest news on upcoming books right there on the main Forum page might simplify things, and help to enhance the calm of the populace.

We do already have that countdown timer that's used once a release date is set, but that can't help with less specific news. What I'm thinking about would be more like a headline or Tweet or something which would go up until the countdown timer could be used.

With the online Q&A sessions coming up today and on the 20th, I thought it might be helpful if we had a place to pool question ideas. If you want to ask a question, but for some reason can't remember any of the thousand questions you've had about the series over the years now that the pressure's on, or if you have so many questions that you feel like you need to spread them around so that other people can share some of the burden, then this thread's for you.

Some of mine, to start off:

1) Angels are apparently all soul. So:
   1a) Can angels be soulgazed?
1b) Can the Fallen in the Denarii be soulgazed through the second pair of eyes which    sometimes show up on the foreheads of the Denarians? And, if so:
1c) Will the soulgaze be different than the one you would see if you simply soulgazed the    Fallen's Denarian host?

2) Would you(Jim) please clarify exactly who the Faerie Queens can personally kill and who they can't? At various times in Summer Knight and in the rest of the series, we've been told or seen evidence that:

-- The Sidhe Knights are the only ones allowed to act in matters not directly related to the Faerie Courts. (SK, Ch. 10)
-- The Queens are not allowed to kill anyone who isn't a member of their own Court. (SK, Ch. 10)

And yet:

-- We've seen fae servants of the Faerie Queens kill and attempt to kill mortals many times.
-- Aurora was able to try to kill Harry just fine, but was unable to harm Murphy. (SK, Ch. 20-21)
-- When Harry is preparing to deal with Mab to become the Winter Knight, he thinks to himself that Mab can't kill a mortal, only make them wish they were dead. The implication seems to include the Winter Knight. (Changes, Ch. 30)

So which mortals can the Faerie Queens kill? Bob tells us one thing, but evidence in the books indicates something else.

3) Can Changelings be soulgazed?

4) Since Lash is apparently some sort of spirit-being, can she take on a physical-seeming form while she's in the spirit world, the way ghosts can?

Questions From Other People (from a more-or-less identical thread I made last year, which, alas, came too late):

Vairelome:

From one of the recent threads concerning Maggie, there was some discussion about her official last name right now (post GS, staying with the Carpenters).

So: "What is Maggie's official last name right now?" and if clarification is needed, "Under what last name is she registered at the local elementary school (assuming that's where she's placed)?"

Karley:

1) How and when did Harry and Michael meet? Would you consider writing a short story about their first encounter?
2) How long has Arthur Langtry been the Merlin?
3) How does one become the Merlin? [ Already answered. ]
4) Is the Winter Lady Maeve the same person as or was she some way involved with the old Irish Queen Maeve of Connacht?
5) If Harry ever does put his full effort into universe-hopping, can you make him go to Discworld?
6) What are the names of the other three minor vampire courts?
7) How did Justin DuMorne find out about Harry?
8 ) When did the old Mother Summer retire and why won't Mother Winter retire?
9) How old is the Gatekeeper?
10) How did the White Council annex the New World shamans and what were the reaction of the Natives?

Eleyctra:

Is it significant that the eyes of Lea changed from gold in the earlier books, to green in Changes? Is Mab controlling Lea more than we think?

jeno:

1) How old were Eb and Maggie Sr when they first manifested a talent?
2) How many sisters does Thomas have?
[ Already answered. ]

Site Suggestions & Support / Searches Limited to 10 Results?
« on: September 07, 2011, 07:30:15 PM »
The subject of the thread pretty much says it all. Searches seem to return a maximum of 10 results. This isn't very effective when searching the WoJ section, because all of the WoJs are in there without being divided into sub-sections. It was fine when I could just set the poster's name to "jimbutcher" and run a search, then sift through all the results until I found what I was looking for, but now, if I don't get lucky, I'm pretty much not going to find things.

We've been told that Maggie LeFay was, "Brilliant, erratic, passionate, committed, idealistic, talented, charming, insulting, bold, incautious, arrogant-- and short-sighted, yes. Among a great many other qualities." We've also been told that she knew more of the Ways than any other wizard alive, and knew them well enough that she could predict where they would go and when they would change-- something which apparently even very few fae are capable of doing.

Maggie apparently hated the way that humans could be preyed upon by wizards and other supernatural types without it being considered a breach of the Laws of Magic. Like Harry, she probably had the reasons for this stance explained to her, and like Harry, she probably understood it, even if she hated the results of the argument. But suppose that, unlike Harry, Maggie did not decide to drop the subject, or give up on changing things.

Maggie apparently explored the Nevernever in far greater detail than most wizards, and she quite likely went places that few wizards ever go. Suppose that one day she went exploring in some backwater of the Nevernever, someplace no sane wizard would ever go on their own, and she came across a place where passage to the Outside was possible.

We don't really know what the Outer Gates are, except that they open onto the Outside. And we don't really know what the Outside is, except that it's not part of Earth's normal reality. Outside may be one of the far reaches of the Nevernever-- in which case, blocking off access to it seems like it would be next to impossible-- or maybe it's another plane of existence, sort of like the Earthly plane, but quite separate. The latter seems like it would be easier to block off, since it seems like there would be fewer routes between such a realm and Earth. In either case, we know that access to the Outside is rare enough that it can be blocked off, because that is what has happened.

The Outer Gates seem like they must be points either on Earth or in the Nevernever where someone can open a gate and enter the Outside. Even the name implies this: Outer/Outside + Gate/portal. There must be a finite number of them known to the White Council in order for them to be blocked off. But the Nevernever is a big place; it's the biggest place, according to Harry. If the Outer Gates exist there, then it's almost inevitable that there are Outer Gates which have never been found and documented by wizards of the White Council.

So, suppose Maggie LeFay went exploring and found one. She wouldn't step through, of course, because she'd be instantly annihilated by the substance of that plane. But, being who she was, she wouldn't really need to step through to make an excellent guess about what was on the other side. And now Maggie has access to the Outsiders, something no one ever achieves, because the Council is so strict about killing anyone who even looks like they might be curious in that direction.

Maggie goes back to some of her friends, and they sit around, have some drinks, and start talking about how they want to foment political change for the poor vanilla mortals. Maggie brings up her new discovery, and they start pooling their knowledge of Outsiders and what they're capable of. Maybe they go to the Gate Maggie's discovered, and begin experimenting with summoning Outsiders in an attempt to learn more about them. The group eventually reaches a point where they realize that Outsiders can possess people and grant a dramatic boost to the host's natural power. (I'm extrapolating here, based on what we saw of Vitto's amped-up White Court psychic attack. This may not be something that all Outsiders can do, but it may not be limited to a single Outsider, either. There could be a whole class of Outsiders like that, for all we know.)

I have no idea what the group could have learned from the Outsiders to make them think they would be useful in changing the world for the better, but I suspect that that's what happened. I think maybe Maggie had never given up on the idea of leveling the playing field between vanilla mortals and wizards, which would in turn level the field between mortals and most supernaturals. Only, maybe Maggie had given up on the idea of doing it using White Council politics. Maybe she had decided to start cooking up ways to replicate a wizard's abilities in the wider vanilla mortal population. And maybe, somehow, Outsiders seemed like they would be especially useful in doing this.

Way back in Storm Front, we had the Three-Eye drug, which turned out to be a potion that really did grant the Sight to vanilla mortals. Victor Sells supposedly created it, but he was an untrained hack. What are the odds that he could have developed something that no White Council wizard had ever heard of before? Or at least, something that was not common knowledge among wizards. I think Victor Sells probably got the recipe, or the beginnings of it, from someone else. Probably someone in Maggie's original group.

And then we have Kumori, in Dead Beat, talking about eliminating death forever through necromancy. Harry himself thinks that this would do more to level the playing field between vanilla mortals and wizards than practically anything else, making their lifespans equal to a wizard's for the first time in history. If she and Cowl were successful, then combining that with a safer version of the Three-Eye drug, that would eliminate the Sight and the longevity from the list of disparities between vanillas and wizards.

After that, there is the power of magic itself. I have only the vaguest suspicions about how this one might be solved, mostly involving Outsider possession of the entire race of vanilla mortals-- but, honestly, that idea seems way too crazy for anyone to actually want to implement. I doubt that Maggie would've been that far gone. I mean, there's a reason that Outsiders are a banned subject, and summoning roughly 6 billion Outsiders into the Earthly plane would surely seem like a bad idea to anyone with half a functioning brain cell. But, whatever Maggie planned, my guess is that it did involve Outsiders in some way. Not one-by-one possession, but something else. I just have no clue what that something else might be.

Anyway, Maggie gets her group together, which probably included Justin DuMorne, and maybe later Lord Raith, and they begin this grand plan to change the world for the better. I'd imagine Lord Raith's excuse for being part of things was that anything that helped humans stay alive was beneficial to his kind in the long run. If vanilla mortals were strong enough to survive regular feeding by Whampires, everyone would win, from his perspective. Or, at least, that's probably something like what he told Maggie. After all, Raiths feed through superhumanly awesome sex, so if everyone could do that without any ill effects, why not?

Maggie, being brilliant, probably had a better grasp on Outsider lore than most of the rest of them. When things eventually turned bad, which they obviously did, she knew enough to recognize it and formulate a plan to fix the problem she had created. I don't have much of an idea how they turned bad, except to guess that the Outsiders may not have been quite as easy to use without repercussions as the group had believed they would be. Maybe the Outsiders began to exert an unhealthy influence over the group, bending it toward a new, less pleasant direction.

So Maggie left, hooked up with Malcolm Dresden, and gave birth to an Outsiderbane, who was meant to correct all the problems his mother had caused.

I know this seems like a weird and twisted plan, but think again about how Maggie was described: brilliant, passionate, committed, idealistic, talented, bold, incautious, arrogant-- and short-sighted. Maggie could have come up with a plan like this. She could have found an unknown Outer Gate, she could have figured out how to summon Outsiders through it, and she could have decided they'd make a great tool to change the world for the better. And she could have been arrogant enough to think she could use them that way successfully. And maybe she was short-sighted enough not to realize that it would take a dark turn, at least not until the end.

PS: I wrote this post while listening to Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" on a continuous loop. So if it seems way more nuts than my usual posts, I blame them.

Over the years there's been an endless series of guesses about who fixed Little Chicago, but there usually hasn't been much to separate any one theory from the legion and assign more credibility to it than many of the others. The questions to be answered are: how would someone get into Harry's home to fix the model without leaving any trace of their passage; how would someone even know that Little Chicago existed, or how to repair it; and why would someone enter Harry's home without his knowledge, fix the model, and then leave without ever letting him know? I think I know the answer to the first two questions, though the third is still mostly a mystery.

In Changes, Lea told Harry this:

Quote from: Changes, Ch. 15
"Ensuring the well-being of my spiritual self," I murmured. Then I blinked. "The garden, the one on the other side of this place... It's yours."

"Indeed, child," she said. "Did you not think it strange that in your turmoil-strewn time here none of your foes-- not one-- ever sought to enter from the other side? Never sent a spirit given form directly into your bed, your shower, your refrigerator? Never poured a basket of asps into your closet so that they sought refuge in your shoes, your boots, the pockets of your clothing?" She shook her head. "Sweet, sweet child. Had you walked much farther, you would have seen the mound of bones of all the things that have attempted to reach you, and which I have destroyed."

"Yeah, well. I nearly wound up there myself."

"La," she said, smiling. "My guardians were created to attack any intruder-- including one that looked like you. We couldn't have some clever shapeshifter slipping by, now, could we?" She sighed. "You took a terrible toll on my primroses. Honestly, child, there are elements other than fire, you know. You really ought to diversify. Now I have two gaping maws to feed instead of one."

"I'll... be more careful next time," I said.

"I should appreciate such a thing." She studied me quietly. "It has been true for your entire lifetime, child. I have followed you in the spirit world. Created guardians and defenses 'pon the other side to ward your sleep, to stand sentinel over your home. And you still have only the beginnings of an idea of how many have tried." She smiled, showing her delicately pointed canine teeth again. "Tried, and failed."

Which also explained how she was always near at hand whenever I had entered the Nevernever. How she would be upon my trail in seconds whenever I went in.

Because she had been there, protecting me.

We don't know when Lea went into the ice at Arctis Tor, or when she came out, but we do know that she was there during the period of time between Harry's conversation with Mab in Dead Beat and the time he came to Arctis Tor in Proven Guilty. This means that for the nine months between those two events, it wasn't Lea who was watching over Harry, but Mab.

Lea's garden connected directly to Harry's lab. Mab, being Mab, seems like she would certainly be capable of looking through the veil between Earth and the Nevernever so that she could see what was on the other side, if she chose to. Mab already had an interest in Harry as her next Winter Knight, and Lea's responsibilities toward Harry would've given her an additional motive to keep an eye on him. She could have scried on Harry many times prior to Proven Guilty, watching him as he put together Little Chicago. And, being Mab, she could've seen what Bob did not: that Little Chicago was flawed, and if Harry used it before it was repaired, it would fry his little wizard brain.

So, one day, on the day PG begins, Harry gets a note from the Gatekeeper about black magic in Chicago, and he decides to try using Little Chicago for the first time. Mab learns of this in whatever way she learns things-- though in this case, the Gatekeeper may have sent her a note telling her about it-- and realizes that if something isn't done, her future Winter Knight is very shortly going to die of his own stupidity.

I don't know why Mab didn't simply step into Harry's lab while Bob was there, but from the clandestine way that LC was fixed, we can guess that she didn't want Bob to see her doing it. Or maybe she didn't want anyone to observe her fixing it; the brownies aren't allowed down there, so there may not have been any observers around at all. Or maybe, if she and Bob were in the same place at the same time, she would be compelled to take some action against him, and she didn't want to do that yet because he was so useful to Harry. Just a guess.

Anyway, whatever her reasons were, Mab apparently didn't want to fix Little Chicago with an audience watching her. So she needed to find another way to prevent Harry from using the model before it was corrected. And while we don't know for certain that Arctis Tor had already been sacked by this point, it's quite possible that it had been, so Mab may also have had motive to interfere with the Black Council's plans. Mab uses her vast knowledge and foresight to plot out likely events, and realizes that if she sends fetches to plague Molly's life, Molly may contact Harry in time to head him off from getting his brain fried.

Mab may also have sent the drive-by car rammer to slow Harry down on his way home at the beginning of PG. That's not really vital to this theory, but without that incident Harry probably would have made it home in time to use Little Chicago before Molly could contact him. So maybe that can be laid at Mab's feet, also.

Harry gets bumped off the road and side-tracked. Mab sends fetches to screw up boyfriend Nelson's life. Nelson is arrested. Molly calls Harry for help, interrupting him before he can use Little Chicago. Harry goes to see her and finds himself coincidentally already onto the case of black magic, without ever needing to use LC to track it down. He eventually goes back home and grabs Bob, which leaves the lab empty of observers. Mab takes this opportunity to pop over, fix Little Chicago, and leave.

And that's the end of the relevant parts of the theory. I don't know why Mab had the fetches grab Molly and take her to Arctis Tor. I suspect she was killing a few birds with one stone, though I can only guess what the birds might have been. A lot more speculation about that can be found in knnn's recent thread, over here.

Everything we needed to know in order to make this guess was actually in Proven Guilty, except for the vital information that Lea's demesne was across from Harry's laboratory. That gave Mab a simple means of crossing directly into his home, and her mandatory protection of him gave her a reason to be watching him. That, in turn, gave her plenty of opportunity to find out about Little Chicago.

If this theory has already been laid out like this by someone else, I truly apologize. It's not my intention to try to take credit for something that someone else may have gotten to first. The threads and posts theorizing about Little Chicago could probably fill a small library, and if it was posted here somewhere, I missed it.

Anyway-- this is what I think happened with Little Chicago. I think it makes more sense and is more believable than any of the other possibilities I've heard of, including the various time travel ideas. (I've never liked the time travel theories much. It always seemed too simple, while at the same time taking a major risk of paradox.)

We now join a discussion of FM's empty-headed doll head avatar, already in progress:

Oh dear God I'm going to have nightmares because of your avatar.

I had to Adblock it. Way too creepy.

Site Suggestions & Support / Something Funky with the Polls
« on: July 18, 2008, 09:11:25 PM »
Strange things seem to be afoot with the polling system. For instance, in the Who is Cowl? thread, there are 102 votes shown in the bar graphs, but only 100 "total voters" listed at the bottom of the poll.

I'm not mentioning this because I think it's a big deal or anything, I just wonder what the cause of the discrepancy is. I figure there are two possibilities: either the "total voters" number doesn't include Mod votes when they have some level of invisibility turned on, and two Mods were invisible when they voted(or two Mods are invisible now, and for some reason their votes become invisible when they do); or(more likely, I suppose) two people decided to remove their votes and vote differently, and somewhere in this process the "total voters" number was altered accurately, but the votes shown by the bar graphs were not.

Anyway, I was just curious about it.

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: A Thread Grouping/Ignoring Option
« on: March 07, 2008, 07:57:44 AM »
Would it be possible to allow us to ignore posts and threads by a given user, or, better yet, to group threads by a given user separately from the other threads in the "Show unread posts since last visit" list? Not that I have anyone specific in mind(*glares at samuraimjh*), but it does sometimes seem as if an option like that could come in handy.

I know it's technically possible to do it, of course, but it may require so much time and effort as to make it a practical impossibility. I only suggest it in case it could be worked into the forum code relatively easily.

Site Suggestions & Support / Suggestion: Settings for "Unread Posts" ?
« on: January 02, 2008, 05:59:48 PM »
Would it be possible to allow a user to set preferences for which unread posts they want to have added to the "Unread posts since last visit" list? I ask, because while I've read all of the Dresden books, I'm still working my way through the Codex Alera, and I've noticed several spoilery topic subjects in the Unread Posts list whenever I check it. I do my best to just ignore them, but things like "Isana's Marriage" and such still make an impression.

It might be helpful to posters who haven't read all of both series to be able to check off whether or not they want unread posts from both the Dresden section and the Codex Alera section, or even whether or not they want posts from the Spoilers sections of either forum to be added.

Thanks for your time and effort in running the board, Iago and mods.

Site Suggestions & Support / Possible editing error with the forum
« on: September 25, 2007, 06:19:55 AM »
I could be wrong about this, because I haven't been able to duplicate the bug-- mostly because I have no means of doing so-- but I think there may be an error with posting and editing at the same time in the same thread. As in, someone posts a message, then begins to edit the message, then someone else starts a reply, finishes the reply, and then the first person finishes editing.

I say this because just now, Sameth posted, then I replied, and a couple of minutes later, my reply was gone but Sameth's original post had been edited to add a lot of stuff after the original text. So, the above is what I'm guessing happened.

If I'm wrong and it was something else, I apologize. Maybe I just misremembered and never actually clicked "Post" at all. I don't think so, but it could be.

Thanks for the boards and the forum in general, btw... I love discussing the various mysteries of TDF books with people here. :)
