DFRPG / How to use Foci and Refinements with Sponsored Magic
« on: December 31, 2012, 10:31:48 AM »

I have a question about specialization and focus items with regard to Sponsored Magic. We have an upcoming character in our campaign who is literally a Daughter of Freyja.  The character will be using only Sponsored Magic from Freyja; she will not be taking Evocation or Thaumaturgy.

According to one source, Freya was the Norse Goddess of love, beauty, fertility, war, wealth, divination and magic.

Sponsored magic comes with four focus items.  I presume that they could be used for enchanted items as normal, as long as the items go along with the agenda of Freyja.

But if the focus items are used as a bonus for casting magic, how does this work?

1) Does the character make a focus with a bonus for "Freyja Magic"?

2) Would the bonus have to be specified as "Freyja Magic Power" or "Freyja Magic Control"?

3) Would the bonus have to be specified as "Offensive Freyja Power" or "Defensive Frejya Power" or "Offensive Freyja Control" or "Defensive Freyja Control"?

4) Or must it be even more specified, such as "Offensive  Freyja War Power" vs "Defensive Freyja Love Control" vs...  ?

Another question: Can such a character take Refinement as a Specialization?  If so, how specific must it be?

Thank you for any responses.

DFRPG / The interaction of potions with a Crafting Frequency bonus
« on: December 07, 2012, 07:23:01 AM »
I have a question about how enchanted items (or potions) interact with a Crafting Frequency specialization (or focus).

My wizard, through his Lore and a specialization and focus (lab equipment) has a total of an 8 strength in Crafting.  He has made the following "potion" (ie, one-use enchanted item):

Umbrella of Cloaking (Spirit based):  4 shifts vs perception of potential observers; covers a small group under the umbrella; duration of 3 exchanges.

Now, let us say that he purchaces Refinement and acquires an additional focus or specialization (does it matter which, aside from the need of the specialization pyramid?) for Crafting Frequency of 1.  Does this mean that he has the equivalent of two such umbrellas that each last 3 exchanges?  Or does he have one umbrella that lasts a total of 4 exchanges?  Is the answer different if this is built as a potion versus an enchanted item?

Thanks for any responses.

DFRPG / Pixie Minions and the rules
« on: July 18, 2011, 02:17:02 AM »
My character is from an old and rich wizard family which long ago made a Bargain to bind about a dozen pixies into service.

Occasionally, my character, the new head of the family, has found them useful for sending off to gather information or find items, very much like Harry Dresden uses Toot-Toot and the Za Guard.  When undertaking such tasks they are heavily bribed with donuts and pizza.  The GM often uses them as a plot device to dump information to the players.

My question is, what mechanic in the rules is best for handling this sort of thing?  Should the Pixies be included as part of an aspect to gain a +2 to a Contacts roll?  Or should my character use a Presence Roll to command them?  Or a Rapport Roll to bargain with them for specific tasks?

My character already has an aspect of "A loyal staff bound by blood, love, and bargains".  This is meant to apply to the Pixies, a Fae major domo, friends and close associates of the character's late father, and some friendly blood relatives that work for my character.  Should I have an aspect more specific to the Pixies if I am using them a lot?

DFRPG / What counts as a social skill for the Marked By Power bonus?
« on: February 07, 2011, 08:00:57 AM »
Marked By Power says that when dealing with someone in the magical community, all of your social skills operate at +1 bonus.  What counts?  Certainly Deceit, Empathy, Intimidation and Rapport count, which are listed under Social Conflicts on page 215.  What about Presence, which can provide extra boxes on the social stress track and which could be used to give commands?  What about Contacts and Performance?

Or is it the context and not the skill that matters? That is, if you are using Scholarship to out-geek someone regarding the fine points of marine biology, would that get you the bonus if you are talking to a mermaid changeling?

DFRPG / How many Wizards (or lesser magic-workers) in a city?
« on: January 18, 2011, 07:39:11 AM »
Are there any canon hints as to how many White Council Wizards are in a typical large city (or as a fraction of the total population)?  Also, on the average, how many lesser mortal magic-workers are there for each Wizard?  Our group is using Boston.

In the books, sometimes it seems that Harry Dresden is the only Wizard in Chicago.  At other times the landscape seem to get a bit crowded, where you couldn't heave a brick without hitting some kind of sorcerer.

I had the idea of a number of rival Wizard families in the city's history, but this might be too many. On the other hand, a family with a tradition of magic might better be able to find and train its magically inclinded members.
