DFRPG / Weird Character Combinations
« on: October 05, 2010, 07:17:21 PM »
What's the oddest group of characters you've ever seen in a DF game?

In the game I'm in, we have a con-man/gambler who has learnt thaumaturgy; a fake psychic whose "pretend powers" actually do exist; a dodgy dealer of a male sylph changeling from Morocco or Tunisia (who is confused because every other sylph seems to be female); and...   a Second World War naval captain who was lost in battle in the middle of the war and found himself on a beach in the 21st century, who has no powers but may be haunted by his crew.

Got anything weirder?

DFRPG / A Gambling Man
« on: September 13, 2010, 07:30:15 PM »
So, what's your way of making a character a gambler, card shark, whatever?

It looks like it definitely falls under the Deceit skill, but would you insist on the use of a stunt to add an extra trapping for it?  Or would a "+2 to Deceit when playing cards" stunt be enough?  Could that +2 cover just bluffing or cheating alone, or a combination of bluffing and cheating?  Maybe, +1 on each, from the one stunt? Or is that two separate stunts, one for each 'ability'?

I'm trying to work out a way to do it without going stunt-crazy.  I appreciate any suggestions y'all might have.

DFRPG / Petrifying Gaze And Similar Attacks
« on: June 05, 2010, 01:35:47 PM »
So, how best to model the "attacks" from creatures such as basilisks or gorgons?

My first thought was to use the Domination power as a basis.  Cost it at, say, -4 Refresh, the same as Domination+Master Dominator.  To initiate the attack the creature could pit Intimidation (or maybe Presence) against Discipline to place an aspect like "Locked Gazes" on the intended victim.  Every exchange after that the victim can attempt to break the gaze with the same roll, though I might give the attacker a +2 bonus on that - once locked, you stay locked!  Others could block their view, of course, or distract either party enough to stop the attack, but they've got to be careful about being attacked as well!

And in every exchange, the attacker rolls Discipline vs Discipline, causing mental stress with a +2 bonus (like Master Dominator).  Stress and/or consequences are taken as normal.  If/when the victim is Taken Out, they are turned to stone/frozen in a catatonic state/whatever.  If the Refresh was -4 I'd be tempted to give them +2 on the attack roll to balance the loss of the ability to create Renfields that Domination gives, or take it up to -6 anyway.

My second thought was to use The Sight as a basis; just give the attack an intensity and attack the victim's mental stress that way.  Not much different, though, and harder to cost.

Any thoughts?

DFRPG / Spell-Blocker Item of Power
« on: April 19, 2010, 06:31:04 PM »
I'm not convinced this is the best place for this, but...

What powers would be work best for an Item Of Power whose sole purpose is to block spells - any spell - without needing a spell-caster to use it?  And when I say "block" I mean "hold it between you and the incoming magic and the spell is blocked" - though not, I imagine, with absolute certainty of success.  To be honest, I'm not entirely certain such an item is possible in the setting...

DFRPG / Pitch The Setting
« on: October 13, 2008, 06:46:54 PM »
Cast your minds forward... you've got the RPG coming in the post, you've got some cracking ideas for stories, and you've got the best players you know in mind for playing it.

But none of them have read the books.

How would you pitch the setting of The Dresden Files to them?  Do it in three or four short-ish paragraphs, highlight why this game is different to those other urban magic RPGs, make it sound as dynamic and exciting as you know it can be.

(I'm trying to think up something like this my own self... and I'm interested in how other folks might do it)
