Author Craft / Looking for someone who can do Space techie art
« on: June 21, 2015, 08:11:39 AM »
Greetings good folk.
I'm hoping to put a novella up on Amazon.
(We'll see about that however.)
But it needs a cover - and it's beyond my art skills at the
moment.
Looking for someone who could do a deep space satellite set against
an asteroid field - no planet.
At the moment, I'm just looking - I'll be honest.
Thanks for any help.

Author Craft / Words and phrases we think are cool.
« on: October 07, 2014, 06:55:11 AM »
Wasn't exactly sure where to put this but it seemed right for here.
If someone thinks it belongs elsewhere - feel free to move it.

Here are a couple of phrases that I really like:
(Not so sure about the spelling on these, however.)

Memento Mori
Tabula Rasa

And, of course, our old favorite.
Deus ex Machina

Feel free to post your own favorite phrases or words.

Well, a new thread and a new set of gigs.

3 DECEMBER WRITING CONTESTS

WritersMarket.com lists hundreds of contests for writers of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, writing for children, and more. Here are three with December deadlines:

Ohioana Poetry Award is an annual award to recognize a poet who was born or lived in Ohio. Prize is $1,000. Deadline: December 31.

There's still a chance to beat the early bird deadline of November 15, or catch the extended deadline in December.

Author Craft / Quotes about writing
« on: October 03, 2012, 06:24:54 PM »
I love quotes.
Below are several from: Writers on Writing by Jon Winokur.
I love his books - all quotes on various subjects from Zen to Love and, of course,
his first - The Portable Curmudgeon.

One should never write down or up to people, but out of yourself.
Christopher Isherwood.

Get black on white.
Guy de Maupassant

Blot out, correct, insert, refine,
Enlarge, diminish, interline;
Be mindful, when invention fails,
To scratch your head, and bite your nails.

Jonathan Swift

ON BEGINNINGS

I always begin with a character, or characters, and then try to think up as much action
for them as possible.

John Irving

I know very dimly when I start what's going to happen.  I just have a very general idea, and then the
thing develops as I write.

Aldous Huxley

I always start writing with a clean piece of paper and a dirty mind.
Patrick Dennis

ON CHARACTERS

You can never know enough about your characters.
W. Somerset Maugham

Each writer is born with a repertory company in his head and...as you get older, you become more
skillful in casting them.

Gore Vidal

My characters exasperate me.
Anita Brookner

The characters have their own lives and their own logic, and you have
to act accordingly.

Isaac Bashevis Singer

ON THEIR COLLEAGUES

Bernard Shaw has no enemies but is intensely disliked by his friends.
Oscar Wilde

The more I think you over the more it comes home to me what an
unmitigated Middle Victorian ass you are!

H.Gl. Wells to George Bernard Shaw

Hammet took murder out of the parlor and put it in the alley where
it belongs.

Raymond Chandler

I was following in the exquisite footsteps of Miss Edna St.Vincent Millay,
unhappily in my own horrible sneakers.

Dorothy Parker

ON FAME

Fame is a bee
It has a song--
It has a sting--
Ah, too, it has a wing.

Emily Dickinson

ON FICTION

Why shouldn't truth be stranger than fiction?
Fiction, after all, has to make sense.

Mark Twain

Display Case / Weird - caught us in mid conversation.
« on: February 14, 2012, 09:04:17 AM »
Whoopsie - Weird just locked on us again.
Anyway to continue.
I am impressed.  That is way cool DocC.
And yes, I would think you do need to practice if you're not to singe important parts of your anatomy.

Author Craft / Cool pics that give you writing ideas.
« on: February 13, 2012, 07:01:16 PM »
I'm not sure if this exactly belongs here but since it's connected to writing this is where I'll put it.
I'm sure you've all run across pictures that have you going - "OH WOW - I bet they do this here" or "How on earth did they get there."
Anyway I thought I'd start a thread by posting a cool picture I ran across.  You can feel the sun, smell the salt, and hear the waves splashing and the creak of the stairs as you walk up.
I'm not sure how I'll use it - but there has to be some sort of story idea or idea to add to an existing story in there.
Feel free to post any cool evocative pictures you've run across.

Author Craft / Just a suggestion.
« on: November 06, 2011, 07:14:35 PM »
I come from an artistic background - I've had lettering, advertising, theater make-up, etc.
Anyway in both lettering and theater make-up my teachers suggested that we keep a file of photos or samples - a swipe file in lettering, a morgue in make-up - of styles of lettering and photos of faces and things we liked.
It occurred to me that it might be a good idea for writers to have a swipe or inspiration file of pictures of places or people they liked or were intrigued about.
It makes it easier when you go to describe a scene(of something that exists) or a type of person if you have something to base it off of.  I've been taking screen captures over on the '5 minute get-away site' on the Icanhascheezburger site.
Even if you don't start an inspirations file - the site has some lovely photos.
It's just a suggestion.  Good luck to the NaNoWritMo people.

Author Craft / "A Martian Wouldn't Say That!!"
« on: October 10, 2011, 07:51:04 PM »
A Martian Wouldn't Say That!! compiled by Leonard B. Stern and Diane L. Robison is a wonderful little book about memorable memo's that those in the TV and movie industry have gotten from the Censors and Network Executives.
It seriously makes you wonder how anything good ever gets on TV or stays there. ??? ???

The following are some excerpts from real memos sent to different TV shows.

Although Connie is a sociopath, make sure she's not without warmth.

I think you're making a mistake having so many French involved in the production
of Les Miserables.

TO L.S.
Unfortunately, we are forced to put your program on hiatus.  Is has elements of quality for
which we can't find an audience.

Is it possible to improve the caliber of writing without doing a disservice to the show's
popularity and excellent demographics?

Please change the dialogue on Page 14.  A Martian wouldn't say that.

Please do not sensationalize the dead gopher.

NOTES
How committed are you to this Oscar Wilde fellow?  If you want him to do the first draft, it's
all right with me.

We're concerned about the uniforms on Star Trek.  They look like the whole crew is wearing Dr. Dentons.

URGENT
I know this is short notice but the network wants to see the script for the pilot very badly and very quickly.
Is there any way you could write the script now and do the research later?

If you're intrigued or just wondering WTF - you can find the book on Amazon.  It's a hoot and a half.
A friend who teaches script writing at AFI uses it in her classes.

I'm trying to work on a story and I was looking for a new way to say good or evil inclined particularly around the non-magical.
Others have used - White path, right path, Black wizard, dark way, etc.
I was thinking possibly of using a flower or plant.  Such as the Lilyway or Lilypath for white magic and the Mandrakeway or path for
black magic.
I couldn't think of a specific flower that's associated with black magic but the plant Mandrake has a shady reputation.
Any ideas or suggestions?

Author Craft / Cool words
« on: May 05, 2011, 06:05:10 PM »
There are so many words in the English language that aren't
used much anymore - I thought it would be fun to have people put down fun and somewhat obscure words
that they like.

Lour - a dark and threatening sky or a weird looking sky.  Can also refer to the way a person looks at you.
Ferntickled - an old term for being freckled

(drats - gotta find my box of writing books.)

I'm not sure who I should address this to.  Perhaps Iago.  If I get it wrong - sorry.
I was wondering, would it be possible to have an area in the forum where people could list stuff that they wanted to trade or perhaps sell to other forum goers.  No trading/selling would go on in the forum - that would all be conducted by PM or off site.
And to keep the spamers out of it, I would think that you couldn't post unless you were at at least 500 or 1000 posts.
It would be limited to things like books, art work, costume stuff, and, I'm sure, the beaders would post stuff.
The forum also wouldn't or shouldn't be responsible if anything goes wrong.
It's just a thought.

Author Craft / Question on Trademark or Copywrite
« on: December 14, 2010, 05:05:12 PM »
Greetings All,
I'm trying to write a fantasy short story.
In it one character is wearing a T-shirt with the quote on it - "Who ya gonna call..."
I know that's from Ghostbusters.  Question is - is it a Trademark or a Copywrite?
And which little symbol do I use?  I'm assuming that I have to use one of them.

Author Craft / An ethics question.
« on: July 12, 2010, 07:45:15 AM »
I have a short story idea that's been fermenting in my brain.  (It may never see the light of day, but it's been rumbling around up there for awhile.)  It's about pets and ghosts - more than that I'm not going to go into.
Anyway, had a hazy idea for the start and the finish.  The middle is where I usually bog down.
I was over on the pet thread when someone posted about their dog and something that had happened to her.
The incident and even the name of the dog would be perfect for my story.  It cleared a lot of the haze away.
I posted to the owner/poster to please get in touch with me.  But it looks like they've left the forum completely.
Ethics question.  Can I use this incident as is, or would I, should I change some things, or should I use it at all without having talked to the original poster and gotten permission??
