DF Spoilers / Peace Talks - Illogical Svartalves?
« on: July 29, 2020, 09:48:10 AM »
I don't understand how the behavior of the Svartalves was in keeping with the Accords.

Dresden specifically said that many nations in the Accords would consider the way Thomas was restrained (beaten until he couldn't move) to be practically gentle.  But I thought the entire point of keeping Thomas imprisoned was to let the matter be settled by a 3rd party arbiter.  And the Svartalves had to know that by beating Thomas to that degree, the White Court Hunger within Thomas would kill him while trying to heal his body.  Didn't they?

So weren't the Svartalves - in effect - slowly murdering Thomas in such a way that he would have no chance of living long enough to see an Arbitration?  How is this any different than holding a human prisoner for 6 weeks with no food and then saying - ooops?  We didn't know a human would die with no food for 6 weeks?  No one would believe that... The Svartalves are too intelligent to make that mistake as an honest mistake.  Which makes their actions to me seem like deliberate murder against both the letter and spirit of the Accords (I know, only the letter matters).

How is what the Svartalves did not murder?

DF Spoilers / Peace Talks - potion plothole?
« on: July 29, 2020, 09:40:59 AM »
I loved how the "the ingredients aren't important" for the don't-notice-me potion.  Nice call-back to the earlier books where every ingredient was described in detail as well as the potion creation process.

But - when he was describing the effects of the potion - he specifically said that the group had to stay together closely while walking so that the area covered by the shared potion was minimized.  OK.  Makes sense.  Until a few pages later we have Murphy driving the car and she had a drink of the same potion as well!  This puts quite a lot of distance between the group inside the castle and Murphy outside the castle - all sharing the same power from the same potion.   Ummmm...   Explanations?

DF Books / Jim Butcher is the kind of author who would...

Jim Butcher is the kind of author who would pull the wings off of a Pixie Fairy and nail them to a wall (with iron nails).

I'm just not sure if he would make us watch while it happened or if Harry would simply come into the room and see the wings nailed to the wall, no Fairy to be seen (similar to another Apocalypse-related story of some fame...).

And he would do it because - "It's good drama!" while laughing with a maniacally evil laugh....

(Agree or disagree?)

Loved Peace Talks - but there are a few points while reading the book where I said "Wait, what?  That's not right.  That doesn't match up with established Dresden history."

In Peace Talks, Harry stresses the point that this is his first time physically visiting the castle (because he visited it as a spirit in Ghost Story).

Quote
"Technically, this wasn’t my first visit to Marcone’s little fortress, but it was the first time I’d done so physically. I’d been dead during the last visit, or mostly dead, or comatose and projecting my spirit there, or something."

But he DID visit the castle - physically - at the end of Skin Game (the last chapter).  He and Molly went there to "discuss" matters with Marcone and Queen Mab.

Quote
"The frown became a scowl. But he stepped aside and let me in. I said, “Thanks,” and headed for the conference room. I knew right where it was. I’d visited when I was a mostly dead ghost. Skaldi hurried to keep up with me. The fact that I already knew where I was going appeared to leave him a little unsettled.

Wizard."

SO - my question once again is - did Dresden forget?  (Because he is an unreliable narrator?)  Or did Butcher forget?  And the proof-reading Betas missed it too?

OR - is this some sort of history changing/universe changing discrepancy building into Mirror, Mirror?

Loved Peace Talks - but there are a few points while reading the book where I said "Wait, what?  That's not right.  That doesn't match up with established Dresden history."

Here's the first.   When the 4 wardens (count them 4) popped up in the road to stop and talk to Dresden - he tought:
Quote
"The last time I’d faced off with this many Wardens, they’d been there to arrest me, after the death of Justin DuMorne. I’d been sixteen. I remember how frightening those grim spartan figures had been."
And that's just not true!  In Turn Coat, on Demonreach, when Dresden issued a challenge to the Senior Council and 3 of them showed up (Listens-to-Winds, Ancient Mai, and EB) - they also brought with them 5 wardens.  Count them.  1. 2. 3. 4. 5.  And they were all battle-seasoned veterans - much older, more powerful, and scary than the 4 wardens stopping Dresden in the the street.

Of course - the major point here is - 5 is more than 4.   So - the last time Dresden faced off against "this many wardens" (4 or more) - was at Demonreach, in Turn Coat, not back in the early days.

SO - my question is - did Dresden forget?  (Because he is an unreliable narrator?)  Or did Butcher forget?  And the proof-reading Alphas missed it too?

OR - is this some sort of history changing/universe changing discrepancy building into Mirror, Mirror?
