DF Spoilers / California Crew
« on: September 09, 2021, 04:39:02 PM »
As we've learned Harry's super power really is the empowering of people around him.  I was rereading Blood Rites and thought about the crew that eventually went out to California to practice Feng Shui - Jake, Bobby, Inari, and maybe Bobby's kids.  I can't shake that the adults would make a great Scooby doo gang, and I can't help but think of the kids kinda growing up like the brothers in Supernatural because of it.  Wonder if we could see them reappear as normal human  supernatural fighters in the future.  It would be a hoot to see.  Wondering if the time between them going off and them coming back is enough for the the kids to be involved yet.

DF Spoilers / new soulfire though
« on: July 23, 2021, 01:31:18 AM »
It's been discussed before that using soulfire in the making of a magic object (like a wizards staff) is dangerous because then there is something out there that may actually work as a direct connection to you/your soul thaumaturgically.  But then on the flip side we hear that all the active einherjar are actually some form of necromancy combined with soulfire, which would seem to bear the same risk (if you're ballsy enough to try to make a thaumaturgical link with Odin).  So I've still been thinking about soulfire uses, and had one thought on a side effect.

1.  Wondered if it would work to imbue Harry's new home with soulfire as he reactivates the magic.  Bob once described it as using rebar in concrete to make the whole stronger than the sum of its parts.  It seems like buffing up your home defenses would be a great place to use it, and reasonably safe as well assuming the home defenses are significant enough.  I would love to see someone really lay siege to his castle sometime and see it just hold everything off thanks to soulfire being built in.

2.  Harry made the bear belt buckle that literally held magic/mana in it.  Wonder if he could make something similar to hold soulfire.  Probably would not be worth making considering the fear of losing it... but just wondering what could be done with it!

Then I had my side thought: Home is where the heart is.  Home is part of you, and the more it is really part of you, the more you are invested in it, the more of yourself you put into it, the stronger the threshold.  what if the threshold effect of homes is really a soulfire kind of effect?  Not everyone uses magic, but everyone has souls.  I wonder if homes of things without souls have thresholds?  That would ruin that idea, but I think it worth discussing.

DF Spoilers / The Huntsmen
« on: February 12, 2021, 01:26:19 PM »
I just realized a problem with Battle Ground - the Huntsmen, non mortal fomor, killed 95% of the people in the neighborhoods they went through.  This is after Mab told all of Chicago to essentially stay inside for safety.  What happened to their thresholds?  Seems like Jim just forgot about them.

DF Spoilers / genoshwa
« on: February 03, 2021, 11:14:34 PM »
So Listen warns Harry the Genoshwa (spelling may be wrong) is still around, despite Harry being sure he smashed him and trapped him in Hades.  As far as we know there is no way he could have gotten out of there.  He didn't escape with Nic.

So.... What if Nic is somehow hiding as the Genoshwa?

Oh, and while on the topic, the Genoshwa is essentially Grendel.  Interesting then that the Grendelkin that Harry and Gard fought seemed so different.  I mean he needed mead and a virgin to procreate.  Somehow I doubt Listen has that problem...

DF Spoilers / The Accords, the Council, and Harry
« on: November 23, 2020, 05:16:07 PM »
Harry is no longer on the White Council, which is a member of the Accords.  They have cast him out.  They seem to be arguing that they can still come at him for breaking the laws even if he isn't a member, which is weird, but they do it to practitioners too weak to join the council so there is precedent.

But what if Harry were to join the accords like Marcone did?  Then he would be protected from the Council by the accords, and they can't really claim he's part of their group anymore.

So he would need three signatures that would be willing to irk the council.  I assume he can get winters.  Probably also Bigfoot's if his people actually join the council like he seemed to be proposing.  Ivy?  Think he could get Fix to sign for summer if Bigfoot doesn't join?  If he's looking at starting an organization and people are going to start to move against him anyways... it seems like being a signatory of the accords might be useful.  Maybe make Goodman a permanent retainer, hire the hellhound if he can afford it, get a permanent detachment of winter goons to control, that kind of thing.  I wonder if Bigfoot would be willing to take on young human apprentices recruited from the paranet that would fall under Harry's organization rather than the council...

DF Spoilers / Demonreach prisoner loot
« on: September 09, 2020, 12:01:23 AM »
What happens to stuff worn by beings locked into demonreach?  Left where they were grabbed?  Imprisoned with the being?  Put in the demonreach armory?

Just wondering where the titanic armor winds up....

DF Spoilers / Unidentified Winter Knight Abilities
« on: December 20, 2019, 10:36:16 PM »
We all know that becoming the winter knight has:
1.  Increased Harry's physical strength and speed, including probably increased reflexes.  Butters posits that this isn't necessarily magical (just the removal of normal limitors)
2.  Additional magical juice.  Not sure if Harry can actually pull much more of normal magic, but he seems to be able to pull cold magic more easily in addition to his normal magic
3.  Increased healing.  Not sure if this is true, but Harry seems to believe that the winter mantle helps with healing
4.  Innate balance on ice, ability to work with/break ice, and apparently a resistance to cold

We've seen indications it can do additional things like
A.  When attacking an actual outsider, Harry experienced a innate winter response of coating his hands with ice-blades that helped hurt the outsider.  This seems to indicate that winter magic might be institutionally inclined to be more effective against outsiders.

And other things seem possible
B.  We've seen that Toot appears to be able to at least speak any language.  Might Harry be able to tap into that cool ability?
C.  Additional synergies if he ever uses the Blackstaff considering its possible winter origins.
D.  It sounds like most knights die by violence.  Might it make him as longer lived or otherwise slow aging compared even to most wizards?

Any others?

DF Spoilers / Bob, Harry and the secret of Bonnie
« on: April 19, 2019, 02:25:44 AM »
At the end of White Night we learn that Bob can literally see Harry's soul.  He can see that Harry lost some soul to Lash, and received some energy back from Murph in a hug or something.  And we're supposed to believe that he couldn't see a spiritual entity growing inside Harry for years?  That seems.... unlikely.  So why did he never tell Harry about the spirit creature that could kill Harry if not dealt with properly?

I believe that it has to do with the future time travel.  I think when future spirit-Harry comes back in time, he will have a talk to Bob and order him to never tell his self about the creature.  But here's my question, do you think Bob will be able to talk about it now that Bonnie is out?  If so, that might give away that he was ordered, which would give away time travel Harry, so I doubt that he will bring it up.  (probably told to not do anything to give away time-travel Harry's actions)  But how good is he at bluffing?

I suspect the knights might sit this book out, so since Butters still has Bob, we might not see him this book, but its an interesting thought.  I think there is no way at all that Bob doesn't know about Bonnie.

DF Spoilers / walkingstick/black staff/winter knight
« on: January 22, 2019, 03:54:40 PM »
By now I know it is old stuff to think mother winter's walking stick = the blackstaff.  But I was thinking there might be an additional ramification to that idea.

We believe the blackstaff removes the taint of black magic from mortal casters who use it when casting black magic, protecting the caster from going nuts.  But that is what it does for most wizards.  If it truly belongs to Mother Winter, than I started wondering about how it might interact with the winter mantle if the wizard carrying it were the winter knight.  Just thinking that might unlock a nice synergy to develop additional (unanticipated by most wizards) power for Harry in the future if he ever acquires the staff.

Then I started wondering what kind of debt mother winter might incur if he were to bring it back to her, or whether it would be his duty to return it as the winter knight.

DF Spoilers / Skingame - why was Nicodemus hurtable?
« on: November 16, 2018, 09:02:57 PM »
Why was Harry able to hurt Nicodemus in Skingame?  He hit him a few times and for quite some time afterward we see Nicodemus favoring his side, having a hitch in his movement because of the blows from Harry, etc.  All the way into the scene where he locks Harry into the bank behind him he is still injured.

But Nicodemus is still wearing the noose and we've seen him recover from bullet wounds in front of our eyes (and apparently not be bothered by them as they occur, as he can roll his eyes and make a "get on with it" gesture while being shot!) so why did Harry's blows bother him so much?

I can't think of any reason and it seems like a real inconsistency.

DF Spoilers / Rashid, demonreach, what the heck?
« on: November 13, 2017, 07:33:36 PM »
When Rashid learns Harry is bound to Demonreach in Turn Coat he then offers Harry two pieces of advice 1. don't touch the power from the well, and 2. someone must die as the guilty party.  Why the heck doesn't he say, "Oh, and point 3, if you tell demonreach to capture just about anyone or anything on this island, it will--- easily.  Wouldn't that have lead to the capture at the very least the naagloshii and possibly a black council member?

I mean, Rashid knows a lot about the island, he knows Harry is going to have to learn more about it eventually.  Why not when it might have been useful?  I mean, if Harry had had just that one piece of knowledge that entire book would have ended very differently...

Calendar Event Discussion / Publication Schedule?
« on: June 26, 2013, 02:35:21 PM »
Is there a publication date for the new cinder spires book?  Is the publication of the next Dresden Files book dependent on the publication of the steampunk novel?  (i.e. will he not really start Dresden until he finishes his steampunk book?  or, might he set that project aside if it takes too long to craft another piece of exquisite dresden art?)  Is there any information on either that I have missed?
